Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Simply Beautiful!
Whether or not you're a fan of anime, I guarantee you'll enjoy and love this movie.
It's a story of a young girl, who grows mentally into a young woman, filled with courage and kindness.
She travels with her parents to a new town, and on the way there, they find a shortcut, which leads them to a tunnel and an "abandoned theme park". This "theme park" is actually a gateway to the spirit world. Chihiro's (the protagonist) parents come across a deserted town, and while finding themselves starving, treat themselves to a huge sumptuous meal. As a result, they were turned into pigs.
Chihiro meets a boy named Haku (who's actually a spirit of a river), who helps her to get a job at the bathhouse which allows her to live there, whilst trying to find a way to save her parents.
One day, she meets a monster called No-Face. He's obsessed with Chihiro and tries to win her favour. He seems to reflect the personalities of spirits he's surrounded by, and that's the reason why he was so dangerous in the bathhouse as he was surrounded by greedy and not-so-good spirits. Later on he actually becomes a nice person, well I mean, a nice spirit who is no longer dangerous.
In the end, Chihiro finds a way to save her parents, and even helps her friend Haku escape from the clutches of Yubaba, the evil witch who runs the bathhouse.
This movie is simply amazing. The adjectives in the English dictionary, although vast, can by no means express the simplicity and awesomeness of this movie. This is truly one of the best anime films I've ever seen, and is loved by all, young and old.
All I can say is, watching this won't be a waste of your time.
Snezhnaya Koroleva (2012)
Brilliant!
This movie held me in keen anticipation ever since the start. It's a brilliant movie which is simply so intriguing and adventurous. Quite frankly I'm surprised this movie isn't more popular than Frozen, the most overrated movie of 2013.
The animation was fantastic. The drawings were superb and realistic (except for the fact that the troll looks more like an anteater). The only flaw-if you could call it that, was the English dub (since the original movie's in Russian). It was done rather poorly, and the lip movements didn't match the words at all. It may seem like a big deal, but after ten minutes into the movie, it won't matter, trust me, you'll be took caught up in the story.
I didn't understand one thing in the beginning though. If Gerda's dad was such a great wizard, why didn't he fly away on some arctic bird (or a magical carpet or whatever), instead of using a wagon and get his family and himself to safety, even if he wasn't powerful enough to face the Snow Queen on his own?
Also, didn't the Snow Queen kill off all the wizards? (except for Gerda and her brother Kai) So how did the flower lady give life to a plant, the ivy?
Another thing was that Gerda was very, very lucky to have met so many people on the way who ultimately helped her reach the snow queen. Talk about luck. It seems like the only reason those people were in the movie as sub-plots were to help her. The first people gave her a sledge, next she got a reindeer and after that she even got a boat that took her directly to the Snow Queen's castle. Of course, Gerda's a nice polite girl, but my, she's sure got a lot of karma on her side.
I may just be nitpicking though. This movie's amazing, and you should definitely watch it!
Penguins of Madagascar (2014)
Surprisingly great!
At first I didn't expect this movie to be any good. After all, they were just a side-show in Madagascar (this doesn't mean they weren't a great part of it). But even so, I refused to believe that a side-plot, which was taken out of a good movie could be directed to be, dare I say, on par with Madagascar.
But I was wrong. This movie was spectacular. There was never a moment where you wouldn't be laughing your head off.
Let's talk a bit about the story. It all starts when Skipper, the leader of the four penguins, starts to think differently. All the other penguins used to do the same things; like migrating to different parts of the Antarctic, for reasons they didn't even know. They do as nature instructs them, basically. But when Skipper, Rico (The Demolition Expert) and Kowalsky (The Intellectual) try to save one unborn Penguin from extinction, little did they know their lives would be changed forever. They're separated from the pack and start to live a life much different than that of the other penguins.
But all their care-free living comes to a standstill when they are captured by Dave; a vengeance-seeking octopus. His goal is to destroy the very nature of penguins; their cuteness.
So, this concept isn't so different from so many other movies. But since this move is so hilarious and fun to watch, you won't even notice. It's one of those movies you'll start to love as soon it begins. But it's not so different, not so much out of the box. You won't miss it once its gone.
There is something else though. Private, the fourth member of the squad, who doesn't really have a role in the team, eventually ends up saving the entire penguin race. Although his abilities weren't known to his friends, and perhaps even to himself, he was still able to achieve so much. Perhaps because he always wanted to help out, he always wanted to be part of the team, and maybe that's what made him so special in the end.
Overall then, this movie is great, fun to watch, but will be forgotten when a movie, much more comical and entertaining premiers.
The Book of Life (2014)
Not too shabby!
There's something about this film that I can't seem to wrap my finger around. It's not your typical animation movie, then again it's not that different either.
This movie revolves around three friends: two young boys and a girl. Maybe it's a bit cliché; two boys falling in love with their third best friend, a girl.
Both boys have different talents, one's a great guitarist (Manolo), a composer of romantic songs, and the other, a macho-save-the-world hero type (Joaquin).
