Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part V (2022)
He did not have the high ground
Darth Vader clapped harder than I did when my first son graduated at the top of his class at Harvard. He made me feel alive and I peed my pants with that confrontation. I wish I could find someone who wanted me as much as Vader wants Obi-Wan. Pretty hot, not gonna lie.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Ignore the negative reviews. Star Wars is back
I'm shocked by all the negative reviews on here. After watching the movie, I can assure you that this hate is unwarranted and blown out of proportion. 2015 has been a bit of a sore thumb for me with movies, there were a few that Iliked, but really not that many. This was such a breath of fresh air. Let me address the hate that the negative reviews are complaining about:
Same plot as episode IV - There is some homage to the first movie, it's definitely there, but the people saying this is just one big reboot are HIGHLY exaggerating things. There still new content, and honestly don't think the story will play out exactly like old movies once we hit episode VIII, this was kind of meant to be a revival of the franchise after the prequels damage.
Stormtroopers of different gender or race - Honestly I hate the whole forced diversity thing people add now in movies and shows. None of this felt forced, honestly I never thought it would be that uncommon if there was a female or black skinned stormtrooper. Never once did I feel they were trying to be "modern".
There is a lot more complaints I'm hearing, but really, these people are just trying to be negative, a lot of the them are really scraping the bottom of the barrel for them. Anyways, let's talk about all the good in this film. A lot of the things the prequels got wrong by have been fixed here, and yes, Jar Jar is not on this film. The acting is done very well, there aren't any moments were you'll go "wow, that was bad". The new special effects and set are a great combination of the old style with modern special effects that make this movie look stunning, they avoid the overuse of CGI that the prequels had. The characters have to be one of the highest point of the movie, we have old characters; Han, Chewie, Luke, and Leia, and it's great to see all their faces again. Then we have new characters; Rey, Finn, Poe, and the main at antagonist of the movie Kylo Ren; each character is fun and I would like to see more of them. I was worried that Kylo Ren might be a copy and paste of Darth Vadar, he thankfully wasn't, there are a few similarities but he is unique. Finn and Rey are both quite entertaining and never feel shoved in. I never felt that any of the other characters were one dimensional or were ripped off from somewhere else. Most of all, this film has heart, I know it might sound a bit corny but you could tell that the creators actually cared and wanted this to be a good movie. Is this film perfect? No, no film really is. But I have no major complaints about it either. I would love to talk more about it, but I don't want to spoil anything, I find this to be especially true with Star Wars movies and this one is no exception. It's the kind of thing you need to know as little as possible about to enjoy it more. Go see it, it's completely worth your time.
Pixels (2015)
Not as bad as I expected it to be, but still...
I was expecting this to be horrible, and I was actually surprised that I found this movie to be entertaining at all. There was some moments that weren't very funny and feel a bit awkward. I feel like the first bit of the movies was better because it was more comedic and didn't take itself too seriously. But after the first fight, I found the whole thing to just be a bit silly, with only occasional parts that I laughed at. It started throwing in subplots that you really don't care much about and continually trying to be "serious", when it really comes off as being melodramatic and stupid. With better direction, I feel like this movie could have been saved, and believe it or not, MIGHT have boosted Adam Sandlar's career, which clearly, hasn't been very good lately. I really can't recommend this, and It's a shame I have to say that.
Clannad: After Story (2008)
Simply beautiful.
