Out of Darkness (2022)
Stone Age War movie, IT IS NOT HORROR
First off this is labeled a horror, thriller. It is neither of those! I was expecting a real demon, or monster or at least some creature maybe common at the time but long since extent. Nope! Just 2 type of early humans fighting for land, resources. And that is it. Not done well at that either. I HATE it when movies deceive you. If I wanted to see a movie about early man in the stone age then this would not be so bad. Although it does have some serious plot holes as others would point out. But to make me think it is horror when it is not is just wrong! And to try to make it seem like there was some creature and to find out it is just other people was a serious let down, made the whole movie a waste. If you are looking for a horror film please pass!
The Bear (2022)
Just plain boring!
As a few others stated it is just a bunch of meaningless day to day events, nothing really happens. The characters are whiny and dull and you do not really care about any of them.
Reminds me of shows I seen from the 80s with the little family business trying to stay afloat in the old neighborhood with lots of people of color working there. Done 30 yrs ago and better! Other than really small towns, corporations won that fight. You only see real small businesses in the USA in places where economically corporations do not see value in being there.
I guess if someone has never been to the USA and finds seeing it interesting this might be worth a watch. But I would suggest something else.
Sister Boniface Mysteries (2022)
Even after 2 seasons just plain dull!
I have been a big fan of Father Brown for years so glad it is still going. Was interested in a Nun show solving mysteries. Season 1 as not only boring but dull and the plots were almost at a child level. And the Nun is annoying and just not very good actress or at least in this role she sucks.
It is hard for a new show so I watched S2 hoping it would be better. Nope!
And yes having the Caribbean officer does seem just tossed in, but none of the characters have any sort of backstory. I mean how did the nun get so involved in police work?
One aspect of Father Brown that works is how much the police DO NOT want him interfering in the cases as the various inspectors always make clear! That conflict makes it more believable and also adds a bit of jest. Here the police just let her do everything and also I do not like how so many times the other nuns are shown but then the religious aspect is never a part of her actions. Which once again is something FB does well but is totally failing here.
Do not think it will improve so doubt I would bother with a S3.
The Strays (2023)
She is crazy and so are her kids!
First off I am a light skinned, although not white looking as the main character, black woman. That said in the US society yes the goal is always to be white in physically if you can and either way culture yes. I had many black men, and their families dislike me mainly as my goal was not to have, and be in white US society. That said I do not feel UK has this so much, I live in mainland Europe. There is no reason to act like the woman did on this film, she is both selfish and a psychopath! The race aspect is really not the big thing, she hates herself for being black due to she is crazy! Her black kids unfortunately as a different review stated, they also inherited some of her mental illness and maybe the violence of their dad and also trauma from her abandoning them and growing up in a bad situation. But that said they are also nuts! No reason to act like that did!
Ending was good and I admit unexpected. It was good as it shows that it was never about race with her, she is a bad vain person. Marrying a well to do man was the point and when that was not easy she left that life just like she did before. As clearly she wanted a wealthy man, he just happened to be white. If she met a poor white man I do not think she would of treated him good, and if she met a rich black man she would of still acted the same.
Not great and could of been a bit better, but still I would say give it a go.
Venus (2022)
Dull and then gets worse!
FIrst off I would NOT call this horror, more a crime film that tries for something more. One scene that did not fit in or even seem real does not make horror. So be warned. I was at the 45 min mark and nothing horror at all happened and was going to turn it off, nope sat threw the next hour. Should of stopped then. You are supposed to feel sorry for a sex worker that tries to rip off some drug dealers, nope sorry I did not! As a woman I am tired of having sex workers that are also criminals depicted as kind, caring women. I missed meals and was homeless due to NOT being a sex worker or criminal so sorry there is never a reason to be of low morals. But on top of that the movie is very man hating also. But the biggest issue I had was simply a dumb pointless plot where nothing is really explained and nothing happens! The building was cursed? There was a solar event meaning what? Some she demon was going to rise? Ok but none of that happens!
As I said dull and then just gets worse!
The Confessions of Frannie Langton (2022)
I am a black woman and I was not that fond of it
The sets and costumes were good I will say. But I did not like the actress playing Frannie. Maybe it was correct in line with the book, I do not know as I have not read the book. But from the start she was not likeable! Very holier than thou and did not get my desire to help her. She even was not trying to let friends, the lawyer help her when they tried. The mistress was spoiled and selfish in my view and I am not surprised was not going to have a lesbian relationship, mixed child etc with her. But I do not blame her as this is something only an option to women in the very very recent years.
Frannie should of been and was aware of the political times, and tried to do her best to live. I know we want to be living a certain way but you can not help when you are born.
I do understand the cruelty she experienced and that lead to some of her actions there in England. But murder is not the answer! Especially even with that confession she admits she was not honest with that.
As I said I am a black woman from the USA, and I have had some very awful things happen to me. Really awful including attempted murder on me. And I got zero justice even when the cops put a case for that, the judge, legal system felt my bf was "stressed and felt to try to kill me was his only option" this was in 2005. So things are not that in improved at least in the USA. I do feel in UK they have improved though. My point is even when told and given the chance to seek revenge I did NOT. As even though I was greatly hurt, me hurting was not the correct answer.
