Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Oh my God
I won't say that this movie took me on a wild ride because that would be the pinnacle of uninventive writing, but well, OK - it did! Being familiar with the old Mad Max installments, I had trouble imagining where a new one could go. But of course, like everybody else, I got excited by the teasers as well as all the hype that started building around the release. And - to quote my summary line: Oh my God! Isn't it amazing how much fun can still be had with a movie that isn't much more than trucks chasing each other (and, here and there, explode in a big ball of fire)?! It goes to show that a dreamlike quality - in this case a nightmarish one - can go a long way compared to so many movies nowadays that are too talky or that are just too much like literature or even more often like the comic strips they were made of. This is a movie that doesn't tell us anything - it's a movie that is mainly just showing us stuff! And what great stuff it is!
UFO: It Is Here (2016)
much better than expected!
I read a lot of reviews about UFO - It is here and had mixed feelings about watching it. But now that I have seen it, I'm pretty glad I did. Okay, the movie has it's flaws: Yes, you can see that The Blair Witch Project was a huge influence. Yes, there is a some shaky cam stuff going on. And yes, you're probably not going to like all the characters all the time. But I also think there were some pretty cool things going on. For example: 1. The title sequence was very nice, and reminded me of ALIEN 2. The actors did a good job! 3. The special effects were nicely made and pretty gory, but there also weren't too much of them 4. It was a relief that they never showed the whole alien - too many movies have been ruined for me because the "monster" looked shitty. It gets one extra point, because this was one of the few German films I wanted to keep watching.
It Follows (2014)
awesome!
This movie definitely didn't get enough attention! After watching it I was so scared, I was just lying in bed with my eyes wide open. I just couldn't sleep. The IT is such a good horror movie "monster", I felt very uneasy for the majority of the time. The characters are interesting and not annoying (like so many others are nowadays) which was such a relief. I've never seen Maika Monroe in anything else before, but she did a good job! I should also mention the soundtrack which was clearly inspired by the 80's and matches the colors and images of the movie pretty good. This makes it not only scary, but beautiful to look at, too. "It Follows" makes you believe in modern horror movies again :)
