Yves Saint Laurent (2014)
Kickass Cinematography
Jalil Lespert effortlessly brings 50 and 60's Parisian Society to life through his adaptation of Yves Saint-Laurent but more importantly provides candid and as authentic as possible biographical content detailing the trials and tribulations Saint-Laurent endured as a young man trying to find his way in two separate dichotomies: the world and fashion world.
Yves Saint-Laurent, as iconic as we now recognize him from a consumer perspective, was very much human and fell victim to the exact perils of life that trivialize our human experience universally.
He was unequivocally an artist: one with creativity that tinkered the fine line between genius and insanity in his every interaction both personally and professionally. The film brings this reality to life and introduces viewers to the icon as early as age 21 before the fame, glamor, and romanticized images of him prevalent today.
I was rendered speechless by numerous scenes where his life and relationship were illustrated intimately as it was a bit realer than anything I've ever viewed before in a film environment. Nevertheless, it tremendously enhanced the production value and gave me a deeper appreciation of the production and cast ensemble.
I genuinely appreciate how the film portrayed his discontentment with his life in pursuit of being recognized for his talent during his tenure with Dior and beyond.
It gives perspective to anyone trying to find their way or niche in life because the story illustrates the grim reality that the road to success is often rocky and under massive construction and also supports the notion that those who persevere inevitably forge ahead to succeed.
If it weren't for his hardships and lacks thereof both personally and professionally we potentially would not know of the brand internationally revered and respected as the iconic Yves Saint-Laurent.
I urge anyone interested in a glimpse of his earlier years to view the film and anyone with curiosity about his plight as a designer.
Beyond the Lights (2014)
Perfect for Today's Millennials
I attended the film premiere in Hollywood and must say it exceeded my expectations.
I believe many people are looking for a reenactment of Love and Basketball with this offering and are in for a well-deserved awakening if this is their limited way of thinking. Love and Basketball is available for viewing and purchase worldwide and should not be brought to life again or camouflaged as a new film title.
Beyond the Lights caters to the core demographic whose interest is piqued by lifestyle and celebrity persona. I think its commendable the producer Gina was removed from industry for 14+ years yet still has a command for providing films that cater to her core demographic audience which evolved and transitioned tremendously since her last film contribution.
The chemistry between the main actors is explosive and effortlessly portrayed. While the storyline and progression is believable and engaging considering the subject matter and my own experiences working in the field of music.
There was a scene I found cheesy but looked around and noticed others crying and applauding at the exact same moment. So, the film arouses many emotions and only great writing and acting usually evoke this type of crowd interaction.
The overwhelming theme is one about love and the sacrifices individuals make if they are earnest and honest in pursuit of it. It secondarily touches on themes that deserve attention in a larger context such as suicide, the pressure of fame, and more.
I would highly recommend this film to young adults and mature audiences alike as it lastly touches on themes regarding generational differences and divides.
The Toy Soldiers (2014)
A Perfect Compliment to the 80's w Dynamic Characterization
The Toy Soldiers is an incredible film that progressively builds in a nearly effortless way. From start to finish, the cast delivers epic performances leading to the ultimate crescendo: an ending like no other.
The film is precise in resonating with the true essence of the time period and authentically portrays pervasive themes of the 1980's while illustrating the ties that bind individuals, families, and friends.
This was my first introduction to several cast members but their performances and portrayals were outstanding nonetheless. I experienced MANY emotions during the viewing, which I consider a great feat for the ensemble because great films are known to make one cry and laugh all at the same time. In this specific case, I did both.
