Road House (2024)
Good Time
I haven't seen the original. I wouldn't even know the original existed if it wasn't for Family Guy Road House jokes. I went into this move with low expectations but an openmind and was very pleasantly surprised.
It's a good action movie with fun humor. Overall, it's just a fun time. This move was 2 hours long but it didn't feel like it dragged on too long and I was so into it I would have thought it was only 1 1/2 hours long.
This is one of those very rare movies where no fight scene drags on too long and you don't once go "this is taking too long". Every fight scene was the perfect length.
Jake Gyllenhaal was great. He really nailed the role. I'm glad he didn't play it as "grrrr I am angry tortured dude with lots of muscles" like certain other typecast beefy action dudes would have. He brought a lot of depth and subtlety. I underestimated him but he really showed he was a great actor in this.
Marmalade (2024)
Panic Pixie Dream Girl to the extreme
I thought I knew Panic Pixie Dream Girl before this movie but all other Panic Pixie Drean Girl tropes pale in comparison to this movie. It was so painful to watch.
Good cast but terrible writing. The Marmalade character reads like a character written by a 13 year old boy who had never interacted with a real girl in his entire life.
It had potential but the pace of the story was so agonizingly slow. It has a normal runtime of around an hour and a half but feels like four very long hours.
I didn't care for it at all. I could not look past the Panic Pixie Dream Girl on steroids. Every scene with Marmalade just got worse and worse.
Fast Charlie (2023)
Surprisingly Good
It's a surprisingly good film but the love interest angle took me out of the film because I found it so unbelievable. He's old enough to be her father or grandfather. Ick. Not a love interest. A father/daughter angle instead of icky love interest would have worked much better.
Good movie, though. Great acting from all and clever writing. It's not just another blah shot people movie with eyerolling dialog. Work and thought clearly went the whole movie and it shows.
I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who likes action movies, especially those with good writing and good acting. If it wasn't for the distracting age difference of the romance attempt I'd give it a 10/10.
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)
Can't Act
I can overlook bad lightning and a low budget and even poor writing but I can't stand a movie with bad acting and *everyone* is terrible. They're all so bad it makes me wonder if they deliberately found terrible actors on purpose for some bizarre reason because I can't fathom them all being this bad on accident.
It's such a shame everyone is so bad at acting because, poor writing aside, it would have been impressive they filmed it in 10 days.
I hope someone else makes a Winnie the Pooh horror movie because it's a cool concept but do not waste your time with this movie. The bad acting is just too painful and embarrassing to sit through.
Emily the Criminal (2022)
It was fine
Emily the Criminal was fine. It was nothing fantastic. It was boring but decent enough.
I wouldn't watch it again and I wouldn't recommend it.
There was good acting but it had a real tv-movie quality. It was nothing to write home about. If it wasn't for Plaza I would have stopped watching.
I kept waiting for it to get better and more interesting but what you see is what you get.
It's the type of movie you have playing in the background. It certainly doesn't hold your attention. It tries but it's simply mediocre. It's not a waste or time but is forgettable. I really wanted to like it but it doesn't get higher than a 3/10 and that's being generous.
Jerry & Marge Go Large (2022)
Lovely time
I didn't look at my phone once during this movie it was so good. It was a lovely, feel good, funny movie. I really enjoyed it. It's just a good watch. No unnecessary drama or boring parts. Fantastic pacing and every character was well written and felt important, even the small parts. Amazing acting from every single person on screen. I loved it. I can't recommend it enough.
Day of the Dead (2021)
Good Zombie Show
It's a decent, worthwhile zombie show. Watched all 10 episodes in 2 days. I enjoyed it. It was an entertaining experience. I really liked some of the things they were doing and hope there's another season. It definitely has that specific scifi channel low-mid range budget feel that's very apparent with some of their shows but it wasn't bad. Some lines were cheesy but there were more good moments to make up for it.
