Cranford (2007)
British tv at its finest!
I just discovered this show on Britbox, the BBC streaming service here in the US. I enjoy British tv shows, even old ones, so much more than anything that is done here. And this show lives up to my expectations - good writing and good acting. The positive reviews say is it all - the show is beautiful, funny at times, heartbreaking at other times. I do not care if there are few liberties taken with history (and I am a former history teacher) or the books. I want to be entertained, and this show does just that. As for those who think the plots are thin or nonexistent, you are right. But that's what I love - character driven works, in tv and in books. If you like action, this isn't for you. If you like to immerse yourself in a period piece, even if it is a bit flawed, then you will enjoy this, and perhaps come to love it as I have.
Inspector Morse (1987)
Sadly disappointing
I was so excited when I discovered BritBox a month ago and could now watch shows I heard about for years. This was one of them. I have just watched the first season (series in Brit speak) and am quite disappointed. The main character, Morse, is quite simply a lech. (I am not against romance but he goes after women who are murder suspects for goodness sake!) And the narratives are quite disjointed making them hard to follow. I will try a few more episodes in the hope that it gets better but so far I am in no way impressed.
Heartland (2007)
Compelling drama with touches of wonderful humor
I have just finished watching Season 10 on Netflix and am going to start watching again from the beginning for the third time. That is how much I enjoy this show. Jack and Tim are great characters and the actors who portray them, Shaun Johnston and Chris Potter respectively, bring the characters to life with masterful performances. Chris Potter is the best actor in the series. His portrayal of Tim is nuanced and complex and takes what could have been a two dimensional character and gives us a complicated, flawed, funny, and lovable man. The Ty and Amy thread is the center of the series but other characters are woven in and out adding depth to the show. I would give this a 10 except that the character of Lou is just too flawed for me to like. Whereas Tim's flaws are compelling and complex, Lou's flaws are irritating and downright silly at times. That said, this is a beautiful show for those who like character driven stories, horses, and gorgeous scenery from western Canada. If you are looking for a wholesome, almost old fashioned type of show, then give this a try.
Summer Stock (1950)
Judy and Gene - two of my favorites
I just watched this movie again for the upteenthtime. (I have lost count.) I am always amazed at the talent of both stars, and that talent comes through in this movie beautifully. The musical numbers for both are wonderful to watch, reminding me that Judy could dance, something that isn't always remembered about her. As others have noted, the story is thin but who cares? This is pure entertainment and a chance to see two amazingly talented people work together in one film.
By the way, I watched the movie on video tape (yes, my vcr still works) that I bought at the Judy Garland museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota a few years ago. The museum is in her child hood home, and you can stand right on the landing at the bottom of the stars where she and her sisters performed at home. As a Judy fan, it was quite a thrill.
So enjoy this movie for what it is - a showcase of two of Hollywood's greatest talents singing and dancing their way into our hearts.
Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye (2002)
I love this show.
I just watched all three seasons and was sorry when it came to an end. I loved the actors and their characters (and the dog too) and how they all interacted with each other. The story lines were quite good with just the right amount of seriousness and humor, although there were times when I thought the writers stretched credibility just a tad. But that didn't ruin the show for me one bit. And, without giving anything away, I loved the cameo in the last episode of Season 1 and Season 3. Brilliant idea. If you like shows with heart, you should try this one. I wish there had been more seasons.
