The Adventures of Pete & Pete: What We Did on Our Summer Vacation
End of the Summer
This is one of the many greats in the series. It does a phenomenal job of tackling how we all feel about the end of summer and the nostalgia for the ones of our youth. I also love that Michael Stipe from REM and Kate Pierson from the B-52s have parts in the one. My favorite REM song is "Me in Honey" which features Kate. Cool that they worked on the same episode together!
Anyway, here I am 32 years after this episode aired writing about it and remembering back when I was going into the 2nd grade. My best friend and I would spend the summers building forts in his ravine, hanging out at the swimming pool and, of course, waiting for the ice cream man. I'm at the end of the last summer of my 30s and find myself still going back to this series multiple times a year to recapture those feelings I had growing up. I wanted to come here and leave this for all the Pete and Pete fans but also in case my son ever stumbles upon this I want him to know that I hope he has those great summers every year and shares my love for this wonderful show.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Beautiful & Unexpected
I've never played the games, I've been watching each night when episodes release and have been enjoying myself but nothing has really stuck out as completely original to me. I've been reminded of the obvious comparisons like I Am Legend and The Walking Dead. This episode came out of left field for me and really elevated this series. I know it's still early on but I was blown away by this episode and am even more excited for the future episodes because of it. So much heart, such a great thesis on why we would want to survive through something like this in the first place. If love makes you feel uncomfortable, then you probably won't allow yourself to be moved by what has been given to us here but to the rest of us, what a treat in cinema.
The Rehearsal: Orange Juice, No Pulp (2022)
Nathan For You 2.0
Ok, what is the budget like for these episodes?? I'm so happy Nathan Fielder is back and somehow upping his game beyond Nathan For You! I was in tears more than once watching this and cannot wait for more episodes!
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part VI (2022)
What was the Point?
What were the stakes? None, literally no important character could die or end up in any condition worse than where they started here. What was the point? The story was weak. The music was awful. Think about how much more powerful so many of these scenes could have been if they had cued up those haunting and beautiful themes we all know?? I do not have a problem with Reva, I was surprised where her story went and I really don't have any gripes with any of the acting. It was nice to hear James Earl Jones doing great voice acting but don't you feel like Hayden Christensen was wasted for this? He was used in marketing and only really appeared in a flashback and a mirage? The last two episodes were okay but it's my opinion that this was mediocre at best and is such a disappoint.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part IV (2022)
Another Giant Miss
I can't believe this is happening. Ewan McGregor came back to this role for this? The writing is so bad, I care nothing for any character or plot happening. Reva's lines are laughably bad and it has nothing to do with race or gender. This person cannot act in this role. The music is such a let down. You have access to Williams' orignal score for these characters. The iconic music made for them, it isn't being used and what is in its place is bad cover music for a fan film flop of a series. I am in awe that any of this was deemed worthy to be made.
Stranger Things: Chapter One: The Hellfire Club (2022)
Disney Could Learn a Few Things From This
After feeling a bit bored by most of Season 3 I went into this episode without a lot of interest but it successfully got me excited for the rest of the season! I have been feeling the burnout with most of the Disney+ shows like Moon Knight, Book of Boba Fett and now Obi Wan. They're stale and seem to be following a very tired model. I know that Stranger Things has the same nostalgia, throwback, homage thing going for it but these show runners have figured out a way to do it that doesn't feel as forced IMO. Happy that Netflix hasn't been shut out of the sci-fi genre!
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Pretty Big Let Down
Look if you are enjoying it so far, that is totally fine, I'm not here to tell anyone they are wrong for liking this. Ewan McGregor does a pretty good job but the rest of this is atrocious. Disney is having a real hard time getting action and chase scenes that feel like they have any stakes. The actor they have playing Reva is not up to snuff for something as big as this. The rooftop wire work for her in episode 2 is amateurish and should never have been approved for this series. This feels like a fan fiction tv show and it should be more cinematic. Disney has endless resources and there is not excuse for this poor quality show. It's a huge letdown. Wasn't even pumped or excited to see Vader.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 7: In the Name of Honor (2022)
Takes the Impact Out of The Mandalorian S2 Finale
I have to say that I have really been enjoying the past two episodes and I like that Grogu is given a choice at the end of the last episode. I think it was smart to reunite him with Mando especially because that gives us hope that he isn't a part of the slaughter brought on by Kylo Ren.
My biggest disappoint came with the actual reunion between Grogu and Mando. Their separation was so well done and so emotional that to have them put back together in what felt like such a rushed way really takes the wind out of the sails from that gut wrenching season 2 finale in The Mandalorian. It really felt like not enough time had passed and I would have enjoyed a season of the Mandalorian without Grogu and then maybe had a more impactful reunion later on.
