Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez (2020)
Interesting but too long
A good documentary overall but not great. I was really excited about this documentary when I heard about it. I liked it overall though I felt that it added very little to what was already known about Aaron Hernandez overall. Moreover, I felt that it started to go down a path of political correctness wherein it was starting to imply that repeat concussions as seen with contact sports like football were the root cause to his bad behavior and demise-fortunately though somewhat confusingly, it seemed to back-peddle on this issue towards the end. I felt that there was more that could have been said about the system in our society that fosters, cultivates, praises and protects superstar athletes till an atrocity takes place and it no longer can. There was more substance to the story that I felt the director could have delved into that was not presented. Ultimately, what we were left with was a very long and repetitive presentation of a very disturbed and ill young man who wasted his potential.
Cats (2019)
Spectacularly bad
There is no other movie I have seen in the last decade that achieves the level of greatness as a bad movie as does Cats (though Jack and Jill is not that far behind followed perhaps by Jupiter Ascending). What makes Cats so impressively bad is that it is clear that it was produced with tremendous effort and sincerity and hopelessly wastes the talents of so many talented people. I would love to say that it becomes a guilty pleasure and is an enjoyably bad film up there with Flash Gordon and Night of the Lepus but the disturbing humanization of the cat characters goes way off-kilter and results in something that is more like fetish porn than being a tribute to the wonderful stage play Cats was back in the 80s. I have seen it on stage and loved it-frankly, I really wanted to love Cats the movie. But I hated it and burst out laughing several times at the absurdities I was watching (for example the scene on the railroad tracks where some sort of Freddie Mercury cat had a dance and song...WTF?). Idris Elba, please do another season/series of Luther. Judi Dench, Ian McKellen,
please do anything else...maybe a remake of Plan 9 from Outer Space. I cannot unsee it! The Razzies should be fun this year! I suspect a sweep may take place...like with Jack and Jill.
