Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Really about a 7 or 8 but Giving it a 10 Because of the Idiots Giving it a 1
I was 18 in 1984 when the original Terminator came out and I remember running out of the theater with my best friend and we were running through the parking lot geeked at what we had just experienced. Dark Fate did not start slow and only have action scenes in the last 30 minutes as some idiots on here are posting. It was in fact non stop action. And the effects stood up with time. It was a good movie and the reason I give it a 7 or 8 was because CGI in but a few spots was too CGI. But most 98% was very good. The writing, especially with choices made with Arnold and Linda were reminiscent of the original and it was sad to see Arnold has aged. How fast time flies. I'm 53 now and everything has passed so quickly. Saw it tonight in Dolby Theater and reclining seats. Really not a bad flick. Nothing can replace the experience of seeing the original in 1984. It was a freak of nature film at that time. Today's film has the better effects in spades obviously but a lot of films have upped the game with effects. Those giving it a 1 are fruitlessly and hopelessly curmudgeons who either have an issue with the heroine in this film being south of the border or are just plain trying to bring the film down by dishonest reviews.
The Last Czars (2019)
Hmm. A little history sprinkled in with a lot of choreographed scenes non historic.
Evil Rasputin. Choreograph scenes to steer the feelings about Rasputin as this evil genius. The Tsarina has a surprise for Nicholas after Nicholai is healed from afar, and he thinks it's sex or something else but is led into a room with Rasputin sitting in a chair and she walk behind his chair and puts a hand on Grigori's shoulder and says 'here is your surprise'. And the sexual connotation or bisrmirchment reeks in the scene. All of course made up. No one had a camera in the inner chambers of the Palace or recorded such nuanced and personal scenes. The aspersions every time a healing took place that there was some logical explanation, such as the Tsarina feeling calm around Rasputin and that caused the bleeding to stop in her son. The fact that Rasputin was known for healing animals long before he was known to have a healing touch with humans is ignored. But the fact of it is it is not a miracle. Energy is real and someone who has a close touch with energy can feel it flow through them. There is a natural healing energy around our planet and thousands of people know how to tap into that grid. It's part of our makeup. Again not magic, not miracle. It's a real phenomena that anyone can tap into. So yeah the plausible explanation is that Rasputin indeed had magnetism and healing ability because he was in sync with that natural energy. But the script writers and historians make up facts and propose ideas that are just much more far fetched than what the reality actually probably was. Coincidence dozens of times. That's a skeptic to the core with no understanding of energy. We have energy bodies. And physical bodies. The energy body rules the physical body. Talk to any Guru from India that is legit and you'll learn the real deal.
Anna (2019)
Jeez the stuffed shirts that don't have an ounce of patience
Chess plays a central role in this film and like a good chess match you watch with patience and are given a very cool plot that weaves an interesting story across your two hours well spent. If you lack patience and want stupidity go watch something that takes less thought. Spy games were no joke during the cold war and the techniques used in the film were real. The fighting scenes were highly unrealistic, but is any Bond fight scene realistic? Yeah, it does a little John Wick, but that's top keep the ritalin crowd happy.
A Dog's Journey (2019)
Just saw it and loved it
Saw the film with my wife and 13 year daughter this evening and loved the film. We all three had some tears at various points in the story. Just made me want to hug my family. Great story, good acting, well done. Thank you to the producers, writers and everyone else involved. Might just go read the book now.
Life Itself (2018)
C'mon Guys
Beautifully put together film, superb acting, editing. The low reviews are shocking but yet again not. People. Didn't read the book, if there is a book. Don't need to do a mental comparison or have some expectation. Went in blank sheet and wife and daughter came out hugging after all three of us had our moments of reflection and tears during and after the film. You need to savor this film. Of course you'll figure out what you think is going to happen and that's okay. That's life. Life has its patterns and surprise moments that do indeed happen. It could happen and it does happen. Enjoy the film if you are an emotional person, a deeper person. C'est la vie... Just let go and enjoy the film.
Phenomenon (1996)
Great Movie
Watched again and cried again. Been years since I last saw it but tonight was able to show it for the first time to my ten year old daughter. The message in this film was palpable. We are much more than we are showing so far as a human race. And human connection transcends most almost anything else in this physical dimension. Up there with Shawshank. Travolta and cast were excellent. I can't believe only a 6.4. Some say it was too much information in the ending. As if it could have been told any other way. Some are hung up on the telekinesis as if it were a castigation on humanity. What it displayed to me the untapped and unknown potential. If you have a problem with it then think of it metaphorically at least, the great potential. Spoiler alert...Just rang true with the humanity from the buying of the chairs to the bar scene at the end of the film.
Jurassic World (2015)
Don't discount the fantastic and fantasy because unrealistic
I wouldn't exactly expect a Velociraptor to learn to react or trust a human similar to lets say a dog but dispensing with this disbelief Jurassic Park World is everything the others could not be, primarily due to the advance in capability with CGI. But so many are detracting due to the ability of the raptor / human relationship let's examine that a little further. It is unfair to say that raptors are dumb or smart, how do we truly know. All Jurassic film's have all capitalized on the notion that they can coordinate their attacks, like pack animals, life wolves. Raptors lean more towards being Edison in the films; they ain't exactly Dan Quayle. Back to reality, raptors would have acted mainly through "instinct". Whether or not in reality if raptors could be perceptive of their environment, I don't think science or paleontology will ever know. To parlay into today's world, not Jurassic World, a lot of snakekeepers say when they go to their rattlesnakes, the snakes act calm and normal. But when other people try to approach them, they rattle vigorously and take defensive poses. Although it's nice to think that snakes have emotions (like joy, anger, and affection), scientific studies show that snakes just don't have the cerebral capacity for them. However, snakes do have "primitive" feelings like aggression, fear, and pleasure. Snakes are able to learn simple things such as tolerating handling, eating an unnatural food item, and of course, adapting to captivity. But to teach a snake to learn things like to "fetch" (like a dog can), or "sit-stay" is not relevant to snakes. So the jump in disbelief is when just that proffered with raptors in Jurassic World. Get beyond that and the movie is a rip roaring affair. Lining up the 4 Jurassic film this one stands heads above the others as far as wow factor from a pure dinosaur perspective. Not to discount the first three films. This one had humor, solid acting and a Mosasaur. That Mosasaur almost steals the show and plays a few key scenes in the film and is satisfying in a sort of mixed feeling way. Same mixed feeling for the raptors and T-Rex. Do you root for Godzilla when a common foe appears? Enjoy the film for what it brings, unapologizing freaky experience with the largest creatures known to have walked this planet. You could say, could happen, could happen, could happen, probably couldn't happen, could happen and walk away laughing at some poignant human interaction that makes fun of clichés and a rousing, blood pumping reptilian romp through Isla Nublar, this scary and wondrous tropical island isolated somewhere in a Central American locale.
