Swamp Thing (2019)
Entertaining with potential for greatness or utter stupidity.
First episode was solid enough, but with occasions of abject stupidity.
Great production values.
They did not give much time for a romance between Abbie and Alec. His "origin story" seemed rushed. Loved the nods to Carpenter's "The Thing."
BUT- why does NO ONE sound like they are from Louisiana or the Bayou? Why are the infectious disease people so freaking stupid? It seems like one has ever heard of universal precautions let alone contact precautions or airborne precautions (let alone HAZMAT gear). No staging area to change in the isolation room either. I'l just expose myself in my droplet precautions and then come right outside to the crowded hallway and change there. Let's just take every chance we can to get exposed to a potentially world-ending infection! By the way, none of the characters EVER asks for help from other law enforcement, the EPA, the national parks service, national guard, or anyone. Let's just go into every next move with no real plan, no precautions, no communication and no help (and let's stop for a bourbon or two). They didn't even try!
I liked that Abbie is doing everything to save the girl while stopping for drinks at every turn. She even gets yelled at by Mrs Sunderland in a bar! Maybe THAT is the Louisiana way? Reminded me of "Naked Gun" (in a non-comedy way). "Not one man on this force will rest for one minute until he's behind bars. Now let's go get a bite to eat."
Lastly; and this bugged me the most; the morgue. No precautions at at all. And just HOW did a 9 year girl get from an isolation/critical care room to the morgue (after pulling off all her monitoring equipment) without a single person even noticing? And just how close were those two places?
It was GOOD and entertaining with a tad too much stupid with regard to the Infectious Disease angle. I like the horror genre. I hope it gets smarter and scarier and grosser and not more stupid.
But DC, your track record is not good and you've already reduced the show from 13 eps to 10...
The Nice Guys (2016)
I am in disbelief!
I'll keep this short.
This is a vulgar, heartless, mean-spirited, unfunny, misogynistic movie. I won't include any "spoilers," but all but one character is wholly unlikable. It may have helped the director to watch a real period-piece of TV/Filmaking (like UK's "Life on Mars"). I am in utter disbelief that IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic gave this lazy, stupid, evil movie funny decent ratings. Seriously, it's horrible. Some movie company execs must have spent a lot of money padding the pockets of critics and/or setting up a campaign to write fake reviews on websites. It is very possible to make a film that is satiric, offensive AND funny. This movie is brutal with its cheaply constructed slapstick humor, its pedophilia-humor and its contempt for women. I am not exaggerating when I state that most of the people in the theater where I saw this were disgusted and offended (in a bad way) by this wreck of a film. Awful movie. Don't believe the BS reviews.
Star Trek Continues: Lolani (2014)
Undeniably Brilliant Retro
I grew-up in a Trek household. My father would bring us as a clan to Star Trek conventions and to the openings of Star Trek movies.
I grew up in a household that had the "old series" on videotape displayed on a bookshelf next to the collected works of Shakespeare. Even though it would have been appropriate adolescent behavior to rebel against Star Trek, I was won over. Over the years I have seen a lot of re-imaging of TOS. I watched "the next generation" and JJ Abrams' "re- boot." I have NEVER seen anything like this.
The energy and dedication that went into this series is, to me, unbelievable. It is not a re- imaging. It is not a cheesy, low-budget attempt. It is a well-crafted, labor of love that attempts, and achieves, to re-create the old series where TOS ended. It also attempts to do what the series did-- pick up real-world issues and channel them into the scripts (in this case, human trafficking). The result is nothing short of brilliance.
If I were transported back to my dad's childhood, the sets, costumes, effects and scripts would have been state-of -the-art. This series has to work to bring that exact, 1967-69 sets, music, etc back to life without it seeming fan-boy or stupid. It's akin to someone painting in the style of the Dutch masters with the same canvases and oils. This is impressive stuff (if you see it for what it is). Even the acting style, dialogue, and the music is set to portray the precise tone of TOS. It achieves. It achieves SPECTACTULARLY. I am amazed!
I also am pleased with how the series gives nods to the original in ways which are sophisticated and reverent (not, like JJ Abrams, for pure fan-boy appeal). I adore this episode in particular. It's troubling, touching, deep and sweet. I also admire how "Star Trek Continues" recreates the four-act structure of the original show.
This series brings back some wonderful memories, I am looking forward to bringing all the episodes to my family for Christmas. I am sure they (especially my dad) will be blown away by the similarity. The show may bring tears to my dad's eyes!
This is high-art in its reproduction quality. I cannot imagine the loving energy it took to bring this series to life in its current form. I hope that they can do exactly what they are setting out to do-- to complete the Enterprises 5-year mission.
Time Travel is possible! Star Trek Continues is not counterfeit nor is it cheap simulation. It's a true work of art made with love and adoration!
I know I have not reviewed this episode well-- I happily will ad my critique. I have seen all three of the current episodes and I am dumbfounded and amazed!
Legends (2014)
What a piece of crap!!!
Sorry if my title summed it up. I wasted 4 hours of my life on the first 4 episodes just HOPING this series would go somewhere interesting. "Homeland" needed a few episodes to get up to full speed.
This show is just garbage. Lazy, stupid, violent, xenophobic, misogynistic GARBAGE!!!!
I cannot believe anyone is giving this shitty, unoriginal, spy-show anything more than the minimum 1 star. It is more insulting that they harvested fine actors to deliver these scripts. They also paid off most of the mainstream media because this series deserved to be blasted for the low-level content it delivers and not praised because the actors they hired actually have talent. Their talents are wasted here (as was my time). No more! I'm out.
Go do something productive with your time. "Legends" is a turkey.
