Escape from Pretoria (2020)
So much potential is wasted on this one.
Thought crime and the keys are the main things that keep Escape from Pretoria from being a classic prison movie! In fact, the keys are very important here, the vein of the film about freedom and idealism flows here. The film quickly captures the incident that caused Tim Jenkin and Stephen Lee to enter from the outside and says the real story is inside. In the atmosphere of the 1970s when racism was widespread and the rights of black people to life were disregarded, Jenkin and Lee continue their activist identity in prison. We see the two very short outside. They are building a leaflet dispenser (bird bird), caught and put inside! Jenkin's engineer head and passion for freedom are constantly looking for ways to escape from prison! Returning to the world of prisoners; When Tim and Stephen open up their escape ideas to the prisoners around them, they are obviously not enthusiastic. Because the wish of the first prisoner is to escape from there. But this can involve long and deterrent routes. Alex Moumbaris is the only one who believes in these two minds and is united with them. Because he is aware of a life that has escaped from outside. It is also noteworthy that the prisoners do not tell each other while watching the movie. There is almost no clash between prisoners. There are only differences of opinion. That is why our trio is taking firm steps on their way, everything is quite easy except for a few minor snags. I couldn't help saying that maybe this is the movie's hoax!
Joker (2019)
Joker
Batman mythology is now such an integral part of global popular culture that the character and the world it contains can be fitted to any tone of storytelling or even genre. On the one hand, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy is as realistic as possible, while on the other hand, the 1960s Batman sits in the camp genre, while animated examples such as the Lego Batman Movie get teased, they also manage to offer something new about this mythology. The yang of Batman Ying's super villain is in the same position as the Joker, although the question among fans is not whether or not they like the Joker, but which Joker is their favorite version. While the Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger argument passes, those who love Batman's animation point out that Mark Hamill's vocal performance is the highest quality Joker. Jared Leto's Joker even has fans for sure, although I haven't seen one personally yet. That's why I wasn't very interested when I heard that there was an origin story focusing on the Joker filmed last year. The more explanation there is about the past of characters such as the Joker and Michael Myers presenting unmotivated violence and chaos, the more their effects will fade. But if this origin story captures the essence of the character tremendously, while the story takes place in the 1970s, but approaches the present-day sociopolitical violence in a straight and honest way, it is not only that Martin Scorsese's two masterpieces about marginalized, unstable and mentally unbalanced men are Taxi Driver and If he honors The King of Comedy into the 21st century, at least it deserves an enthusiastic praise. Professional clown Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), who dreams of becoming a comedy star in the middle of Gotham, full of crime and depression, because of the income imbalance where the rich are getting richer and the poor getting poorer every day, says he can't control his smile as well as complaining that everyone treats him like a human mat. He is dealing with serious mental and neurological diseases. With no logic to his existence other than caring for his elderly mother (Frances Conroy), Arthur's stress and depression becomes overwhelming, and he spends his anger at the world killing three yuppie Wall Street brokers. Coming from the world of comedy, director Todd Philips, who deserves praise for overhauling such a dark drama with so much confidence, even though he handled the violence that Arthur enjoyed with as direct and disgusting reality as possible, and at the end of the day this character actually created the sociopolitical revolution. Although it shows how narcissistic he is in it, I'm sure some of the audience will look at this version of the Joker as an icon of revolution. I guess that there will be a lot of "heavy writing" about this movie, especially in the United States, when marginalized men like Arthur pick up an automatic gun once a week and kill a lot of people.
Tenet (2020)
Typical Nolan...
Tenet is a new and crazy manifestation of his visual, auditory and "temporal" passions. Memento's backward-flowing narrative, Inception's characters wandering through layers, and Dunkirk's narrative of three different actions in the same war without being noticed in temporal terms, highly demonstrated that Nolan has a time fetish in every aspect. This time, the phenomenon of time spreads throughout the movie and the audience is felt, starting from the title. The Palindromic name, whose pronunciation is the same from both sides, is also reflected in the characters' relationship with time. The threat from the future but affecting the past, characters who can live the time in both directions, and the reversible flow make up the story in a compelling way, although a little confusing. At this point, we can contribute a line from the movie to the audience watching the movie; "Don't try to understand it, feel it." Because Nolan wants you to do this more.
In the movie, there is a main character who is often stated to be a hero. It is claimed that it will save humanity from a possible 3rd World War or, on the contrary, from the destruction of the world. The fact that Nolan has often stated that he wanted to shoot a Bond movie, being a stylishly dressed hero / agent and choreographically approaching the genre will immediately remind the audience of Bond movies through this hero. Bond atmosphere dominates the atmosphere in a significant part of the film. A Bond who is in the midst of temporal transformations, in gigantic scenes, and at the center of a science fiction story, must be exactly the character expected of Nolan. The fact that the character has to wear a mask while living an important "time period" in a scene has been added to the notes as an interesting coincidence for today. The fact that the opening scene of the film is watched in an opera house in a moment full of audiences and in a fatal manner will be remembered as a detail that adds coincidence. At this point, by the way, it should be said that the supporting characters and their formation contributed negatively to the film. The characters whose background is in the air, sometimes look cartoonish, who have a problem of credibility in their relationships, and their maneuvers in the story are a little damaging compared to the visual magnificence. After all, the movie will definitely become one of the most important movies for action cinema over the years. The movie, in which you will have difficulty understanding how 150 minutes passes, the perception of time is very well fed to the tempo, and we will see a lot of magnificent scenes, will tire even action lovers in a good way. The tempo is almost flawless, supported visually by a great job. Tenet has a dozen of successful action scenes that will be talked about a lot in a normal movie, even if there is only one, and they are all impressive. The stereotypical car chase scenes, the tension-filled moments at sea, the fight scenes, the well-planned airport scene, and many powerful scenes that don't come to mind at the moment of writing. Viewers who are addicted to action cinema will surely leave the hall to admire the movie.
The Ottoman Lieutenant (2017)
Finally a non-Armenian view to 1915.
First of all, great cast and cinematography.
Good script and a fresh look to 1915, which was necessary, one sided propaganda movies about 1915 financed by the Amenian lobby doesn't tell the whole truth about the issue. This movie we can call a little bit "objective" in comparing with the other ones and give the viewer a chance to see the other side of the story, a chance to have another perspective. A must see.
