Eden Lake (2008)
Take note, Hollywood.
This is how you do a "murderous rednecks" horror movie. Uncompromising, no comedy, no screeching girls. Not filled with radioactive, deformed, chainsaw-wielding cannibals that can hardly speak, but with people who at first might seem like your average grumpy neighbours. Unlike the formulaic trite that Hollywood pumps out, this is a horror movie that stays true to the meaning of horror instead of being a.litany of clichés. That of course also means that it's cruel (not cruel like "torture porn", but cruel like reality can sometimes be) and you shouldn't watch it if you have a weak stomach or an important appointment the next day. And whatever you do, don't show this movie to kids, the movie deserves its 18+ rating.
P. S.: I know Hollywood won't take note. Formulaic trite just sells too well.
The Expanse: Triple Point (2018)
Have any of the creators ever had contact with a real military?
Rarely have I seen such BS. I'm used to Hollywood taking liberties, but this episode stretches suspension of disbelief beyond the breaking point. When Admiral Souther mutinies, he doesn't deem it necessary to disarm the opposing Admiral Nguyen and his goons and immediately and secure the bridge, as every competent officer would do, to prevent exactly what happened next. Instead he starts to give his little mutiny speech while still surrounded by guns.
Then, without ever hearing any of the proof for the "illegal war" offered by Admiral Souther, 5 UN ships immediately join the mutiny without even asking for confirmation. Apparently chain of command or confirming they heard right means nothing to them.
And then a mutiny attempt happens AGAIN, because Admiral Nguyen, unwilling to learn a lesson from the demise of Admiral Souther, starts a little debate club ("...declare yourself now") in a tense and time-critical situation, while still surrounded by armed mutineers. He unsurprisingly and deservedly catches a bullet for that.
A military this incompetent and dysfunctional would have been taken apart by the opposing Mars forces within the first week of fighting. All the Mars forces would have had to do is to send a ship disguised as a UN ship into the battle, loudly declare "this war is illegal, you have been lied to" and the UN fleet would immediately start infighting and destroy itself, exactly as it did in this episode.
I would have given the episode one bonus star had the observing Martian commander laughed her ass off after witnessing the UN incompetence.
What really pisses me off is that this must have been intentional. Given that over a dozen people were involved in the creation of that scene, someone must have noticed the idiotic writing and unsuccessfully raised an objection.
