The Beguiled (2017)

Dreadfully artsy
24 November 2020
This film is gorgeous, no question about it: the cinematography and settings are breathtaking and the acting is obviously incredible. But there barely is a story. Subtlety does not serve as an excuse for how Coppola failed to transmit an alleged underlying theme to the majority of her audience. Snobs will say the majority of people are stupid, of course. But shouldn't a good storyteller be able to get their message across with their art instead of afterwards in an interview? There is always the possibility that this movie wasn't really made for the average audience and instead is an artsy delight for a few. Which I personally think sucks. It was very easy for a few reviewers here to say that people don't like this film because it isn't fast-paced or in-you-face but that ain't it. I love indie films and would be bored to sleep by a Fast and Furious type of movie and yet I dreaded The Beguiled. I sure am not the only one. As a feminist I have to point out that it isn't rare for a female directed film to be disregarded and critiqued exclusively for that exact reason. But this isn't a feminist piece. The female characters fall into stereotypes and I wouldn't call addressing female lust by pitting women against each other for a man very empowering. I'm not happily bashing this movie, I truly went in hoping it was magnificent and got let down. Perhaps y'all are right and it's above my comprehension level.

Anne with an E (2017–2019)
10/10
Above all, it's Sweet
17 August 2020
Anne with an E is about an intelligent, curious, passionate and loving orphan who after a whole life of hardships finally finds a place where she belongs. Anne connects with people, animals and nature with such tenderness and empathy you'd never guess all that she has been through. Reality through the amazing lens that is Anne is not rose-coloured, but always hopeful. The show doesn't shy away from talking about trauma and highlighting sexism, racism, xenophobia and homophobia in the late 1800s. It managed to depict such important topics in a heart-wrenching way, all while remaining truly sweet in its core.

I couldn't finish it.
27 February 2020
Literally couldn't, I don't know how it ends. I spent like 3 hours watching and "playing" until I gave up. The movie doesn't really want you to choose. "The illusion of freedom" and whatnot. Pretentious really. Gotta admit it has it's entertaining moments and the acting is good therefore the four stars.

Don't watch 3-7.
14 February 2020
I watched this show when it first aired in 2011 during my adolescence. At some point I remember I stopped because it had gotten "dark" as my memory puts it. This year I tried to star it again and I absolutely get it, it literally got dark after the first half of season 3: I had to watch it with all lights out to be able to see (and I HATE it when shows do that). Of course it also got dark figuratively: it completely lost the lightheartedness and humor it had even in the most dramatic moments. First time I watched the series I stopped in the fifth season, now I'm finishing the third and will probably quit as well. Also what the f*s up with the absolute lack of chemistry between the new characters and the old cast? A bit cringeworthy. This pains me because I got very very excited after such and amazing first season but I regret to say that I was right, It's not worth finishing.

The age difference is messed up
4 November 2018
It is a beautiful movie, but I can't get past the giant age and power disbalance between Elio and Oliver. It's honestly weird and the fact that the film is beautifully shot doesn't change it. Also the build-up to their "love story" just didn't make a lot of sense to me. Timothé's acting is superb and that alone made me want to give this movie a perfect rating. Obviously, it wasn't enough, since I'm not into abuse being passed as love.

Little Women (2017)

Why comparing?
18 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't read Little Women. I didn't even know what it was about until I came around this. I've read many reviews and realised that the reason why most people disliked the series is that they kept comparing it to the book. In itself, this series is beautiful! Is has very good, believable acting, gorgeous cinematography, appealing characters and an overall good story. I didn't care for the way they decided to wrap up the story - Jo ends up married with kids, settles for a quiet life? Laurie marries Amy? What? Though I guess this was the author's decision, and not the director's. And I wouldn't have believed that Amy was supposed to be 13 had I not read it in the reviews, therefore, her childish behavior seemed very out of place when I watched this. Also, what's up with the 3rd chapter??? There wasn't room for much on screen character development, the audience had to guess it because time had passed basically, which I thought was a weird decision. Still, overall, this was good and enjoyable. Why comparing?

Not really worth watching after Season 5
7 August 2016
I love this series, I really do. And even though, as the title indicates, I don't recommend watching it beyond season 5, I do keep watching it (mainly because I fell in love with Sam and Dean's dependant and loving brotherhood).

Thing is, the show shouldn't have continued after season 5. They had it all wrapped up perfectly; it was a satisfying -arguably flawless- ending. It was absolutely obvious that the main reason the shop kept going was because it was profitable. Hell, even the show creator said that his intention was for it to last only five seasons.

If you get hooked with the show, you will want to watch the whole thing, but believe me, it's not worth it. Don't waste your time. After watching season 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, all I got was a bitter after- taste in each and every one of them. It stopped being epic and it stopped being clever. The so-called plot twists became predictable and frankly lame. They managed to make it so it can last forever, but no show should last forever.

Seasons 1 to 5 are an absolute 10 for me, while 6 to as-long-as- they-are-capable-of-making-money-out-of-this-show are a crappy 5. It's just disappointing.

If you are currently watching it and you haven't started season 6 yet: don't. Seriously. You'll lose your passion for it.
