The Swarm (2023)
Don't believe the book community
I don't get all the bad reviews at all. We binged the show in two sessions and we really liked it!
We didn't read the novel, maybe that's why we didn't have any prejudices. It was very entertaining, the acting was okay and in some parts even very good.
Due to a smaller budget, of course, there are no huge Roland Emmerich destruction scenes, but you still get the consequences of the whole threat. What you also get is that science and data is important! And that we need to take care more of our planet and the oceans. Me, being a scientist myself, really liked the three different story lines shown and how science is done in different ways and how it is important to communicate with each other. I was also relieved, that there is no typical political or commercial antagonist trope, that "just won't listen to scientists". It was a refreshing approach to see what happens, when you listen to science in a crisis like this.
Edit: I just red the synopsis of the book and was so happy with the changes they made! Not again the US as the supreme driver. Not again crazy religious military fanatic. The writers made the right choices to alter exactly these points. Thank you!
The Silent Sea (2021)
Unexpectedly good
I am a big fan of Sci-Fi horror. It's basically my favourite genre. So when I stumbled over this small gem I was intrigued..and not disappointed at all. Good shows and movies on this genre are rare. Movies like Event Horizon, Sunshine oder Life are expensive, but worth the cost. Getting a mini series felt so satisfying!
Yes, sometimes it's about silly. And yes, sometimes they make weird decisions. But the characters are well written. You feel something (good or bad) when someone dies, which is a good sign. The acting was solid.
The premise of the show is like this one Doctor Who episode (Waters of Mars), but takes it more seriously. I found it super interesting and was into it from minute one.
I don't get why people nowadays hate and downrate every new original stuff and new attempts to this genre. Give it a try and ignore the few "unscientific" facts and you will have a well-bingable show :)
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Alloyed (2022)
Great finale for a great season of a great show
For a long time Tolkien fan I enjoyed this season very very much. The finale was the cherry on top of that great first part of that show. I was so sad to read that it may only return in 2024.
For a someone who knows the lore of all of Tolkiens work there were no big surprises here, but I still loved all the revealing moments in that episode. They were just done so damn well. I had tears on my eyes, when Gandald realized who he really is and the way he talked about adventure and to follow your nose when in doubt. It was pure LOTR feeling. And when the first three rings were forged I had goose bumps. Maybe it's the nostalgia and the fan serve, but it just works!
Unfortunately haters gonna hate and I'm so sad that the show gets downrated by so many people just because. But that's the internet nowadays. Full of trolls and haters.
Don't let them influence you. If you like Tolkiens work and the Jackson movies, you're gonna love this show and especially this episode.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Great show, except for all the haters
I am an old school LOTR fan. Saw the movies several times in the cinema and on DVD. Red all the Tolkien books I could get. I just love all about it.
So I was curious and skeptical at the same time, when I started RoP. And what can I say after finishing season 1? I can't wait to see more! In my eyes the show is nearly perfect. It catches a lot of Tolkiens spirit, which is the most important thing for me. Yes, sometimes it can be a bit long, but so we're Tolkiens books. I actually like a slow pacing, watching the landscapes, see characters interact, listen to the music. I don't care if an elve is black or dwarve women don't have beards..
All actors do a great job, my favourites being Elendil, Elrond and Durin Jr. I also don't get the critic against the boring dialogues or the "poorly" written story.
In my opinion they found a good middle ground between the original material and the problem to fit a several centuries lasting story in a five season show. It's great for people unfamiliar with the books or for people who just liked the Jackson movies or for people like me, who know all of the lore. There are so many small nods that you appreciate.
Visually everything looks stunning. This show was made for the movie theatres and I would have loved to watch it there.
I always get the feeling, that people are just looking for flaws in this show, just to be anti-something, like it becomes more and more normal nowadays. Nothing is perfect and if something is great and people love it others have to hate it just because.. haters gonna hate.
I hope Amazon won't pull money from the show, because of all the haters. All friends and critics I know really enjoy the show.