When I first heard of Clannad. I really just thought it was another silly, cheesy, and bad romance anime. I thought people were exaggerating how sad it was supposed to be. In all honest, all though the animation is good, the art-style was a big turn off for me. I ended up giving it a try after hearing a bit more about, and I watched season 1, and believe it or not quite liked it, it wasn't perfect, but it was much better than the way I originally imagined it to be. I liked it's humor and characters, even though I thought the main love interest Nagisa, wasn't a very interesting character. The romance was also done in a way that isn't obnoxious (I tend to hate romances because of this). There was also some decently touching and slightly sad moments in the series. I gave Clannad an 8/10. Then I watched Clannad: After Story. I can tell you right away that people aren't exaggerating about it. This second season is so well done you will never forget it. Admittedly, this series as whole isn't for everyone, but if you thought the first series was at least "ok", go and watch After Story right away. I seriously watched Clannad: After Story in less than three days and I'm someone who is extremely pressed for time. Although the first few episodes are lighter in tone like the first season, you soon begin to notice the series progression to becoming a very realistic and mature take on seeing the lead couple become parents. If you've heard anything about this show, then you know that there are some sad and heart wrenching parts, one event in particular which I will not mention to avoid spoiling anything, but it really had me in tears and was very emotional and sad, yet uplifting and powerful at the same time. Another thing I like about this series is that it avoids almost all stereotypes that appear in any type of romantic film or TV series. They seem to have the need to have the main couple stair at each other and say cheesy lines for a long time, or throw in a random sex scene that isn't really necessary. Clannad never does this type of thing, it makes this series so much better as a whole. Also, I now like Nagisa, her character shows a lot more in this season. Overall this is an experience that I wish everyone could see and enjoy, I know some might not be able to get into this, but if you can in any way you just have to watch to the end. Speaking of the end, if anyone tells you it's a cop-out, don't listen, if you actually use your brain for a few minutes the ending works well and is satisfying. This show actually taught me things. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it opened my eyes. Without a doubt a 10/10.
Kôdo Giasu: Hangyaku no Rurûshu (2006)
This show is full of crap.
I was't much of a fan of Code Geass R1, I never even watched the whole thing because I thought it was a passable show at best. So I skipped to this one to see if things got more exiting. But this sequel is absolutely bad. I watched about 4 episodes and it got worse and worse as it went on. There is a ridiculous amount of plot twists and deus ex machinas that defy logic in ways that insult your intelligence. The plot twist aren't very good, they feel forced and from those 4 episodes I did watch, there was one or more each episode and they really are just silly. The deus ex machine is even worse in my opinion, I probably can't list them all here since I haven't watched the whole thing, but when things two people using their Geases (I think that's how it is in plural form, I'm really not sure) to somehow STOP TIME, you know that something is very wrong with this show. I've read what happens at the end, and honestly, it's just completely idiotic, I won't say to avoid spoilers but there is no reason it should of ended that way, it was just an excuse to be "dramatic" when they were just being silly as usual. Not worth your time, I wouldn't even recommend R1, even if it is better, it's just mediocre, even if it looks magnificent in comparison to this.
The Amazing World of Gumball (2011)
It's a flip of the coin for each episode
A show like this is obviously going to be pretty silly and crazy with nothing much meant to be taken seriously. The question is: Do the writers make it work? The answer is, yes, except it only works half the time. One episode will be completely hilarious and just about everything put into it is very effective making it well worth the time, while another episode will just come off as being nothing but idiotic. You really have no idea what to expect each time around. My recommendation is to check an episode out every once in a while, but don't start from the beginning and then watch everything that's come out. It's a shame not every episode is good, because the good ones really are well done.
The Muppets. (2015)
Funny and has lots of potential. Needs to fix some things in other areas.
I've seen only bits of the older muppets show, and I did like it. So I watched this the day it came out, I knew however, that it would be aimed at a somewhat older audience. Opinions I think a lot of the jokes are pretty well written and the setting itself isn't bad. As a lot of reviews will point out, there is some added adult humor which was definitely not in the original, I honestly am not much of a fan of that, it isn't nearly as crass as shows with "The Office" style humor. However, these jokes are used a little too much and feel forced and a even a bit awkward at times. The good news is that it doesn't make up the entirety of the comedy. I think they should lessen the adult humor, at least a bit, not only does it make it a bit better for younger audiences, it also leaves the door open for more creative comedy. I will continue watching this to see how this show progresses.
Kôkyô shihen Eureka Sebun (2005)
Don't let the hype get to you.