I really don't think it has anything to do with the movie though. They really should have named it something different and not tried to tie it into the movie for the sake of free publicity because it's just another zombie show. In fact, I think they really hurt themselves by trying to say it's tied to the iconic movie because it's really not and would have been perceived better if they had presented it as a new zombie show instead of trying to piggyback on a well-known film's reputation and set itself up for disappointment when the viewer quickly sees its just another run-of-the-mill zombie show.
I definitely get the low ratings because the publicity for the show did pull a bait and switch but it doesn't deserve such a low rating. It's really not a bad show and it's not the show's fault it was advertised so poorly.
Dune (2021)
Only Prologue
It was 2hr 30min of prologue. Nothing happened. Part One can't stand on its own. Without Part Two ready to watch immediately, it's just a waste of time. They should have just made a 4hr movie from the start instead of splitting it up. As a new viewer of the material, I feel like I wasted 2hr 30min of my precious free time on something I wish I had known before hand was an incomplete story and can't be enjoyed on its own. If I had watched waited and watched Part 2 with 1 then I would have probably felt differently but own its own its not worth watching now.
Midnight in the Switchgrass (2021)
I like it
It was more like a TV movie but it was fine and I liked it. There was definitely over the top moments but it doesn't deserve the extreme hate. It's no worse than any other movie in this genre. It seems like most are just hating on Megan Fox for the sake of hating her.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Bad writing
The concept is good but the writing is bad and boring. Great actors but terrible material. It was a complete waste of time. It has good elements to it but it never came together and was a complete mess.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Loved it
I loved it! It was Pirates of the Caribbean good and exciting. It's like this generations Pirates of the Caribbean. I really enjoyed it. It was a great story. It was the perfect balance of comedy and drama and fantasy. It's a great movie for all ages.
Finding Alice (2021)
Waste of time
Acting is good but the story is a complete waste of time. Watched the whole season thinking surely it would get better at some point but it didn't. It dragged on and on. 6 episodes should have been 2-3 max. Horrible pace and nothing was accomplished after 6 episodes. Wish I had never wasted my time on this. It could have been pretty good if the story had actually progressed. Instead of stretching it out into two seasons it should have been one.
Thunder Force (2021)
Fun!
It's a fun superhero movie with awesome well written women. That's such a rarity. It was fun, heartfilled, and actually funny. I loved it!
And regarding negative reviews, please if this was a men leading movie then the same people wouldn't be able to shut up about it. It's just plain old sexisum and not being the center of attention. What cry babies. It's an amazing movie that never once objectified a woman and has main female action heroes in their 50s. It's the perfect uplifting, fun movie for 2021.
It's a fun movie that doesn't kill women or sexual them or objectify them and also has women in their 50s as action heroes. Like come on. That's like a once in a lifetime find at this point. Add well written, entertaining, and funny, too. It has everything you could possibly want.
Monster Hunter (2020)
Fun Monster Movie
It's a monster movie. It's a fun monster movie with action, some funny bits, a great bromance between the two leads, and delivers a fun, entertaining time. It didn't have that super obvious feeling it was based on a video game. It felt like I was watching a movie instead of a game very obviously adapted into a movie.
I came for Milla Jovovich fighting monsters but stayed because it was actually good.
I never heard of the video games prior to watching so my enjoyment and opinion comes solely from the movie.
Dark/Web (2019)
Addicting
It has more of an Outer Limits vibe than Black Mirror. It's oddly charming and addicting. It's a neat idea and cleverly done. There's the overall story arc and also little side stories that seem unrelated and random but are actually important and play into the overall story.
Please watch at least the first three episodes. I didn't care for the first episode, and personally don't think it was the strongest way to start off the series, but the second episode was more interesting and by the end I was intrigued and then once I was on episode three I was addicted. I watched them all in one sitting and really loved the journey.
It's the type of story where, at the end, you are rewarded with a great conclusion and the experience of seeing all the little clues and pieces that were laid out all come together.
If you like good journeys and odd, but good, stories I totally recommend it.
