Paper City (2021)
The crimes of Empire on full display
What a wonderful yet harrowing documentary. In the West we are taught unquestionably that the Allies cared for people and democracy. Yet the fire bombing of over 60 cities, including the 100,000+ killed in Tokyo says otherwise. It makes my blood boil knowing that it is totally forgotten or seen as justified that millions were to perish from incendiary and atomic bombs. Horrific war crimes that should never be forgotten. The Japanese empire, the US and the allies are all criminals and only concerned with their own power and domination. The rest of us left to suffer.
Yet survivors remain defiant, both to earn their deserved dignity, justice for those who did not survive and to do what they can to stop any one else ever experiencing such horror. We need more people like this in the world, prepared to fight injustice.
With America and China continually at each other's throats, I fear the crimes of empire will not go away. Like was lamented, the Middle East has experienced such horrors for the past 3 or so decades.
Thank you to the activists and film producers for cutting against the historical amnesia about this barbaric event, while displaying the courage and humanity of those who endured it.
The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006)
Historically accurate, politically great and cinematically powerful
Ken Loach does what he does best - give a dramatic cinematic experience, that combines his political worldview and historic accuracy into something that ticks all the boxes.
As a socialist as well, it's especially brilliant to see the portrayal of the two currents out of the Irish Independence Movement - a labor-oriented, socialist, revolutionary current and the bourgeois nationalist movement. The "family feud" isn't really a family feud at all but a debate between these two currents. We can see the today the result of this battle.
The scenery is beautiful, the costumes, and the brilliant acting performances only help create a more immersive story. There is depth in the characters, and the ability for them to be both opportunistic, principled and shift in their orientation to some of the main questions of the time.
Ken Loach has done a brilliant job in creating a historical work of art - his realism in his films is picture perfect in this film and really sets the bar for any future films covering the Irish Independence Movement.
Gods of Egypt (2016)
You'll need Horus' Eye to spot out the good parts
Super excited about this and really disappointed. Legit more of a laugh than anything else, which is its only entertaining factor to be honest. Shame they couldn't have done more with Egyptian Mythology which is friggin awesome. Also didn't know Egypt was located in Europe back when the Gods roamed, love the Scottish and Danish...keeping it multicultural, just every culture apart from the one your movie is about. Could've done better. The rest of this review is to reach the 10 line minimum, what's your deal IMDb? Didn't realize this was a written exam with a word limit, thought this was just a movie review. At least English class prepared me for this well. Yeah so I dunno, don't waste your money on this film, $18 could go to many other things.