No one would excuse me for deeply hurting someone that hurt me directly and I would be ashamed if I did. So no sorry I can not feel for her in this situation!
That said I was hoping for a more interesting ending! Like it would turn out to NOT be her, like someone else framing her or something. But nope was not. Was a bit hmm not that great.
The Sixth Secret (2022)
I agree with the high reviews!
I admit I started this with my husband. He is Swedish and since this is Estonian and listed as "horror" the thought it might be good. As he has been to Estonia and also loves horror, as both are true of me! But it is set in England in the 1930s and that Agatha C type of style which totally turned him off! So we turned it off. BUT I love that style and era so I went back to watch it myself and I am glad I did!
Yes clearly it is based on a play or was a play before being a film, and yes they did not have a ton of money, although I feel they did well. And the actors are speaking English even though several are not native English speakers, but I really really enjoyed it. Well written and yes you do have to pay attention especially the 2nd half.
And yes as others said I had to go back and watch the first few mins again after seeing the very very end to get it. So watch till the first credits!
Only thing I will say was a bit not well done is a few of the characters in the beginning, (the blonde, the daredevil, the married couple and I guess that one was a cross dressing man? Did the blonde start a relationship with the man that dressed like a woman?) Added nothing and were just and not needed. I was thinking one of them would come back later to be part of the schemes or something. But once they were gone they were gone and had nothing to do with the overall plot. Would of enjoyed having one of them be a part of things. But then again that made it better that some of the people one thinks were part of the schemes were not and simply had their own life situations!
I would suggest this but as if you like this type of film then you will enjoy it. But do not go into it thinking it is Horror or Comedy as it was listed where I watched it. Really more a period piece, retro mystery.
The Gray Man (2022)
We all need a paycheck!
Very played plot that we have all seen 200 million times, ie the budget. Nothing new added at all. Both the lead actors look good, although did not give a very convincing performance of CIA top agents. Course they fit the mode of CIA agents, not very intelligent just skilled at guns. And no stealth at all! It was accurate though at you go too or live in the locations where most of the action was, Wien, Budapest, Croatia, Czechia it is very very very much USA influenced and the part of the EU the USA does much dirty work as they are weak countries. It would not even be believing in a film to have them in Nordic countries, France, Germany etc as they do not cater to the USA. So that worked.
The women in the film really were just cardboard and added nothing. Sorry that woman from this and the Bond movie does not have much talent although she seems to be popular now. Not sure why they always use such small women in action films? I guess due to many actors are kinda short also?
Enjoyable to just pass the time but nothing interesting. Could of been better but no it is NOT a Bondish film, NOT Bourne, or as good as a South African film I saw with much much less budget.
The actors tried I think the real issue as others said is the writing, just was tired. But as I said we all need a paycheck and I am sure they got a nice one!
Wayward (2022)
Untypical!
Really enjoyed this! The twists and turns are good and I really was not sure what was going on or how this would end. Which is a good thing in thriller! Also good to see black people cast in a different light. Highly recommend this!
Death in Paradise: Undercover and Out (2022)
Honestly glad she is gone, Again!
DS Cassell leaving a 2nd time? It was never clear to me why she left before and came back and now she leaves again only 4 ep in? Must be something with her, or her contract. I do not know but it is honestly taking away from the show. Plus she really seemed to NOT enjoy being on the show this season, really frown on her face all the time. So I hope she does not come back again as it would be better to have a new person.
Also I understand her and Neville would not work out as they work together so romance is not realistic. But I would of thought it interesting to have him meet a local woman ie a woman of color, and start a relationship then have Cassell get jealous! He hee. But either way would be cool if he still met a local woman.
The Real Housewives of Dubai (2022)
Dubai is an expat city!
Really enjoyed this, ok there has only been one ep but it was very fun! No it is not realistic but hmm which of the shows anywhere in the world it totally realistic? If you want a cultural documentary then you should not look to these shows anyway! But does this reflect wealthy of Dubai yes it does. Sorry if you do not realize that but it is true! Also I enjoy seeing black women from various backgrounds along with other nationalities of women. That made this both interesting and entertaining to me as an American black woman living outside of my birth nation and married to an European. I will be watching all of this!
The Courtship (2022)
From all over the Globe? Nope just US really!
I was really interested in this show as the setting and idea seemed so interesting! I thought it would show an American woman, especially a black women seeking out love where ever it may be. And in the first few mins the host who is British states there would be men from all over the globe! I thought ok cool. Then out of 16 guys there is only 3 not from the USA? Just one Canadian, 1 UK guy and one from South Korea! Really! Was done then. And the South Korean guy most likely has lived in the US as there is much US military there, and well Canada is very near Seattle where she is from. So really just 1 guy that is really non USA centric. Real let down. I felt it was almost biased in the fact that it implies that a black American woman is not desirable to non American men. I am a black American woman married to a Swedish guy and living in Sweden, he was watching this with me thinking we would see some diversity but was let down also.
