Tunes of Glory (1960)
Tempest in a teapot
Great acting in a movie where immature grown men, playing soldier (in skirts), create tempests in teapots.
Blume in Love (1973)
Blume in Venice
I haven't been able to read anything about this movie that comments about the handsome young man played by Ian Linhart who is seen several times in the Venice scenes. He looks like the young actor, only a few years older, who played the boy Tadzio in 1971 in Visconti's "Death in Venice" who becomes the obsession of an older man. Ian Linhart 's only other role was in Visconti's "Ludwig " in 1973-- the same year as "Blume". He's obviously in this movie for a reason but I can't see the significance
Neither Wolf Nor Dog (2016)
Spoiler alert
This is basically the story of bitter, self righteous native Americans on the reservation who summon a well meaning white writer to the Res so they can vent their anger against white people on him. One of them greets him thusly: "Hey Nerburn, get your ass over here." He understandably wants to leave, but a "wise old man" and his accomplice disable his vehicle so they can take him on a journey during which they inform him (and us) of the injustices inflicted on them personally and their people historically by the "white man." They don't tell us anything we aren't already aware of and it is sad, but their bitterness gets old very quickly. I feel bad for them, but I think the best thing for them would be to stop whining, and get over it. A well meaning film, but so much bitterness and self righteous, self defeating negativity wears thin
Bonanza: The Lila Conrad Story (1964)
Sadie Thompson in the old west
Spoiler alert. This story is basically a reworking of W. Somerset' Maugham's famous story "Rain" (also known as "Miss Thompson") moved to the old west with bad guys and good guys thrown in. It's the age old story of a self righteous married man trying to reform a "fallen woman" all the while unaware that his unconscious love and lust for her will bring his downfall. In this story, the reformer is a judge instead of a missionary although he still sounds religious asking her to confess so she can be redeemed. It's an interesting version of this story and done very well.. I think the beautiful Patricia Blair does a wonderful job as a Sadie Thompson type of character and Cathy O'Donnell as the beleaguered wife is great as always
