Anon (2018)
Looks great. Clive Owen is very good. But sadly it is a snooze
20 years ago this would have been a pretty remarkable movie. But the bar has risen quite a lot in the meantime. Now we can watch episodes of Black Mirror that absolutely blow us away and in less than an hour. So when a movie like this comes along at almost twice the length and with half the story, it is simply a bore. Too bad that the great visual look and Clive Owen were wasted on this bore. I was checking my email about 45 minutes in, and flat out surfing the web soon thereafter. Do yourself a big favor and see the director's sci fi movie from 20 years ago (Gattaca) or Clive Owen's own sci fi masterpiece Children of Men.
The Polka King (2017)
It's really an 8 but 2 extra stars .......
2 extra stars since so few other movies out there right now seem to think they need a plot, characters you care about, and try to keep it under an hour and a half. This movie has all of that.
It's warm, sweet, it moves right along, it stays engaging, and there's polka music!
BTW if you enjoyed this movie you will also like Bernie which also stars Jack Black, is also a biopic, and also has a plot with characters you care about.
Magellan (2017)
I wish there were spoilers to give you
Maybe if this were a half hour Twilight Zone episode then we could excuse the lack of an ending. This movie literally ends just as it is about to get interesting. None of the plot lines were resolved. After an hour and 45 minutes, that is inexcusable. I am not putting this movie down for having a low budget. I just wish they had resolved a few things by the end.
Downsizing (2017)
Could use about 45 minutes less of itself
Some very interesting ideas but it took waaaaay too long to present them. Someone thought they were making an epic but then part-way through they decided to make a satire, and then in the end wanted it to be a feel-good movie. Also they needed to cast someone about 10 or 20 years younger than Matt Damon to play the young man searching for his sense of worth and a way to express his wanderlust.
Doctor Who: Mummy on the Orient Express (2014)
Homage to Agatha Christie as only The Doctor can do it
Combine Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None with Murder on the Orient Express and invite the Doctor to join in. This is a great stand-alone episode with thrills of the best of the classic serials.
What I liked best about this episode was the collection of characters. The captain, the professor, the engineer, Maisie ... each was interesting and you felt like they were really a part of the story. Just like in the classic Doctor Who with it's longer stories and wonderful supporting characters.
I would rate this episode as a flat-out 10 if it weren't for the bits with Clara having a moral dilemma about the Doctor's methods. That could be an interesting topic but here it is not only distracting, but it takes away from time that would have made this a perfect episode. Instead of the rushed "sorry, you missed me saving everyone" ending we could have seen how the Doctor actually beat Gus and saved everyone.
But don't let that stop you from watching and enjoying this episode. It's nearly classic Doctor Who!
Sandy Wexler (2017)
It's OK but it's way too long
I've seen some Adam Sandler movies that I really liked (Click, and the one with Harvey Keitel as the devil). I've seen Woody Allen's Broadway Danny Rose (it's excellent) which this movie is very similar to. There are some funny bits (I laughed a few times), there's some decent characterization going on, but wow does this drag on for too long. Any average movie should never go past 90 minutes. This is an average movie at best. Too much time was spent on Sandy's back story rather than just getting into it and letting us figure out who he is. People who know him tell us how funny and weird he is, rather than letting us see this for ourselves. Just re-watch Broadway Danny Rose or Click instead.
