Monarca (2019–2021)

A taste of Mexican reality

This series gives you an inside look of what it is like to be living in Mexico. Not just about the prevalence of corruption, but about homosexuality, social/economic classes, reputation and narcos.

While the country has made the transition smoothly into modern times in many things, traditional conservative values still have a strong hold on many of its people today and the series does a good job of portraying that.

Homosexuality can still be very taboo for many even though mainstream media is open and accepting about it. The gap between the rich and the poor is pretty wide and these two opposing classes do avoid and hardly interact with each other. Not to say there isn't exceptions but what you see in this series does still happen everyday and is more common than what others think. I know because I am Mexican. I may have been born and raised stateside but i have plenty of family still living in Mexico, have visited and spent many summers there to know these things are very much real.

The series has a great production behind it and wonderful cinematography. Loved the scenery that was shot. There may be some predictable story lines but the show is still very good. it leaves you wanting more. Hurry up Season 2!

It Chapter Two (2019)

Beep Beep chapter 2!

No movie will ever recreate what a book does. No movie will ever include everything that is in the book. What it will do is make changes and only add what they deem is important.

As much as my childhood nostalgia makes me like the 1990 version of IT, I can still admit it wasn't that good, it was too watered down. But Pennywise was great. I still find him creepy. IT chapter 1 came around and is better. At least in terms of the story it told. More from the book was included and that is always welcome. Even the changes were good and the comedic lines and personalities of the Losers gave it its own flavor. Skarsgard made Pennywise his own and did a great job. Overuse of CGI is what ruined the horror/creepy factor in certain scenes of Chapter 1 and there was certainly no exception for chapter 2.

Chapter 2 had great buildups that fell flat because of CGI. They tried to recreate what they did in Chapter 1 with the characters as kids, especially Eddie. It felt forced and a little too much comedy for a horror film. Many people dislike the length of the film and think they spent too much time on getting the viewer reacquainted with each character. I disagree, being a fan of the book, I was engulfed with their stories.

Overall IT Chapter 2 is alright and it's a movie I will see again in the future eventually. Pennywise makes more appearances which is good but it is not better than Chapter 1. You can thank the extra comedy and overuse of CGI for that.

Don't Let Go (2019)

Modern "Frequency"

I watched this movie when it was still under the title of "Relive". A cop learns his niece and her parents are killed. He soon starts receiving phone calls from his dead niece. Is it her ghost calling from the other side? No, it's her calling from the past, two weeks before her and her family are killed. The cop then tries to prevent their murder.

This movie is a revisited, modern version of the movie "Frequency" (2000) starring Jim Caviezel and Dennis Quaid. Instead of a father and son duo connecting through time, it's now an uncle and niece. A cell phone in place of a ham radio for communication among other differences. I'm not gonna reveal more on the movie to not spoil it.

Is the movie good? I think so. Are there better movies out there? Absolutely and definitely worse ones. I just dont think it's worth paying the price of a movie theatre ticket to watch this. You can stay in more comfortable at home and make it a movie night. Pay way less to stream the original and other movies with the money you saved on the ticket in any of the innumerable streaming services available.

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (2019)

Feet feet feeet!

YES. I'm a Tarantino fan. Love most of his movies and really like the rest. Even that tiny story in Four rooms. This movie, I only like.

Anyone who knows a bit about Tarantino knows he has a foot fetish. Feet are an important part of his films but this time it looks like he took an excerpt from Dr. Seuss's " The Foot Book". I'm sure that's in his book collection NOT collecting dust.

Besides the feet, this movie is on a slow slow cooker. Tarantino loves giving his characters plenty of dialogue so you can fully get to know them. To many people this will be a complete bore. I like his style of letting the viewer know the characters in a movie but a couple of times I went ok... let's move on. The movie takes place obviously in Hollywood, in the year 1969. I love 60s culture and music so I enjoyed watching it. I immersed myself in the movie and felt like I was actually watching a recording of people in 1969. I think he did a great job of capturing that time period.

There are some funny moments in the movie but the ending is absolutely the best. I loved it. This is another one of those I-wished-this-happened-instead movies. I will be definitely watching this movie again but when I am able to fast forward certain parts. It's a good movie. I'm glad I watched it all the way through but I won't watch all of it again. It was a tad bit too long for my taste. It doesn't take away how great the actors were or how it was filmed and how he captures that year. Still liked the movie overall but loved the ending.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

**If you haven't read the books, you're better off not seeing it or you most likely won't like it**

This movie is based off children's books that were published in 1981, 1984 and 1991. Most of the audience this movie will garner will be from people who read these books when they were kids. Hardcore horror fans will PROBABLY not like it. You will not be scared except MAYBE with the jump scares.

I'm sure kids will love it, just be mindful of the age your kids are and how they handle horror. This isn't like goosebumps. People who scare easily will like it too.

