Freelance (2023)
Silly flawed but fun
Look you will know if this show is for you or not. It is obvious it had some issues with re shoots and directing and was relatively low budget. Some acting was good and some pretty terrible. Some lines are great and some rubbish but overall I quite enjoyed it. Cena is a complete hunk and Alison Brie is absolutely gorgeous. Friday night fare when you have had a couple of drinks some good food and you haven't decided this is the big movie for the night but might be a bit of grub later then this is absolutely fine. It reminded me of watching some quite rubbish films on vhs in the 80s but I didn't actually mind !
The Lincoln Lawyer (2022)
A great legal show but could be even better
I am now into the second season of this show and I am still a bit unsure about it. The storylines and twists are very good but that is because it has Michael Connolley's fingerprints on it! I think if you like Bosch TV series you will like this. I don't think it is quite as bingeworthy as Bosch. My issue is with the direction of the main actor. It is pretty clear he got the role as a result of some auditions recreating court room scenes and chats with defendants. I say this because he is absolutely brilliant in these scenes. The way he charms the judge/jury the audience etc and his interactions with defendants etc are perfectly executed. The issue is outside the courtroom or in his family relationships. He is just not quite right. It might be they have different script writers for these scenes or he is directed too much like his court scenes which are high emotion, putting on a performance. If you want to see an example of how tone changes in the court room look no further than "A time to Kill" with Matthew McConaughy. The other actors in it are great and Cisco character is a great story line about trying to break from your past. I would of given it a top rating but just feel it is achingly close to being one of the best shows on TV and that somehow annoys me!
How to Become a Cult Leader (2023)
Interesting but missing something
I have been interested in cults and brainwashing for a while. Good show but agree that it missed out one of the most famous cults - the Branch Davidians. Probably because Netflix has a dedicated show about Waco which is excellent. I think it should have also focussed more on how people managed to get sucked in by these charlatans. I think the animations work really well too. The episode on the Moonies was interesting also. It would be interesting if the looked at why so many cults originate in the USA and Japan. I believe this may be due to the prevalence of spirituality and religion in these countries.
