Petta (2019)
"Classy"fied Baasha
People talk about Getting Rajinified. For me, Petta is a "classy"-fied Baasha. It has every ingredient that made Rajinikanth as an entertainer we all loved over the years. The revenge plot (that fodders Rajinism) is built over a realistic, socially relevant theme (yet without getting too preachy into it). Except for the flash-back portion, the pace of the movie was like a tracer bullet. Not sure if other fans would like this movie, but this is a "sweet" treat for Rajini fans indeed.
Kaala (2018)
Will become an evergreen classic
I've always yearned to see Rajinikanth in a wonderful role like this, and He lived Kaala on the screen like a King. Thanks to Pa. Ranjith's film-making for making this happen. Despite being a strong ideologue, Ranjith gave 'shades of grey' to every character and its ideology (including the Villain's which is diametrically opposite to Ranjith's). That gave space for a gem-actor like Nana Patekar to flourish as a strong antagonist to Rajinikanth (something that was missing in recent times). The family of Kaala was etched with moments that were so close and relatable to real-life. Eswari Rao (Selvi, Wife of Kaala) deserves a special mention for bringing comic relief (in this high-octane action drama) through the innocence of her character. Infact the women characters in this movie are truly an highlight.
The best part of the movie was it's climax. Ranjith's finesse to elucidate "Raavanakaaviyam"(that glorifies Raavan) using a narrative from Ramayanam itself is truly mind-blowing. This movie is a blockbuster material for all class of audience. Sadly the timing of its release coincides when the animosity towards Rajinikanth is at its peak. But this film will stand the test of time, and stay as an evergreen classic for the generations to come.
Kaatru Veliyidai (2017)
Unlike poles attract each other
A Maniratnam film always has a "solid" base for human relationships and this film isn't different in that aspect. Where it differs is the story narration - that is less verbose, more visual(and cryptic). The Characters (VC & Dr.Leela) seems to be well thought- out (but defined more through visual cues & motifs). The director has focused more on reflecting the "moments"(What happens) - of their love, togetherness and conflicts than elaborating their story(and the Whys).. These moments give a trajectory that's sinusoidal. The final culmination (climax) might seem out-of-place for many, but for me that an organic end (where the characters seem to resolve their conflicts within and with the other, and end-up together,at least that moment).. This movie is definitely a visual treat and will stand-out as a classic(though it doesn't appear so today)
P.S: If Karthi's(VC) acting has irritated you, then the character has achieved its purpose(the same goes with you ending up adoring Dr.Leela -Aditi).How these opposites connect is a phenomenon(you call it love or whatever) that's mystical, not logical.. And the movie just reflects that.
Kabali (2016)

The story is a compass centred on only one character - Kabaleeswaran(Kabali) - and its 'perspective' is about how kabali deals/resolves conflicts within himself/outside him.. Other 'characters' in the story either move in,out or disappear only in 'relation' to life-events of kabali, which is very well 'justified' in this 'perspective of narration' (and i've a counter-point for critic Baradwaj Rangan who said other characters were wasted)..
The movie is a simple human drama but what differentiates it is Pa Ranjith's film-making ..Though his screen-play elements were 'cliche'(not totally new) yet he was really 'successful' in holding the 'tension' at various points(specially the critical ones).. I felt cinematography and editing was 'highly consistent' with Ranjith's narration's 'perspective' and Santosh Narayanan's background-score really gave the 'feel' this movie needed..
Saving the best for the last - Rajinikanth's performance is a stellar experience.. I've and i'm a fan of the 'entertainer' Rajini, but the 'stylish performer' (revealed in this movie) was even more intriguing/entertaining.. I don't have the courage to be audacious enough to compare this to The Godfather but yes you might like it, if you're a fan of the same genre..
P.S: To those who dislike/feel unsatisfied with this movie... you've every right to be so.. but if you call this movie as a "disaster/crap/XXX" , i humbly say - "This is not for you... Magizchi" :D
Bãhubali: The Beginning (2015)
Baahubali- A movie with strong arms
A Simple story with a decent screenplay can give a highly grandeur experience due to fantastic execution- That's "Baahubali" for you. The hard-work of SS Rajamouli and his team of actors and technicians has literally translated into every frame. Though the story may appear "cliche" yet the charactization is the "best" among any recent telugu movie stories over this decade (Specially the women characters). I am sure this will be a trendsetter for Telugu cinema and should inspire/create a market for more "experimentational" yet commercially viable films.
I agree each of us will have a different opinion about the movie. One may not like something but one need not insult the hardwork of this team by using "off-the-necessary" words while writing critical opinions..I don't know if this matches Hollywood standards,but by Indian standards this is "Definitely HIGH" !!
Uttama Villain (2015)
An Unadulterated Cinema Experience
I have always been a big fan of KamalHaasan's writing more than his acting..And This movie proved a point yet again..The interest was clearly setup for me with Ghibran's terrific Background score and organic introduction of the protagonist(Manoranjan)..The story moves into a different dimension as it gradually progresses..Every character had an organic scope and beneath the story likes a "vision" that is kaleidoscopic. They are surely real time reflections of What Kamalhaasan is/was,What he has seen around him,his likes/dislikes of what happens around him is presented in a meta-est format.. If you can get "really" what the intro song duet conveys,you'll surely get to view more colors in the kaleidoscope..There is no justification/preaching but sheer presentation of reality less dramatically from the first shot till climax..I'm not a expert to judge technicalities but all i can say as a viewer is it was a "refreshing" cinematic experience that can never be got in anyone else's film except-"Kamal Haasan"