They did a wonderful job getting the "scary" characters to look exactly how they were illustrated. In the books none of the stories are connected. Here, a main story was created to connect them. It's actually not that bad. It's scarier and less cheesy than what passes as children's horror but it's not like what adults expect. An in-between horror film with some good, CREEPY and FUNNY moments. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it but sheer childhood nostalgia drove me to go see it.

Always Be My Maybe (2019)

Cute lighthearted rom com

If you are looking for an overly romantic movie then stop and dont watch it. This is not "The Notebook" type of movie with big displays of love and affection.

I think that's the good thing about this movie. It's more down to earth and what I think to be more believable to how most relationships are. Not that there isn't any relationships where you can experience great romance and incredible, once in a lifetime things happen. But reality is most relationships aren't like that. The romance is more subtle, there will be awkward moments you will argue, get jealous and actually hurt people you like/love with things you said.

This movie doesnt have a plot that is aiming for an academy award. It's simply a funny rom-com about two childhood friends who lost touch and found each other again 16 years later. which I personally found cute, laughed watching it and took my mind off things. If you like romantic comedies, I think you should give this one a try. If you don't like it, simply take it off and onto the next movie. That's the beauty of the film industry, so many movies to fit everyone's different tastes.

Oh yeah, I before I forget.... loved seeing Keanu Reeves acting like the total opposite of how many people say he really is.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

The nightmare of the original Nightmare

First things first.... YES, I have seen the original 1984 version and I love it (not the sequels) considering it's old and some special effects are laughable.

Now that, THAT is out of the way. I must admit I was a little upset a remake was being made. With all the remakes of movies being made left and right and most of them being made poorly, I refused to see this movie. After 9 years I found it on my prime subscription and with nothing to do I took a deep breath and pressed play.

I missed nothing avoiding it for 9 years and could've easily done without ever watching it. I'll give it to them trying to explain more about Freddy's origins but I don't know, I guess the way the whole movie was executed, it turned out to be a complete dud, for me. Considering this version is modern and Hollywood has better special effects, It still didnt do the job of creeping me out the way the original did. I found myself rolling my eyes and shaking my head throughout the whole film.

Some may say I'm biased because I viewed and enjoyed the original. Maybe I am, but this is my review and I am giving my honest opinion on it and we are all entitled to it. I didn't like it, not one bit. Watch the original instead.

The Act (2019)

Scary to think these things do happen.

I stumbled upon this mini series because it was recommended to me. I didnt bother reading the synopsis, I just pressed play. I knew absolutely nothing about this being a real case. Upon seeing in the credits it was based on true events, it peaked my interest more.

My God! Within a minute of the first episode I was filled with a sense of dread. I immediately knew this was going to be a good series. The actors made me feel many emotions towards them. Everyone was terrific in their performances. Many times I wished I could slap the mother through my TV.

After finishing this I was still interested in knowing more about the case. I went online to research and even watched a documentary about it. It is scary to think that sometimes you aren't even safe with your own mother. You cross paths with people and never know what could be happening to them behind closed doors. As you can imagine, I definitely recommend you watch this.

The Upside (2017)

There will always be remakes

This is a remake of the 2011 French film, "The Intouchables". Being a remake it is bound to not be exactly the same as the original and there will be changes, add ons or takeaways but the story remains almost the same.

With that in mind I watched this movie pretending it was a film all on it's own. I enjoyed it and liked the performances. This is first time I (personally) see Kevin Hart act more serious in a role and he did a good job. Bryan Cranston was superb as always.

Many people dislike this movie because they viewed the original and in my opinion, the original is way better. But let's be fair, that doesn't mean this movie is garbage. I think everyone did a great job, the movie was good and it delivered the same message the original did. It's just up to you whether you want to watch the original or this one instead.

Suspiria (I) (2018)

Yawn...

Knowing the original film I was excited after watching the trailer thinking it was going to be a decent remake. Maybe I should've informed myself on the movie prior to watching it because I still don't know if it's a remake or something branching off the original. At this point I won't bother figuring that out.

Witches running a dance academy seems to be the only thing the 1977 and 2018 version have in common. Maybe there's more things they have in common but I would catch myself nodding off. Some people are saying if you enjoyed "The Shining" you will enjoy this movie. I'm sorry, but NO. The shining actually kept me intrigued and creeped out. This movie made me want to fall asleep. Variety is the spice of life and some will like it and others wont. I'm part of the latter group. A complete and utter bore, for me anyway.

Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

Great show ruined by last season

This show required you to pay close attention at first because there are so many characters but it WAS worth it. Great storylines, acting, beautiful cinematography, you name it. All that greatness came crumbling down just like a tower of Jenga. Seasons 1-6 were great. Season 7 was the beginning of the deterioration but was still a tad palatable. Season 8? I think just canceling the show and leaving it at a cliffhanger wouldve been an easier pill to swallow than what we got.
