Ennu Ninte Moideen (2015)
A classic love story which will be never forgotten
'Ennu Ninte Moideen' is a film that truly makes you rooted to your seats .The film manages to hold the audience's interest till the very last scene! The story of Moideen and Kanchanamala set in the backdrop of the 1960's somewhere tugs at your heart. An irreversible tragedy but so beautifully portrayed by the director R.S.Vimal. Capturing the innate beauty of locales in Shoranur and the essence of the characters' emotions , cinematographer Jomon T John has done a brilliant job! The strongest quotient of the movie is that the script has been held together strongly by Vimal and that lends stability and authenticity to the film. Some excellent research has gone into the making of the movie and hats off to the team for putting together a classic movie woven with the perfect dose of drama , romance and some mind blowing music and background score.
One does not exactly expect 'Ennu Ninte Moideen' to break any new ground, since this is a story that thousands of couples have gone through - before and after Kanchanamala and Moideen came along - and yet, if it still manages to leave you all shaken up, its courtesy the honesty in its depiction and the countless ways in which it seeks to subvert our expectations of how it would all ultimately turn out to be.
Which is why the usual beats assume a spectacular power in the film, with the film maker and his performers infusing a rare might into this heartbreaking account of how everything - society, fortune, destiny and nature itself - transpires against a couple hopelessly in love, hurling them onto a whirlpool of doom.
We get to see one of the finest performances in recent times through this film. Prithviraj and parvathy get into the skin of their respective characters of Moideen and Kanchanamala. Prithviraj lives as moideen giving the all required energy,showing us the maturity and credibility of the actor in the film. Paravthy yet again proves her acting brilliance.She is definitely an actress who would attain more height in the times to come. Tovino thomas did his role brilliantly. Bala gets a meaty role after a gap and he does it with excellence. Another brilliant performance came from Lena who acts as Moideen's mother. Rest of the cast comprising of Saikumar, Sudheer karamana, Kalaranjini, Sasikumar etc did a good job.
The songs were beautifully composed by Jayachandran, Ramesh Narayan and Gopi Sunder. They were perfectly placed in the movie, without forcing on to us. The background score by Gopi Sunder was perfectly in sync with the mood of the film.
Altogether,'Ennu Ninte Moideen' is a film that is a must watch. A beautiful movie by Vimal who explored romance to a different dimension which is lost mostly these days. It takes you to the world of true and eternal love. For sure,this story of Moideen and Kanchanamala would stay in your hearts and will never be forgotten. A classic tale of love. Hats off to the entire team.
Premam (2015)
Nivin pauly and Alphonse puthren taking malayalam cinema to an another level!
This film is just mind blowing!,i have never seen such a well executed movie with a brilliant sound and screen play in Malayalam cinema.
As the title cards of Alphonse Puthren's 'Premam' came up, I couldn't stop thinking of those butterflies - the swallow tails and the cabbage whites, the blue bottles and the bird wings - that once flitted around with fragrant memories of an entire generation's childhood laden on their pretty wings. They seem to have wholly vanished and are no longer seen fluttering around these alley ways ridden with smoke and dust and have perhaps moved on to greener meadows where the sparkle of an unsullied dew drop awaits.
It is this perfumed whiff of reminiscences that the film rakes up with its very first scene that makes 'Premam' one of the best films that I have watched till now this year; one that it maintains till the very last scene that comes almost after three hours. Bursting with hopefulness and loaded with resilience, 'Premam' is a stunning cinematic piece that talks of the process of falling in love, breaking a heart, nurturing a stinging memory or two for the rest of your life and above all, letting go and moving on.
'Premam' follows its protagonist George (Nivin Pauly) and the three women who walk into his life - Mary (Anupama Parameswaran), his first love during those baffling pre-degree days, Malar (Sai Pallavi), his new teacher at college who surprisingly reciprocates his feelings and Celin (Madonna Sebastian) who finally lays down an anchor to his otherwise bobbling life.
And then there is love itself, and the different shades that the oldest of human emotions brings in its fray. It does take a few years for George to get over the dejection that his first love had brought along with, and when Malar grabs his hand and walks forward life sprouts flowers all around. It's when these petals had long wilted and withered by, that Celin arrives accentuating once and for all that fresh shoots are bound to spring up after the heavy rains.
