Underwhelming
9 March 2019
I was really hoping that my preconceptions were wrong - I really wanted this movie to be, at the very least, fun and enjoyable. Alas, it was neither a good film in its own right, nor was it a good addition to the MCU, which is unfortunate to say the least. The acting was bland, Larson, in my view, having been badly miscast, with many people saying that Emily Blunt could have made a better Captain Marvel. The story was the definition of a superhero blueprint. Goose and Jackson were probably my favorite things about this movie, which says a lot. Then, there is the issue of the existence of this film in the first place - if they really wanted a 'strong female lead' (with which, as a woman, I already have an issue), they should have filmed a Scarlet Witch, or even better, a Black Widow origin story... Cap Marvel is an obscure and rather disliked character (as can be seen by the number of time her runs were cancelled) who does not deserve to sweep in and save the day in Endgame. I will be deeply hurt and disappointed if this will be the case - an overpowered nobody, who was never a part of the original well-loved team, to play as a sort of 'deus ex machina' in the final movie. The marketing for the movie did not help either, but this is a review of the movie, and not the scum tactics employed by the advertisers. Hence, as much as it saddens me, I cannot in good conscience give this movie more than a 4, due to its lack of originality, bad casting, underwhelming script (seeing as the writers have done well in the indie film department prior to the making of this movie), as well as the late introduction of a new character (into the cinematic universe, that is - I am well aware of the role played by Cap M. in the comics) into a beloved series. Side note: I also don't believe that the people giving this movie either a 1 or a 10 are doing anyone any favours - you do realize that your scores just balance each-other out, meaning that the rating between 2 and 8 still count more than your vote? Don't waste your vote - be reasonable. (I am just tough to please, hence the 3 rating)

A movie that deserves to be seen
22 August 2017
(Potential spoiler in reference to similar movies)

As many others have pointed out, the movie is quite simple and linear. Yet, in this case, it is a feat rather than a failure. Due to this, the attention of the viewer is never redirected towards insignificant events or characters - everything: every scene, gesture, word and phrase matter. None of them are fillers, which are nowadays so widely used in movies, simply to capitalize on screen time. No. This movie is out to simply tell you this story - nothing else. Take of it what you will, but I guarantee that you will be feeling some sort of strong emotion - whether it be happiness, disappointment, disillusionment, sadness...

Yet that is what the movie is really about. Feelings, emotions, thoughts, deliberations... both conscious and subconscious. Seeing the world from a different perspective. Which is another thing worth mentioning. The second time you watch this movie, you will no longer be thinking what you did on the first go. Keith will no longer be the 'edgy and obnoxious kid, whom the screenwriters purposefully over-dramatized to appeal to the younger audience.' Believe me. "Yay, another 10 Things I Hate about you/fault in the stars/now is good" were essentially my first thoughts. (Great movies (minus TFIOS)), but can't really compare oranges and potatoes.) Very well executed and well acted, as well as fun to watch. Nothing to complain about besides the questionable character interactions/the occasional less-than- necessary scene.

Definitely one of my favorite 'romances' (if you can call it that, as rom is not the primary focus here); right up there with Jeux d'Enfants.

So just do yourself a favour and watch it, preferably with an open mind (as I'm sure this style and type of film doesn't appeal to everybody).

Geek Charming (2011 TV Movie)
7/10
Surprisingly good (for a Disney channel movie)!
21 August 2017
(The 7/10 rating is just to counterweight the movie snobs who rate this movie as if it was meant to be freaking Godfather part 4.)

Honestly, everyone should chill and live a little. This movie is no masterpiece, but it was not meant to be one! The target audience are tweens - for whom this movie is perfect for. And, in fact, I myself enjoyed this piece quite a bit (at the fragile age of 17).

The idea is basic, let's be honest. However, the execution and the acting (in particular by Sarah Hyland) are definitely commendable and noteworthy. The style stands out from that of other 'mass produced' Disney Channel flicks (such as Starstruck, 16 Wishes, etc), with the occasional cuts to the footage supposedly from Josh's camera. It definitely does a lot to give the movie its own identity, and with it the chance to stand out from other, mediocre, productions.

As a side note -- this is one of those 'feel good movies'. If you are not a movie snob or a hard-ass geek, then give it a watch, even if it's just for laughs. You will (probably) enjoy the experience (if not the movie).

Cheap, overrated ripoff
15 August 2016
Right, well. Never thought I'd live to see the day when so many people, so many original fans of the SW movies, would give such a cheap, poorly-written excuse of a movie so much positive attention. This has been mentioned time and time again, so no use of repeating it. But f^ck it. THIS. IS. A F^CKING REBOOT. disguised with pretty CGI and seemingly 'new' characters. Right, Disney. JJ. You might have fooled many, but not all. The characters in the original trilogy (and the prequel) were *memorable*. They were *fleshed out* role-models. They actually seemed like real human beings. But this? A typical over-powered lead followed by an annoying, irrational and nonsensical side-kick with a serious case of megalomania. Ah, scratch that. BOTH of them are over-powered megalomaniacs. Typical marie-sue/gary-stu situation here.

Don't even get me started on how pathetic it was of Disney to bring in the old characters from the original trilogy simply to gain the approval of old fans. This one is undeniably on them. Oh. And that (Possible spoiler) death was there to simply create a 'shock effect'. (Spoiler Ends) No comment on the ending. It was one of the most predictable endings I have ever seen. No effective atmosphere setting what-so-ever throughout the whole thing. The screen writing was not too awful, but bad enough to have me cringe from time to time. The casting --- ... Oh the damn casting. Bringing noobs into a well- established series might have been a mistake. The acting speaks for itself. What else? Repetition, monotonous speeches, sh^tty back-stories, no realistic character development, and sooo... much... more...

Right... Now for the few things I enjoyed in the movie. 1. The CGI and the SFX were amazing - they were what ultimately got me through this 2.The costumes/other works by the art department 3. The scenery - good stuff 4. John Williams 5. Poe was an interesting character. I just wish he had played a larger role in the story 6. C3PO was a cute little guy 7. Some moments had me chuckling- probably the only aspect of the movie that kept true to its origins

And... Yeah. Pretty much it. Thus, the rating of 3. Harsh, but accurately relays my feelings towards this piece of polished crap.
