Mighty Cruise Ships (2014)
Narration is annoying.
The narrator can't say her "s'es." She constantly says "thip" and "athore" among other mispronunciations. It's so distracting and my husband and I just laugh all the time. Otherwise the shows would be "interethting" to watch. They are like commerthials for the cruise thip industry but that's understandable. We have been on many cruises on many thips and so we have an idea of what it's like. We've been on thom large thips but not like the mega thips that they have today. Our favorite so far are the Cunard Queens. I don't know if the Smithsonian has done a review of them. If they do, I just hope they'll find someone who can say the word "ship" since the show is about "ships."
Crossfire (2022)
I almost liked it
I found it hard to like some of the main characters- they were either cheaters or cowards. It was suspenseful, but some of the stupid situations were irksome. For example, the two young kids Ben was supposed to be watching. He turned his back for a minute and they manage to disappear in empty terrain- completely impossible. But they did. And then when a girl goes to look for them it seems like there is a village about 25 feet from the resort where they could have gone for help. Right. Ben's death at the end was so predictable and downright silly with him not being able to follow a simple direction to get out of the way.
Let Them All Talk (2020)
Mixed feelings
I love the QM2. Have been on many crossings (in fact was on one right before they filmed this!)so it was fun to see the ship, but I too didn't like the improv feel. Even geniuses like these three actresses seemed a little awkward. Really, Meryl seemed the most ill at ease which was surprising. Diane is always a little awkward so seemed natural to her. And Candice was the best of the three, but the worst was Lucas Hedges. He seemed so anxious to appear natural that it was a very "forced" performance. Really annoying to watch.
The Stand (2020)
What's with the jumbled timeline?
What is this new trend (Greta Gerwig's "Little Women"- atrocious) to jumble the timeline? This skips around so much that if I hadn't read the book a million times I'd have no idea what was going on. Didn't it occur to the writers that Stephen King wrote the story in a certain order to build suspense and the story line and the character development and the relationships for a darn good reason? They've lost all the magic that made this story so popular.
Lark Rise to Candleford (2008)
Annoying whispering.
I love this series. Honestly. But Dorcas's constant whispering is so annoying. She never speaks above a whisper. It's so affected. Nitpicking I know.
The Bench (2001)
Out of order
I watched this on Amazon Prime and all the episodes were out of order. It was really confusing. Amazon needs to fix that. Even when I went to the individual list of episodes there was no way to figure out the proper order.
Having said that, apart from the Des character, I really enjoyed the series. He was a misogynist pig, I don't like the actor, and even though times have changed, it seemed unrealistic that anyone would put up with him. The other thing I found hard to believe is that while waiting for their hearings, people were subjected to Threats from other people. The court didn't protect witnesses at all. I can't believe how criminals were allowed to roam free and attack and intimidate witnesses. Hard to believe that would happen in a real magistrate court.
Little Women (2019)
Discombobulated
I could have loved this version but the editing is awful. I guess it's the editing. SPOILER ALERT: The movie starts with Jo in the boarding house with Prof. Baer. You can immediately tell there is a potential for a relationship there so that when they flashback to Laurie you already can guess that's not going to work. I mean I've seen all the versions and read the book ten times and even I was confused with the back and forth. I took my 9 and 10 year old granddaughters and they had to constantly ask "is this the present or past." What's wrong with just following the book and filming in the right time sequence of events? And it especially didn't work because the actors were the same whether they were 14 or 20 so that didn't give you a hint. Just a disappointing version.
A Christmas Carol (2019)
Bad bad adaptation
Classics become classic for a reason. The changes they made to this story make this unpalatable despite excellent acting. SPOILER ALERT: making young Scrooge a victim of child molestation and older Scrooge forcing Mrs. Cratchit to offer herself to him and actually strip, is just pandering to today's headlines. Heck, the Muppets version is truer to the original. Be sure not to let your kids watch this one.
