Factory Girl (2006)
I liked it
Don't know what all the negativity is about.
I thought it was pretty good.
Pearce is good. Sienna is very good. The Dylan guy is good.
The movie does a decent job of portraying the mid-60's avant garde.
It takes us inside Warhol's Factory and improvises the going's on in that nutty place.
If you wanted to be on the cutting edge of hip Pop Culture during that time period in Manhattan then Warhol's world was one of those places to hang out.
The drugs, the films, the paintings, the ever present night events in NYC where Warhol and Sedgwick would constantly make appearances.
It's all in this movie.
It sketches out Edie Segwicks blistering rise to fame and then the drug fueled decent.
And Warhol turning his back on her.
The Age of Innocence (1993)
What a piece of junk
I can't believe Scorsese made this. Why?
Maybe it's another Scorsese and not Martin.
What a nothing story.
Daniel Day Lewis overacts as usual. I don't know why people think he's so great. He hams up his part to a ridiculous degree. But then, doesn't he always do that?
Michelle Pfeiffer's character is completely without redeeming value. Why DDL falls in love with her is beyond belief.
The Gilded Age in NYC was loaded with small and unlikable people and they are shown here but you certainly couldn't care less about them.
The only good acting is by Winona who isn't given enough to do.
If movies are supposed to draw you in and have you root or root against someone...... then this one fails mightily.
The Madness of King George (1994)
Nigel Hawthorne is amazing
He deserved the Oscar.
Helen Mirren is also superb.
All the actors turn in a fine performance.
It's like you're watching a tutorial on how to act.
The story about King George is interesting.
A king of England who has absolute power but looses his mind.
True Grit (2010)
Great movie
Everyone is good
I can't imagine anyone not loving this movie.
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
Great movie
Don't listen to the negative nabobs. This is Hitchcock at his best.
Jimmy Stewart is awesome.
Doris Day is stellar. She shines brightest in this film.
Camera work is unparalleled.
The plot is tense. The acting is excellent.
Don't miss it.
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Junk
If you're a regular American guy don't waste your time.
If you have a man bun or wear a stocking hat at the back of your head, then this definitely for you.
Kerry Washington's sucks. Can't act. You'll hate everyone in this cast except the father. But the kids?
You will despise them.
Political correctness from Hollywood.
A Slight Case of Murder (1938)
Edward G Robinson scores a winner
Don't believe the naysayers, this is a funny movie.
Edward G Robinson is hilarious and easily carries this movie. What a pro!
All the actors are A+ in this film.
The director Lloyd Bacon keeps this flick moving along briskly and it never lags.
You'll have plenty of laughs.
The Good Liar (2019)
Good movie
I don't know what all the grumbling is about.
This movie is very good.
Fun plot and expert acting.
For those of you complaining why don't you get a dog.
Don't listen to the naysayers. This is a movie worth watching.
Not every film is Casablanca.
The Affair: Episode #5.11 (2019)
Best finale I've ever seen
When it comes to series finale producers seem to stumble (ie, Seinfeld, Sopranos, etc).
But the Affair did not have that problem.
Hats off to the writers, producers and actors to a fantastic ending. Perfect.
The final scene is a heartbreaker.
Ladri di biciclette (1948)
I love that kid!
The movie is good but I didn't care for the lead actor.
Everyone else is good.
But the kid! He was wonderful. So much character in his face.
I believe that this is his first movie but you could have fooled me.
His face, his looks. The way he walks. He is a natural.
Watch it for him.
Interesting look at post war Italy although DeSica didn't show ANY bomb craters or rubble.
Going Highbrow (1935)
Fun thirties comedy
If you like the silly comedies of the 30s then check this movie out.
Everybody is good in this movie but Edward Everett Horton steals the show. He is excellent.
ZaSu Pitts is also top notch. But as I say all the actors show their stuff in this funny uptown romp.
Force of Evil (1948)
I wanted to like it
Didn't work for me.
I like Garfield but as a Wall Street lawyer?
Uh uh.
The plot is weak. Some nonsense about a big shot bookie trying to take over the smaller bookies and sharpie lawyer Garfield trying to protect his brother, one of the small bookies.
Mediocre script by Commie rat b______ Polonsky.
Anti capitalist subversive.
If you like John Garfield I think you will be disappointed.
The Revenant (2015)
It's just ok
Not the wonderful epic that everyone gushed about when released.
The first scene is awesome. Downhill after that.
Good opportunity to compare actors though:
Leo-mediocre actor.
Tom Hardy-best actor in the world
(other than Clint. But Clint is in his own category).
Who gets the Oscar? You know who.
Ain't Hollywood grand?
The Innocents (1961)
Tedious
Deborah Kerr is always good as she is here. But even she could not save this turkey.
This movie is in an attempt at Gothic horror. It fails.
To say this film is tedious is an understatement.
House of Strangers (1949)
Edward G Robinson is great
Good story of Italian immigrant banker helping out the community in 1932 only to get betrayed by three of his sons.
