Bobby the Hedgehog (2016)
Somewhere in here is a good film
But the filmmakers didn't flesh out the story. Our main character, Bobby, seems to have many obstacles in the film that get settled in a matter of minutes. Talk about anti-climatic. So much of the story is told through verbal exposition it might as well be an audio book. On the plus side? The animation is sometimes decent such as the birds. There's some cool scenes of flying and jumping that give the film a little momentum. There are many characters on screen but make little impact on the film. Had the filmmakers taken the time with pacing, story, and characters this could have been a fine film.
Final Destination 2 (2003)
2nd best of the series.
While I think 5 is the best, Final Destination 2 holds up quite well in retrospect. The effects are great and rather than have the characters know each other, they're all brought together by "fate." What makes this film not in 1st place is the characters aren't as fleshed out as the last one, and it seems to be more mean spirited. The son getting killed in front of the mom? The son at the end also being in killed in front of his parents? These movies are supposed to be gruesome fun, but seeing this makes me think more about these families needing to go to counseling.
The Promotion (2008)
2 Milquetoast Characters
Seann Scott is Doug Stauber, a down on his luck middle management of a slack grocery store. When Richard Wehlner, (John C. Reilly) arrives just in time for a new grocery location to open, the two characters compete for "The Promotion." The characters are supposed to be lacking backbone, but halfway through the movie I kept thinking to myself, why do I care about these characters? There's nothing to them other than their lack of confidence. The comedy was sporadic but occasional funny. The last act seemed to run out of steam and just end. Overall it's passable but not much more.
Planet 51 (2009)
Eh
Some of the 50's references are funny for a few minutes, but that's about all. The characters are fairly bland and forgettable except for the dog-like robot Rover. It seemed a little strange that the aliens spoke the same language but didn't understand a lot of commonly used words. The animation is fine.
Troll 2 (1990)
Guilty pleasure
Guilty pleasure. Some films are just bad, but this one is a classic, "so bad it's good" movie. I rate this totally on laughter and enjoyment. There's no way objectively this is a good film.
Rolling Kansas (2003)
OK at Best
Uninspired comedy that has some cute moments but is mostly flat.
