Atypical (2017)
An Autistic Dramedy and a Coming-of-Age Tale
Really good show. Every acting on this show feels real. The only actor I am actually familiar with among the lineup is the father. Basically, the show is about an 18-year old high school senior who has high-functioning autism and how his dynamic changes between him and his family as he decides he is ready to start dating and have sex. What goes on after that is a whirlwind of emotions between each member of the family. If you enjoy quirky, yet serious dramedies and coming-of-age tales, this will suit you well. The season has been picked up for a 10-episode second season being renewed next year. I'm interested in how this will turn up.
Big Mouth (2017)
Disgusting, Yet Enjoyable
This show is NOT for anyone under 18, despite being a sitcom about seventh graders. Everything in this show revolves around sex. Everything. There's an episode which a pillow gets pregnant. There's another episode where one of the main characters talks to her vagina. Extremely vulgar. In fact, the last episode of the season kind of sums it best, when they say that this show is about teenagers masturbating, and that the only way they can get away with it is if it were animation. The hormone monsters two of the main characters have are the excuse for their kind of behavior. So, why I'm I rating this seven stars and not something much lower? The stories are interesting, it is generally funny and I do laugh out loud usually once or twice per episode. This show won't be for everybody, even if you are over 18. If you have thin skin I suggest looking someplace else for your entertainment. For the rest of us - enjoy!
Family Guy: Emmy-Winning Episode (2017)
Uuuhh ... what?
There have been episodes which the family were self-aware of being 'Family Guy'. This kind of takes it to a whole new level. I did chuckle a few times but there have been far more funnier episodes than this.
Oddly enough they seem to take a job not only at Hollywood and the Emmy's but also their liberal portrayals. It was odd seeing Seth MacFarlane, a renounced liberal Hollywood snob as they come, take a jabat an even larger establishment he apparently isn't apart of. I'm notknocking it down for that however. It mostly has to do with the factthat I feel like in a much larger sense the show and its creations havebecome too involved and self-aware of their actions ... when in thebeginning it was the opposite.
The jokes were a hit and miss. Sometimes they seemed to do things for the shock value, as they always do, but rarely do they try anything truly intelligent or witty. One of the earliest jokes in this episode revolves around the gag of everybody throwing up. And the breaking part of the episode just has Peter on a computer researching Emmy winners. Too many celebrity cameos that appeared for no real reason. Family Guy knows they won't win an Emmy ... but they had to remind everybody when they shouldn't.
The Big Bang Theory: The Retraction Reaction (2017)
The Power of Doubt
This episode seemed to revolve around doubt. Leonard doubted his career and physics at Cal Tech publicly on radio. The majority of the rest of the episode deals with him trying to save his job - and the donation money that would be lost if he didn't write an apology. The situation leads to Sheldon to also doubt physics too. Bernadette and Amy brag to each other about their professions, to a fault. The episode gets better the later on it goes, but I didn't see the need to go to a cemetery, if only for a deceased physicist. Still, good episode. Great job by cast and crew.
Shark Tank: Episode #9.1 (2017)
Something's Missing...
Where's Kevin O'Leary? He's been temporarily filled in with a guest shark. Good episode. The products that deserved to be invested got invested in, and the other one, the last service, wasn't anything worth looking at. They have a new set, and they do a brief segment to talk about the guest shark. It wasn't one of those episodes which everything is rejected. Deals were made in this episode.
South Park: Holiday Special (2017)
A Mock on DNA Testing
While I do not completely understand why they picked Columbus, besides Columbus Day, I did appreciate the episode for what it really was. That is, a total rip on DNA testing and placing the victim card where it ought not to be. There were two moments in the episode that made me laugh out loud. I do think they were trying to go for how it isn't cool to be confederate but Columbus wasn't really around when that happened. I felt like the romantic interest the native American had was a bit unwarranted. Still, a good episode regardless. I kind of wondered where they were going until I saw the DNA testing ad. I would watch this again if given a chance.