His fourth son tries to help dad keep his bank when the investigators close in.
Edward G is outstanding as the father. He is always good but he shines in this role.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Updated version of Medium Cool
If you've ever seen the 60s movie Medium Cool
you will see that this is an updated version of that idea.
This is an excellent character study movie about Jake Gyllenhaal's character.
He plays a creepy guy who gets himself a video camera and tries to get to the scene of an accident or fire in order to get tape that he can sell to TV station news outfits.
Rather than try to help the people who have been in an accident he's only concerned with getting a good shot.
Commentary on the sad state of affairs regarding today's news organizations.
Gyllenhaal is a fine actor and gives one of his better performances in this film.
Logan (2017)
Awesome
Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman were never better.
The action is blistering.
Logan and the Professor who are older and sick discover there's a new generation of X children being exploited by the bad guys.
The professor talks a very reluctant Logan into helping them escape danger and head north to a safe place.
The story is good and never boring.
An excellent ending to the X-Men saga.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
Very good Bond film
I had never seen this movie before today figuring Lazenby was going to be bad in it.
He is not great at the beginning of the film but as the movie develops I found myself warming up to him and by the end I really liked him.
He's good with the ladies and excellent in the action scenes. And the action is well done.
The pace moves right along all the way through. The last third really had me hooked.
It's a much different sort of Bond film. Lazenby has a good down to earth quality to him that plays well. He's not nearly as sophisticated as Connery but that's what I liked about him.
I think the movie is well directed. Diana Rigg is good. Kojak makes a decent villain but in the end Lazenby carries the picture.
It's too bad he didn't get a second chance to play Bond. That was his choice which he said he later regretted.
Petulia (1968)
?
What did I just watch?
It's fun to see Jerry Garcia before he had a beard.
It's always nice to see Julie Christie.
But the movie? What movie? What plot?
Did Richard Lester really make this film.
Total crap. Don't watch unless you want to see nice shots of late 60's San Francisco.
I guess Lester needs the Beatles to make a good film.
Night and the City (1950)
Widmark is great
Hard to believe Richard Widmark wasn't nominated for an Oscar. He is great in this movie.
Top notch film noir.
Seedy, dirty, dangerous London of 1950.
Gettysburg (1993)
Richard Jordan is very good
Richard Jordan was the best actor in this long movie. He acted like he was actually in a movie.
Martin Sheen is laughably bad as General Lee. I don't think he's a good actor anyway but here he is woefully miscast. He plays Lee as a doddering old fool who has lost touch with reality.
Tom Berenger is a good actor but he walks through his part.
Jeff Daniels is good as Chamberlain.
Sam Elliot is good in a small part.
Everyone else sucks.
They used re-enactors for this movie and it shows. Just not believable.
The movie is long and ponderous lacking the tension that the real Gettysburg must have had.
It's a Ted Turner production so I didn't expect much.
Watch Turner in a small part during Pickett's charge
Sicario (2015)
Junk
Nothing happens.
Blunt can't act.
Benecio overacts as usual.
Streisand's son in law is not bad.
There is no movie here.
Failed to hold my attention.
Watch something else.
Sudden Fear (1952)
Crawford is good
I'm not a big fan of Joan Crawford but she's pretty good in this film.
The movie has good edge of your seat tension as Joan Crawford's character slowly learns that her husband is planning her murder.
Jack Palance is menacing as the slicked down opportunist husband trying to steal Joan Crawford's money.
Gloria Grahame is also good as a smart alec girlfriend of Jack Palance.
Good use of the San Francisco locales. The outdoor shots are largely showing off the Lombard Street area with Coit Tower in the background.
This movie shows Joan Crawford with her Freakazoid look that she had developed. It would get more freaky looking as she got older.
Good noir film.
The Expanse: Home (2017)
Unbelievable
This may be the best episode of tv I've ever seen.
I've been a fan of this show since the beginning but this hour was just unbelievable.
The tension of the situation between Miller on the menacing Eros, the crew on the Rocinante and the brain trust on Earth is amazing.
I don't know how the producers, writers and actors did it but they must be proud of their achievement.
After watching it I was stunned. That's NEVER happened to me before with television.
Season 2, episode 5. Perfection.
The Florodora Girl (1930)
Marion Davies is something else
I've never seen a Marion Davies movie before.
I had heard of her of course. Shacking up with that creep Hearst is skin crawling. She went for the money I guess.
But that aside, she was an excellent comedian actress.
I was completely surprised when watching this film that Davies totally takes over your attention. Everyone in this film is a good actor but she lights up the screen in every scene she's in.
Her timing is flawless and her performance seems effortless.
I had read that at social gatherings she was the life of the party and that Hearst couldn't take his eyes off of her.
This movie kind of illustrates that.
I like to pick out the flaws of actors and movies because Hollywood is so self absorbed.
But Davies was something else in this film.