'Premam' adopts a juicily unmarked conversational tone for the most part, and the audience draws in a few chairs and sits along with George and his pals as they plan and replan his life. It's no shocker then that his joys become ours as much as his grief does; his exultation and desolation are all ours to share as well.
'Premam' spellbinds you with some real awesome performances from a group of young actors who seem to have thrown caution to the winds and who have gone at their respective roles - long or short - with a vengeance. The casting director of the film merits a bow, for there is not one actor in it who looks out of place.
Nivin Pauly as George is tremendously remarkable, and comes up with one of his best performances till date. As he breaks down and walks away from the real love of his life, he manages to throw an entire cinema hall into silence with his tears, as much as he had driven them into irrepressible fits of mirth not much earlier.
The three girls are equally extraordinary, but it's Sai Pallavi who wins the show hands down, with a bravura feat as the guest lecturer Malar who wins over George's heart. She lights up the screen with her fabulous screen presence, and with the most precise of expressions underlines that she is here to stay. Madonna Sebastian with her curious Bambi-esque eyes and agreeable smile breezes in while Anupama Parameshwaran retains the youthful charm that is required of Mary to the hilt.
It's impossible to think of 'Premam' without that dazzling musical score by Rajesh Murugesan, with many a hummable number forming a part of the highly notable soundtrack. 'Premam' almost qualifies for a musical, and a decent one at that, since this is one film where you really do not mind those songs gushing into the narrative unapologetically; where the music camouflages itself and remains an indiscernible part of the account.
Equally arresting is the cinematography by Anand C Chandran, who throws in an assortment of splendid visuals that capture the essence of the film to the core. His camera is unhesitant and ventures as much to the corner of an aisle to catch an incessantly chirping sparrow in action or on to the placid waters of a pool where a wayward frog has landed himself in. The verdant greenness that pervades his indoor and outdoor frames is stimulating and this ocular wizardry that Anand throws in contributes much to the stellar film that 'Premam' evolves into.
'Premam' elevates Alphonse Puthren onto a pedestal of sharp film makers who have figured out the actual potential of the medium that cinema is. And in their competent hands long-standing tales assume ground-breaking forms and enthuse the viewers in ways and manners never seen before. Much more than an unabashed crowd-pleaser, which it surely is, 'Premam' is a bracingly alive film where almost everything,

PK (2014)
Aamir khan the legend does it again!
We keep seeing this man's brilliant movies,PK is the another one and arguably PK is the best film of Aamir's career.
A third person view is often far more objective than what you and I may have. Which is why there are bodies that can provide judgments, objectively, on matters we could end up complicating otherwise. Somewhat like a viewer, who can be brutally honest about the drawbacks in a film. Objectivity is probably what Hirani and his co-writer Abhijat Joshi sought to explore when they started developing the concept of this film. Hence the character of PK, one with an 'out of the world' viewpoint, literally.
PK, the film is not quite unique in its inception, sharing space with a very compelling Oh My God (2012),directed by Umesh Shukla. PK, the characters, lands on earth with an intention to understand it. God turns into his subject. And in process of him understanding the power that made us all, he pokes at faulty notions that are developed and protected by us.
Like his first two films, Hirani's PK is driven by a character and the way he functions. The most delightful part of the film hence is easily the protagonist. The story is about PK's pursuit of God to hear his request. Much like Kanji Lalji Mehta of OMG, who is told that it is only God who could answer his plea.
The screenplay is woven to provide PK and his actions credibility. The first half is dedicated to establish his plight while the second half moves towards a resolution. Clearly the resolution proved tougher. PK has a brilliantly written first half, making it an absolutely delightful ride till the intermission. It makes you laugh and at some point it could even make the tender hearts cry! It entertains certainly. The second half is when things get loose, and you start drawing comparisons with OMG, which easily had a stronger second half. PK slacks as it moves towards the end, in contrast with Hirani's last three films. Nonetheless it ends on a perfect note; one which should leave smile on the viewer.
