X-Men (2000)
Great Film!
I have seen this film so many times, and enjoy it time after time!
Even though this is an original story, separate to the comic books, I think it works well as the first instalment in this particular sequence of films.
The story begins with Rogue and Wolverine and takes them through their journey into the mutant world, and meeting the X-Men, Professor X and Magneto. It also focuses on the, at times, hostile Human interaction with the Mutant world, setting it up for later film (and comic) story lines.
Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen give strong performances throughout and considering the film is now coming up 14/15 years old, the special effects are pretty good!
Overall it is definitely worth a watch, especially for fans of the original Marvel comics (though I did enjoy X-Men 2 (X2) more!)
Centurion (2010)
Pleasantly Surprised!
After reading all the negative reviews, I wasn't expecting much from Centurion, when putting into the Blu Ray player at the weekend. I have to say, I was really pleasantly surprised. Based on the mystery of the disappearance of the 9th Legion who were said to have vanished without trace, during their invasion of Scotland in 108 AD, Centurion was an interesting and captivating watch. The film explores this legend and offers an explanation as to what could have happened . The storyline was good, the script strong and the performances were great. Not to mention the beautiful landscapes used in filming. The costume and sets appeared authentic too, but I am no expert by any means. If you go into this film with no expectations or judgements, and take the film for what it is, I think you can't help but enjoy it.
Arrested Development (2003)
Amazing - You have to watch this!!!
A friend introduced me to Arrested Development and I am eternally grateful as it is now one of my favourite TV shows of all time.
The show centres on a massively dysfunctional family and their eccentric, yet hilarious escapades. I love every character, which is a testament to the show, as there are usually characters I cannot stand! I just love love love Tobias, Buster and Gob!
I can understand why some people don't "get" the comedy of the show, but I think it is clever and brilliant!
With each episode at about 20 mins in length, it is easy to whiz through them!I've seen the show in it's entirety about 4-5 times. I cannot recommend it enough.
I so hope they get another series or two!
Jane Eyre (2011)
Atmospheric and Enjoyable!
As a massive fan of the whole Jane Eyre franchise, I have to say I was really disappointed when the cast list was first released. However, after watching it recently I was extremely presently surprised!
Mia plays an excellent Jane, I can understand why some people thought she gave a wooden performance but the character of Jane is not over-dramatic, her narrative in the book is full of passion and emotion, but outwardly, she is very subtle in these traits. Mia pulled it off in my opinion.
Michael Fassbender gave an excellent performance of Mr Rochester! He portrayed the complex character very well and had such a great on screen presence in this roll. Mr Rochester has always been my favourite fictional character, so I was really pleased with how Michael portrayed him. I also thought the casting of Mrs Fairfax (Judi Dench) was great too.
I did however feel that there wasn't as much chemistry between the characters as there should have been (compared with the books). I think individually they were great, but together there was something lacking. Never the less, I enjoyed the film so much and became utterly engrossed in the Jane Eyre world, the way I usually do when I read the book.
The atmosphere created by the sets, lighting and filming were superb! Very atmospheric and haunting! However, I wish that they had included more content featured in the trailer, in the finished film. I am glad for the deleted scenes on the DVD as they fill in some of the blanks, that those unfamiliar to Jane Eyre, would not be privy to. I am hoping that an extended version will be released at some point! If this was a TV series version, and was allowed to take place over 4 hours, it would be the best adaptation out there.
Spring Breakers (2012)
Awful, Disjointed and Pointless
The trailer is the best thing about this movie. It manages to make this film look as though it may be quite good.
Unfortunately the trailer lies! This film was utterly dreadful. I love arty, Indy films and this film tried to achieve that sort of status (with limited dialogue and intense scenes focusing on one object) but it just did not work. The result was a mess. The acting was horrendous, the script a joke but more importantly the end result was just bizarre!
We all actually burst out laughing at the "deep throat gun" and the "Britney Spears Tribute" scenes.
I have no idea why anyone would give this a good review, apart from if they wanted to perv on the cast members. I found the whole experience grotty and uncomfortable.
Hex (2004)
Had Potential but didn't Deliver
*** May Contain Spoilers***
Hex aired when I was at Uni and I caught the odd episode or so, but always wanted to watch the series in its entirety and chronologically. I finally watched the series recently and was really disappointed.
First of all, the first series should have been longer, to enable character development and relationship development. I feel we should have seen more of a development between Azazeal and Cassie and learnt more about their backgrounds. Their story seemed rushed to me. One minute she hated him, and once she had been possessed, she loved him. I didn't feel a real connection between the two characters. I feel as though we should have seen their relationship progressing. I felt like their relationship was lacking in on screen content but their relationship did have potential.
The Rachael McBain story wasn't really explored either. She appeared in one or two episodes in dreams etc but it was left at that. It would have been good to see her relationship with Azazeal and more about his motivations etc, as well as how Rachael and her daughter met their ends.
I found Cassie to be very annoying, but again I think this could have been down to how she was portrayed on screen. The Azazeal character was very strong, I feel he should have been a bit more of a main focus on the show, not just appearing every now and again.
Then there is the script! The dialogue, in parts, was terrible and verging on amateur. The story lines themselves didn't really possess any real continuity, especially from series 1 to series 2. It just lost focus.
Towards the end of series 2, they had replaced the Cassie and Azazeal romance with Ella and Malachi, and it just didn't work. Ella and Malachi were both weak characters, on screen. But again, I feel they had potential.
Overall, and I know I have said it several times, the show had potential but it really didn't deliver, which is a shame. It's about time we had a good fantasy/sci fi show to rival Buffy etc.
The Office (2005)
Loved this more than than the British version
As a Brit and a massive fan of the British version of The Office, I was very apprehensive about watching the US version. After watching it in its entirety, I can now say how much of an idiot I was, to be so sceptical.
The Office is just fantastic! The casting, the dialogue, the script, the character development... I cannot fault any of it! Best of all it had me in stitches! I loved every single episode and even cried a few times along the way. It's just brilliant.
Even though I didn't want to series to end and will miss not watching any further Office shenanigans, I think it was the right time for it to finish.
I would definitely recommend this to any apprehensive Brits out there! You don't know what you're missing!!!!
