Reviews
Motherless Brooklyn (2019)
Brilliant cinematography
Classic film noire in colour. It was like seeing an Edward Hopper painting in motion. Just a pity they didn't mention him in the credits...
The Guard of Auschwitz (2018)
Embarrassingly bad
I confess I gave up watching this about five minutes. The American actors trying to speak viz a chairman acczent, which as a previous reviewer said was like a bad parody of Allo Allo, but vizout der senz of humour.
The music - what can I say? If it had drums going ratatat it would be stock Hollywood heroic war movie stuff. Without, like this, it was just meaningless portentous suburban soap opera stuff.
As another reviewer pointed out, they should have learned something from Schindlers List.
There were no soft hearted german guards in Auschwitz - in fact most of the guards came from Lithuania, Ukraine and other occupied territories. Just as there were no soft hearted doctors, unless you count nice doctor Mengele.
A travesty and an insult to the million that died there.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (2020)
Does not approach series 2
What can I say. I have watched 3 episodes so far, and fail to see where this is going. And I don't mean in an edge of the seat way. It is just seriously boring. A shame, as the first series was excellent, with a nice mixture of real and famous fictional characters. This is just a mish-mash, where the only historical character, vaguely is Hitler, and apparently his Supporters
the correct word in the US, the Deutscher Bund. But So what, the plot goes nowhere, you have a partnership of a "chicano" rookie detective with a Jewish veteran cop.
But there no continuity in the plot. Or as I can see in it any sense so far. It's as though every episode has been written by a different writer, who has not seen the previous episodes.