Undone (2019)
Odd Good
It's odd, but good. It really pulls you in and is easy and fun to binge-watch. It's an unique story and I can't wait to see season 2.
Highlander: The Raven (1998)
Decent Enough I Guess
Apparently Elizabeth Gracen and Paul Johnsson hated each other in real life and boy does it show! Amanda and Nick are supposed to have sexual chemistry but every scene with them together is uncomfortable to watch because there's always an undercurrent of hate that's very off-putting.
The show itself is fine and the stories are decent enough (not great but not bad either), but the show is best when Amanda and Nick aren't sharing scenes. That unintended hatred between them is very hard to unsee once you see it.
I wish the show would have been about Amanda instead of being the Nick (and Amanda) show. Amanda never feels like the main character of her own show. It focuses more on Nick than it does on Amanda who is by far the more interesting character with a vast well of potential that is never tapped.
The show is fine but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it and I only kept watching because I liked Amanda.
Bless the Harts (2019)
No, no, god no
I don't understand how this even got made. It's horrible. From the animation, to the story, and even the voice actors, it's all horrible.
There's no doubt this'll quietly die--as it deserves.
The Hunters (2013)
Cool concept
I liked it! Some of the dialog could have been better but the overall story was good. I think it's better suited for a TV show format than a movie, though.
UglyDolls (2019)
Skip it
It's a nice message, but it's such a boring delivery that the whole movie comes off as a waste of time. The voice actors did a mediocre to poor job and the animation had no business being this bad for such a big budget movie. And the songs? What a snore. They were so boring that I had to frequently fast-forward because I couldn't stand it.
I get what they were going for, but it was extremely poorly executed. With such a good cast and such a large budget there really is no excuse for this movie turning out so poorly.
Final Space (2018)
Fun, Deep, Cinematic
Final Space is the best animated show I've ever seen. They make breathtaking cinematic scenes seem effortless. Truly a unique and captivating show.
Reef Break (2019)
Fun, Unique
This is a fun, unique show with interesting stories and fantastic main and side characters. Poppy is a joy to watch and brings something special to the main character. There's good music, great storylines, and never a boring episode.
I haven't seen anything like this before on tv. The best comparison I can make is that it reminds me a bit of White Collar (2009) with the suave alleged criminal working with the police as a consultant. It also reminds me of The Finder (2012) because of the beach setting and fun, smart skills of the main character.
Rubinrot (2013)
Surprising Good?
Did not see this coming, but I actually really enjoyed it! There were some cheesy moments with not so great writing (or acting), but overall it was a unique story that I was throughly invested in by the end.
Give it a chance and I think you'll be very surprised.
(Full disclosure, as an adult woman, I am not the target audience, but if I were younger I would think this were the greatest movie ever and not notice the minor flaws. Kid/pre-teen me would give this movie a 10/10 while adult me who has higher expectations gives it a 9/10)
Brightburn (2019)
Neat concept & well done
I was skeptical of the horror, superhero, and thriller genres all coming together, but it was very well done. It's a great story with a nice balance of thriller and horror with a very grounded take on if a superhero came to earth as a child.
Be aware there is some gore, but it's not too over-the-top and pretty standard for the horror genre.
The concept isn't something I had seen before in a movie and I really enjoyed. It's was a proper thriller, horror with a new element thrown in to keep things interesting.
Kim Possible (2019)
Very Human
There's nothing wrong with vulnerability. This is a story of Kim finding herself and confronting change. Yes, sometimes Kim is vulnerable, but a female character is still strong if they show vulnerability.
I enjoyed the animated show as a kid and think this is a great take on brining the concept to live action while appealing to everyday things kids face--fear of change; how to handle not being the best at something; discovering who you are including not defining your self worth by your talents or skills.
It has some great messages.
Sure, it's a little cheesy at times but so is every single Disney Channel tv movie ever. Overall, it's just as good, if not better, than other Disney Channel movies.
I really enjoyed this take on Kim Possible and found it real and very human. From the heroes to the villains, everyone is very believable and grounded in reality.
