A Murder at the End of the World (2023)
Murder on The Icelandic Express?
This is my second attempt to watch this series. Will put it away for six months and try again. Love Emma Corrin and she is wonderful in this series. She does US American quite well. Clive Owen does not. Never has, never will. He ruined Sam Spade. It is just that this series hits all the au currant topics with the standard heroes and villains about whom you do not care, except Darby and Bill. It's a very bad Miss Marple story in the 21st Century. Plus, it is Iceland. I grew up in the MidWest in the 1950s. I know black and white movies, TV, and winters. Nobody in the 21st Century would accept a trip to Iceland in the Winter.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
It took 3 times to get into this adaptation
The "Turning of the Screw" is my favorite Henry James novel. It scared the crap out of me because it allows your imagination to run wild. This is why I love well written psychological horror.
I read it when I was ten. It was in the library of my school. Two years later, "The Innocents" movie was released. This movie still ranks in my top three of horror movies. Deborah Kerr was excellent. The atmosphere was creepy. It was frightening
Fast forward, decades later, dozens of adaptations have been released. Mostly abominable snooze fests.
Gave this one a try. Truth be told, it took three attempts. Could not get past Henry Thomas's constipated Prince Charles accent and Victoria Pedretti's typical over the top US girl.
The third time, I just hung in there. It was worth the wait. The second episode was so much better, and I was hooked.
This is NOT the Henry James novel, but you are so captured by the characters and their lives. Each episode is seen from another's perspective. I was captivated.
I love the creepy feelings you get from slow reveals. I don't require, nor desire jump scares. This series does the creepy slow.
Some of the accents are weird. Aside from Henry Thomas, there was the really brutal attack on the Scottish accent by Oliver Jackson-Cohen.
Overall, I give it a 9 out of 10. Loved the slow creep hated the bad accents. BTW, "The Innocents" is still #1. Bly Manor is #2 in adaptations of the novel.
Game of Silence (2016)
Watch "Sleepers" instead.
Imitation may be a form of flattery BUT it is no substitute for the original. If you haven't seen "Sleepers", please do. This rendition is just pablum. The original is a fine meal.
