Good elements but overall disappointing
20 April 2022
This show has beautiful locations, fantastic cinematography, and a great, creepy soundtrack. The acting feels weak at times but I think it's actually the writing/dialogue. There are definitely creepy parts and atmosphere but overall it relies too heavily on jump scares to the point where it's no longer scary and tedious instead. Also, these jumpscares feel very repetitive. The relationships are not impactful due to the previous you mentioned week writing. A lot of potential but just fell short in a several of aspects for me.

Deceptive Title/Marketing
14 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
We don't deserve dogs, that is very true. But the title and clips I saw for this movie (and 95% of the movie itself) promote the wonder of dogs. Then, right near the end, totally off-tone and theme a dog is shown in a cage and then the dead carcass and the butchering process from afar. This felt very deceptive and out of place with the rest of the film and therefore I would never watch another documentary by these writers.

Excellent, why all the extreme negative reviews?
13 December 2020
This movie is fantastic, well acted, impeccable cinematography, unsettling score, and a very interesting and thoughtful (and thought inducing) plot. I truly don't get the extreme negative reviews, it's one thing if it's not your cup of tea but you can recognize that it's a very well made movie and so give it a 6 but come on, 1--4s?! If you like a well-crafted movie, aren't afraid of a slow burn, and are okay with a story that's not tied up in a neat little bow upon conclusion, then this is the movie for you!

Entertaining on Every Level

Excellent writing, directing, acting, and score! I read the reviews and was really puzzled as what I was going to get with this movie. There is absolutely nothing polarizing or exceptionally crazy about the music, I found it fitting and engaging. It seems like some people have a real agenda against this movie. Sure, there were a couple of cliche moments but far less than most action movies you will see. Overall I found the movie exceptionally entertaining and far above average.

Sweet, Funny, & Sad
27 June 2020
This movie is exceptionally well paced, written, and acted. It's a charming, funny, and entertaining story while bringing in scary facts about our election system and placing the blame squarely on both party's shoulders. If you're concerned about the movie having a left lean b/c of John Stewart you shouldn't be too worried. He is more concerned w/ pointing out the ridiculousness of the entire election system and how both parties capitalize off of it then "pushing a liberal agenda". Very entertaining and educational!

One of my favorite shows ever
8 February 2020
This show was such a joy to watch. Every episode was so layered with fear and family drama and sadness and depth unlike any show I've ever watched. An amazing story with fantastic characters and actors and directing. That funeral home episode, episode 6, is amazing! Seriously, read the behind-the-scenes after you watch it and watch it again. I've watched several other things by Mike Flanagan since this and he is a gem, I'm so excited to see what else he comes out with.

What I think this movie is about...
12 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
You've read all of the other reviews about the fantastic acting, stunning scenery and cinematography, and unsettling score so I will concur and skip those aspects. One thing I will add to the unsettling part, I hate gore, I read the MPAA rating reviews (minus spoilers) to know what I'm getting myself into. I thought this would be worse and almost didn't watch but I could see over half the icky parts coming and look away and I was glad I watched anyway. I'm a big fan of smart, slow-burner suspense movies and this is the epitome of that. The spoilers talk about Dani's integration and assimilation with nature and ultimately the cult. For me the main theme and why she joins them is empathy. She goes through the most traumatic moment of her life and she's grieving w/ every part of her soul and her boyfriend awkwardly holds her in his lap, looking miserable, barely touching her. Contrasted w/ discovering his betrayal and all of the woman holding, touching, and grieving with her. This empathizing is seen in many scenes with the cult members; the cliff dive dying man, the orgy, and the final burning. I'm sure there's many more aspects I missed and I look forward to googling other theories. But the scene where Dani's pain is finally shared and validated made me cry and, in a movie scenario at least, understand her final actions.

Disappointing & Dreadful Dialogue
10 October 2019
It was surprising to read such extremely positive and extremely negative reviews of a movie. I had no idea what to expect going in but most of the reviewers made me think it would be absolutely terrifying. Instead I was board watching the same ol' same ol' zombie scenarios play out...and I'm a huge chicken! I've seen far better (and scarier) episodes of The Walking Dead. To give it the benefit of the doubt, I watched a version dubbed in english so the acting was probably worse than the original. That being said the dialogue is just agonizingly bad. The ending is surprising and a little scary but overall not worth it.
