Another Life (2019)
"Lost In Space" but for adults
If you're looking to poke holes you're going to find many, and that will ultimately spoil your experience. If you're on the other hand looking for something amusing and fairly non-stressful to watch that is remotely related to sci-fi then this is it. Overall, it reminds me a lot of the old-fashioned Canadian syfy shows, which were quite good and amusing, this show is in the same ballpark.
Tau (2018)
perfectly fine Sunday evening movie
There is nothing special about this movie, everything that happens in it has been done in other movies, sometimes better sometimes worse. Despite this, it's not a terribly bad movie. It's fine. It's perfectly watchable. It's entertaining and the main character is quite good in the role of the protagonist, the voice of the AI is also great and I think its character was well developed through the film. Mr. Evil Guy as always wasn't really fleshed out at all, they could have used a carton cutout and it won't have made a difference in the film. There are also some problems with CGI here and there, but that does not dectract from the viewing experience.
For a low-budget Netflix movie, I think this is a winning combination of a good enough movie that doesn't pretend to be something that it's not. For some this will be fine, for others it's obviously going to be an infuriating experience. You decide.
Kill Switch (2017)
Decent Friday evening movie to watch with pizza and friends
It's a reasonably well acted and an interesting sci-fi film. It's not the most exciting nor smart film ever, but it's not terribly bad either. It has some elements from first-person shooter games, some other parts are your typical scenes, some tropes from other sci-fi films, etc. Very average sci-fi flick.
I don't think it's good enough to pay money to watch it at the cinema, but if you can find it on Netflix or Amazon Prime, then go for it. You might actually be pleasantly surprised.
Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)
A Kaiju-sized middle finger to del Toro's Pacific Rim
The first film was an ode to Japanese mecha anime and Kaijus. It was serious, loud, sweet, and perfectly executed -- the ultimate guilty pleasure. This film is none of that, it's a sloppy attempt at making money on the glory of the first film.
The storyline doesn't really make any sense, the characters are forgettable and stay undeveloped throughout the entire movie, and for some reason the CGI and compositing are atrocious. In one of the scenes, you can clearly see that John Boyega is acting in front of a green screen.
The color palette and physics of the film have also been changed; while the first one was slow, dark, and gritty, thus showing the massive scale of the Kaijus and the Jaegers and their battles, the sequel is bright, fast, and has an unusual blue tint. Now the Jaegers for some reason can do backflips, bringing the film closer to Power Rangers and the Transformers. Finally, some of the panning shots in the film were obviously done to show the new robots in their full glory. If you take into account the underage cast, this film is nothing more than a two hour long toy commercial.
I did not like this film, and I hope this is the end of the franchise. I don't even know why they made a sequel to the first film. Two stars for the effort.