I'm not much into romance or mecha, but I don't have anything against those genres either and I read such great reviews for this series that I decided to not pass the opportunity in watching this.I unfortunately let the fans get to me. Whether you liked this show or not, a lot of reviewers will point out that the first half is fairly slow, I could deal with that, believe it or not, I thought the first half of the show was better (not a popular opinion, and by better I mean OK at best). As the series goes on to the second half, the plot get's more interesting, and also, makes less and less sense. This is probably the show's biggest problem. Things such as strange fish-like monsters summoned (somehow?) out of no where killing random people, some strange purple goo that hurts people, an old guy who has something implanted in his chest and is able to control the mechs known as LFOs, and more unexplained things that will easily infuriate viewers. The main cast of characters are in a group known as the Gekkostate, a lot of the times, you won't really know what the characters are doing because it is so poorly explained. Most of the characters aren't that good, some aren't so bad. The main character Renton can get annoying with all his whining, but he isn't all that bad seeing that he has some likable attributes. Talho and Holland were actually decent characters as the series went on. Eureka on the other hand has hardly any personality at all (typical Rei clone), half of her lines are comprised of "Oh, Renton" or "Nirvash, please!", or her just crying and then staring without emotion. The kids that Eureka takes care of are extremely annoying. The main antagonist Dewey Novak' motives aren't really that clear and what happens to him at the end isn't explained. Almost all the other characters serve no purpose other than just being there. Take Dominic and Anemone, they only exist to fill time and to add another couple to the story. I hear a lot of people say that complaints like this just means "you didn't get the message man". Yes, there were themes of love and family, but it was hard to care seeing that I head a love-hate feeling towards Renton, while Eureka was very boring. The only characters I cared about were Holland and Talho and that was pretty much it. I ended up skipping a majority of the second half of the show just to watch the end. That ending... was so terribly cheesy, I won't say anything to avoid spoilers but it was one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen in my life. On the other hand I have no complaints about animation, it was very well done and it was hard not to like, the voice acting wasn't bad either (except Eureka who got annoying sometimes). I'm not saying this is one of the worst anime, but I certainly wouldn't call it a good one. If you enjoyed this series, that's fine, but I really can't see how.
Genocyber (1994)
Definitely one of the worst anime of all time.
Anime is such a fun world to dive into. However, don't expect every series to be good, because just like any for of media, some are good others just suck. This is an example of the latter. Genocyber is a 5-part anime OVA released in 1994. It is very controversial for it's extreme depiction of graphic violence, most notably, breaking the unwritten rule of graphically killing a child. Even if you are a fan of gory content in media, this isn't worth your time, unless you are a truly sadistic person. Why? Because it's plot makes absolutely no sense. Literally everything that happens is an excuse for shock value. Supposedly, this is about a girl with some sort of psychic powers and is able to become the Geoncyber (At least that what I assume it is). After that everything is completely lost in sadistic violence. The creators really should be ashamed of making this crap. Not only are they wasting everyones time, I'd argue they shouldn't be on the streets. If I had children and saw them coming near me I would grab a gun and tell them to leave my children alone. This is truly, one of the worst anime of all time.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Not terrible, but extremely overrated.
I can understand why so many people watched this film since it is a big budget Marvel film. But I really don't understand why everyone thinks this was so great. The plot lacked complexity; the whole plot seemed to be about a few freaks teaming up for almost no reason and then fighting the much stronger villain. The characters were pretty bland and boring, well, except maybe Rocket. I usually like Marvel movies but I was quite disappointed by this one. On a more positive note, the there were some pretty funny moments, and some pretty great special effects. Acting was decent. Overall, this movie is definitely not as good as other superhero films such as The Dark Knight or The Avengers, but sure as heck is not as terrible as Howard the Duck or Catwoman. If they do make a sequel, I hope it improves on the mistakes of this film. I would only recommend this to true Marvel fans, but if you are a more casual audience, I honestly can't recommend it to you.
