Fixer Upper (2013)
Like it or hate it...
Like it or hate it, these two truly started a movement. They are the very reason you'll find Hobby Lobby in most mom's homes. I am not necessarily crazy about "farmhouse style" but I truly was entertained by the show back when it was airing. Some think Chip is annoying, but I find him not that bad and better than the usual robotic douche bags you see in home improvement shows these days - and sometimes Chip can actually be pretty funny and balanced out the serious nature of a subject that doesn't need to be so serious. Great emphasis on community and family and truly care about their work. It would be foolish to ignore the success this show has reaped.
Malignant (2021)
"Scream" meets "the Ring" meets... "the Matrix"..? I love it.
You'll sense a bit of campiness at the beginning, but, shoot, once you get into that third act... You need to be willing to laugh at horror if you want to enjoy the movie. It's by NO MEANS meant to be taken seriously like some other classics of James Wan.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself the entire movie but only because I was laughing through most of it. I guess the trailers threw off people because it gives a whole different vibe than what the actual movie is about.
It's definitely a tribute to that corny, classic kind of horror some of us love and miss.
The communication of the plot twist gets messy towards the end, and that's probably my biggest issue with the movie. A couple of plot holes like why/how does Gabriel have to communicate through speakers? Why does he have influence over electricity? Where does the super strength come from?
The change of pace at the end is bonkers and somehow we end up with this Matrix-like choreographed brutal, bloody, action scene that has you holding your face going "WHAT IS HAPPENING???"
The Pixies tribute is absolutely sick. I wish they would've brought it into the third act but unfortunately they didn't; added a sense of craziness earlier in the film. It would've been appropriate in the big brutal fight scene.
Anyways, don't take the movie too seriously. You love or you hate it for its campiness. I loved it. Give it a shot and don't let others tell you to avoid it.