Providing PK the biggest boost is lead actor Aamir Khan, in probably one of his finest efforts. With wide open eyes that never blink, Aamir is at his best. Anushka Sharma is perfectly cast. Sanjay Dutt, Sushant Singh Rajput add their bits. There is also Parikshit Sahni playing the disapproving father reminds of his 3 Idiots acts, and Saurabh Shukla playing the fraud God-man takes us back to his Batuk Maharaj act in Lage Raho Munnabhai. Not to forget the usual suspect Boman Irani, this time in a perfectly positive role!
The deficit in the screenplay aside, the director in Hirani shines again. Every other department of filmmaking is top notch. Even the songs, which did not quite impress as an independent album, blends perfectly well into the film. It is a film that has the Hirani stamp all over it - an entertainer with a message. And of course it too has tremendous repeat value.

Kaththi (2014)
A real heroism and an outrageous performances by every one!!!
"Straight of the sheath, Kaththi is sharp most of the time, but not always. AR Murgadoss has come out with a film which has a neat social message, packaged well with mass entertainment elements. Vijay carries the film in a tricky dual role, which brings out the star in him whether doing comedy, romance, songs, fights and emotional scenes".
The film's story revolves around Vijay's dual characters – Jeevanandham and Kathiresan. Jeevanandham is a social activist who fights against a large corporate, which is planning to usurp the fertile lands of the farmers. On the other hand, Kathiresan is a thief who has escaped jail and is on the run. How Kathiresan steps into Jeevanandham's shoes and leads the fight against the corporate forms the crux of the story.
"Vijay as Jeevanandham & Kathiresan has delivered a lifetime performance, and showed a brilliant variety in both the roles, albeit not even a great makeover between both the roles,"
"Technically, Kaththi is a storm. The film possesses stunning visuals thanks to George C. Williams. Editing by Sreekar Passed is neat, yet a few trims in the first half would have stepped on the pedal. The art direction is surreal, and the stunts do bring up the ante, especially the coin flip fight sequence.

Apothecary (2014)
A must watch!!!
Consistently echoing the timely and overpowering message that it conveys, tending to be a little over-emotional and repetitive at times, Apothecary comes out distinguishably strong and focused. When two doctors set out to produce a feature film, with almost every frame set in a hospital, and without the slightest dose of entertainment or any other commercial element, it got to be pretty serious business! That the plot confines itself to the all-important subject of medical ethics, which is called in question so profoundly in the present times, adds to the supposed intensity of the movie. The good intent and social commitment of the team behind the project is evident in every frame of the movie. The pick for good performance is Jayasurya, with Suresh Gopi and Indrans closely behind. To play the role of the miserably sick Subin Joseph, Jayasurya as an artist has taken great pains, sacrifices and character. Rest of the cast include Asif Ali, Abhirami (on her comeback project), Meera Nandan, Raghavan, Seem G Nair, Lishoy etc, who have given decent performance.

Vellimoonga (2014)
totally fun!!!
this film is totally fun all the way,Jibu Jacob's 'Velli Moonga' is a light hearted entertainer that will surely have you leaving the theatres with a smile on your lips. Having arrived with limited claims, here is a surprise winner that has hit right at the bull's eye! Velli Moonga' might not the kind of film that brings the house down with loud guffaws, but its a decent entertainer that is worth every penny that you spend on it. The story that it tells is not spanking new either, and yet it makes do with several, inspiring comic moments that are splattered through out. There are plenty of smiles in store, as Maamachan tries to make headway in life, much to the amusement of those around him. He deals with his adversaries and followers with an equal fervour, and do not be surprised if you laugh your guts out on at least a couple of occasions Biju Menon has been aptly cast in the role of Maamachan, and gives it his best shot. He is agile, and throws in the right amount of suppleness into the role, that makes his performance appear truly unforced. Aju Varghese is around in a noticeable role, while Nikki Galrani and Lena make the best of their very limited roles. Jibu Jacob's 'Velli Moonga' is a light hearted entertainer that will surely have you leaving the theatres with a smile on your lips. Having arrived with limited claims, here is a surprise winner that has hit right at the bull's eye!
