Killing Eve (2018)
Absurdity hurts
I don't expect a fiction work to make sense at every point but watching an MI6 agent shuts herself to her bathroom and hysterically asks for help by knocking on the window just like a small child, when a killer enters her house hurts me. Doesn't she and any other MI6 or MI5 agent have a gun? Arent they trained to dedend themselves? Why all of them just run away, when they see killer? Good for the taste of 10 years olds, not for me.
The Borgias (2011)
so many incorrect information...
This show is not a bad show from a TV show perspective but it has so many not correct information about history in it that watching it became really painful for a person who is interested and knows history. I don't expect a TV show to depict history hundred percent accurately but at many points these divergence from the facts seems purposefully made to give a message and it amounts to defamation. I noticed these for depiction of the Catholic church as well but as I know Turkish history much better it was much more painful to watch the third episode of the first season for me. In that it is said from the mouth of Cem Sultan that it is OK to kill your wife in Islam and you can practically marry as many women as you can and you can kill them by beating etc. Of course there are no such things in Islam. Then Cem goes to church and says that he found peace in Christianity and decided to convert Christianity etc. In reality it is known that Pope tried to convert him for a long time but he always refused. In fact he was the only person from the House of Ottoman who ever performed Hajj the Islamic pilgrimage even though it is obligatory for any Muslim with enough wealth. At another place he says to children of the Pope how he is happy to be among the Christian souls because the cruelty in the palace of Istanbul is beyond their imagination. Then he gives an example that the predecessor of his brother who is Mehmed II the conqueror of Istanbul, taken out the eyes of 22 of his male relatives who have claim to the throne and served the eyes to them in plates. There is no such thing again. In fact Mehmet II had only one brother who can have claim to the throne no other relative can have a claim to throne in Ottoman law. Finally even though the costumes of the Christans are very nice and accurate, the costumes of the Ottomans has nothing to do with historical Ottoman costumes and in my opinion they are very ugly.
So when I watched these scenes I remembered the scenes from Turkish religious movies where Christians first insult Christianity and finally enlightened by the light of Islam, convert to Islam :). There is nothing different.
Büsra (2010)
religious people from the eyes of secularists as of 2010
This movie tries to show the life of a religious girl in Turkey who wears a headscarf. However headscarf is a very controversial issue in Turkey and the producers could not escape from their secularist views on the issue. They have no idea about the real daily life of religious people in Turkey so they just depict clichés in their minds. It is sad that these people do not know anything about the daily life of a large portion of Turkish population. However it is tragic that they make a movie about it without learning their subject material. I think they don't care about it they just want to boost box office returns by taking advantage of a controversial subject. They especially target typical moviegoer in Turkey, who is a person living in a city and has above average education and income. This prototype also corresponds to relatively secularist, not much religious people. So they show them what they would like to see as of 2010. Similar to what "Yalniz Degilsiniz" was showing to religious people around 15 years ago.
It is good to see that the secularist camp in Turkey stopped seeing religious people as an imam with dirty beards, who swindle people, who use religion for his own interests, who take advantage of naive religious women etc. However now we have a cliché of semi-educated religious businessman who is an autocrat and misogynist, who makes his wealth thanks to corruption etc.
So if you are not a secularist who would like to perform mental masturbation by watching caricatures created by another secularist, I don't recommend this movie.
Die Fälscher (2007)
too much drama and very little action
When I first heard about this movie I was expecting a movie about a counterfeit operation with the drama of the jews in the background, however what I get is a movie with too much artificial drama with a counterfeit operation in the background. Unlike in the movies like Schiendler's List or The Pianist, the drama of the holocaust seems artificial to me, it is as if the director tries to appologize for the past instead of showing the reality as it is. For example a nazi officer introducing his wife and children to a Jewish prisinor is very far from reality. That scene seems to be added just to show that Nazi officers were also ordinary people with children and families but still they committed these terrible crimes. Or a prisinor tells in every opportunity that he is a honest citizen. The director tries to say us that OK I show a criminal jew as the main character but not every jew is like that. As I said previously in Schienler's List or The Pianist we can understand all these things ourselves or there are also good Germans etc. However in this movie the director forces us to understand the drama of the Holocaust that it becomes irritating and the main plot of counterfeit operation goes to the background.
