Just too much going on
Gave this 5/10 because I managed to watch the whole series. It was watchable and had so much promise and potential but seems they were trying way too hard to make this series have everything. So much going on towards the end with different subplots I just got exhausted a bored and wanted it to wrap up already by episode 5.
They seemed to really make an effort at trying to flesh out the unlikeable characters and give them a backstory but I still just couldn't care less what happened to them. Will Forte is the only likeable character and even he was not given enough good writing to be really funny and great as we've seen him in other things.
So yes, it was watchable and entertaining enough but in trying to be a bit of everything, the quality suffers. Not really a great mystery (figured it out pretty quickly) and not really funny. The side plots were ridiculous. And maybe I'm a cold hearted person (could be lol), but the tearjerker/heartwarming backstories did nothing for me. Good to watch if you want to fill some time though and don't want to feel you missed anything if you fall asleep.

Sleeping pill in movie format
I love Nordic Noir and can appreciate a slower paced movie but ffs this should have been edited down to 90min! I can appreciate what the director was trying to do but I tried to watch this twice, the first time my husband fell asleep and I couldn't handle the strobe light scenes (way too long for anyone sensitive to light!). We forgot we'd tried to watch it and ended up watching again. The second time I really gave it a chance and we managed to finish the movie even though we both nodded out a couple times in the process. I don't usually fall asleep easily during movies. If you have insomnia this movie will cure it!

Beautiful filmmaking but lacks insight
I felt compelled to write a review as a longtime admirer of Mads Mikkelsen and Vinterberg as well as having strong opinions about alcohol. Vinterberg makes beautiful movies and Mads is compelling to watch, as always. The movie starts out so promising, we're drawn into the world of these characters who feel they're missing something in life and turn to alcohol as a solution. But as the movie progresses, the story doesn't. I was waiting for it to go somewhere and maybe show that one can find that relaxation and joy within themselves and not need alcohol. Instead it takes a predictable turn without further insight into the conflict within each character. To me it seems they attempted to make a movie about alcohol culture without any insight. Considering the amount of suffering and deaths alcohol causes, it ends up feeling hollow like the message is: "hey, alcohol can be bad so don't drink too much but look how fun it is to party!"