But an unfortunate day befalls the three; Maria is sent to a convent school in Europe.
As life goes on, these three grow up to be young adults. Manolo is forced to become, as part of his family tradition, a bull-fighter, and while he certainly has the talent, can't bring himself to kill a bull. Joaquin on the other hand, goes on to become the town's saviour and hero, following in his father's footsteps.
They both await the day that Maria returns. But who will win her eternal love? So, you get the basic idea. The story's not too shabby, but isn't a new concept.
One thing I certainly enjoyed in the film was the humour. But that's not all the film has to offer; a moderate story and humour, no there's more.
The story teaches that although a person may possess great potential, he may not expose of it freely due to his fear of bringing shame to his family lineage and his fear of being an outcast.
One other thing I admired about the two friends Manolo and Joanquin was that they never lost sight of their own friendship, even whilst fighting for the woman of their dreams. In the end, they were both ready to give their life for the other, knowing fully well that the other friend might eventually get their dream girl.
So then, this movie has a lot of potential. It might not be the greatest animation of 2014, but it's definitely worth watching.
Top Gear (2002)
Best Motor Show Ever!
I've learnt everything I know about cars from Top Gear. In a way, I suppose my love for cars keeps growing as I keep watching this show. Which means this show would be perfect for petrol-heads. Normally, in a motor show, you would probably get bored after hearing the presenters blabber on about specifications of different cars. But with Top Gear, this wouldn't be so.
Top Gear keeps the excitement alive, they do the craziest things possible. You never know what may come next. In one episode they'll be trying to build a space rocket out of a car and in the next they'll be trying to play darts with caravans.
I have to say though, the cool wall is so one-sided. If a car is in subzero, it means that it's astonishing from Jeremy's point of view. But why should it matter if a great car is driven by a bunch of dweebs? Cars should be judged based on their looks!
Another great comical factor about Top Gear, is obviously, the Stig. The secretiveness towards his character, the jokes they make about him, and the way he acts is sublime.
In comparison, I once tried to watch the U.S version of Top Gear. And quite frankly, it was a bore. Sure, they drove fast cars which were fun to watch at first, but later on, the show gets rather boring.
This then, is the ultimate in motoring shows. I've been watching top gear ever since I was about twelve, and I can't suggest any reason as to why you may not want to watch it.
White Collar (2009)
One of the greatest, most exciting and action-packed serials out there!
White Collar was always a great show, right from the beginning. As the show progressed, it got more and more interesting. The whole cast was perfect for their respective roles (especially Mozzie), and I never caught anything that could be considered "poor acting".
So then, what makes White Collar stand out? Perhaps the excitement of every episode. You never know what may happen. It's not predictable. There are many other shows out there that feature cops chasing bad guys, like Criminal Minds, Castle, Hawaii-Five-O and so on, and don't get me wrong, I enjoy all of those serials, but white collar is certainly in its own league. It's unique; and I suppose that's what makes it so exciting.
When CBS announced that the sixth season would be the last, I, like many others were greatly disheartened and distressed, and why wouldn't we be? It was a great show. They say that it's better for things to go out with a bang, before things get too boring (yes, I'm referring to Big Bang Theory), but white collar proves this to be an exception. Perhaps it went out too soon.
One thing I never quite understood, was how Peter and Elizabeth were so close. They were married for ten years and still kept the romance going. Romance never lasts for that long. Ten years later, and they still felt like doing it? Surprising.
Moving on, the way Keller died in the end was by far, the worst thing the screen-writers could have come up with. Keller's not stupid enough to die that way. He would have taken the hostage and vanished round the corner, ordering Peter not to follow him. And Peter would obviously have obliged, because he would never endanger a citizen intentionally (which means Keller would have sufficient time to make an escape). And yet, Keller, stupidly raises his gun and tries to shoot Peter. It seems like the producers and screenwriters didn't know how else to end the show with his character going scot-free, and decided to have him killed in, let's face it, the stupidest way possible. But overall, when it comes down to it, White Collar, definitely was, and will always be, one of the best shows out there!
The Lego Movie (2014)
Astonishing!
At first, I was leaning towards the direction that the movie wouldn't be so great. I loved playing with Lego blocks as a kid, and that's why decided to watch the movie in the first place. Just as the movie was starting, I realized I didn't like the graphics so much. (Yes, I realize that's how it's supposed to look, but still.) I even considered discontinuing it. But as the movie progressed on, I fell more in love with the concept. How a nobody, a person who lacked self-confidence, who so desperately wanted to fit in, could do so much for the world. It goes to show that, no matter what, if you believe in yourself, you can reach great heights, heights you never thought were possible to scale. I admired the part at the end, where the movie tied in to the real world. (a bit like toy story). The father, whom his son portrayed as the villain, learns to appreciate his son and his capabilities that he was too busy to notice he had. It will be hard to make the second part better than this one, but I have faith. Summarizing, it was a great movie, loved the concept and you should definitely watch this one!
