National Treasure: Edge of History (2022)
Another girl-boss-production
This is a show that is almost completely unbearable to watch.
The creators do not understand what made the source material if not great, then at least entertaining. This is one of those frantic attempts to be Wokier than thou, making preceived marginalized stereotypes into übermench by using hamfisted scriptwriting, creating caricatures of humans that we in no way could indentify with.
There is no point of going through any of the plot. This show is not about that, it is about gender politics and empowerment. It is about the usual pushing of an agenda. And it is not working. I believe we are seeing the last death throes of this dark part of entertainment history that has brought down so many great frenchaises to date.
And you simply do not replace Nic Cage with Mary Sue.
House of the Dragon: Second of His Name (2022)
Take note Amazon - This is how you do it.
Since we have been gifted by two simultaneous series, House of the Dragon and Rings of Power, it is pretty hard not to put them against each other.
While House of the Dragon has several easily memorable characters, and some very strong ones, Rings of Power has many characters. Period.
This episode shows you how to do it. I do not spoil anything, but there are several times the outcome of the events were totally unknown. It is quite simply not possible to know if a character will live or die in any given moment. That is a true strength and invests you in what is happening, especially if you root for someone or at least likes a character enough to be interested in how far that character will be taken.
Rings of Power have nothing of the sort. We know who lives and we know who dies, and when. The main plot of the series has a very known end. When the main character is threatened, we know there is not real threat. Plot armor galore, nothing but plot armor for days. And no mysteries are any real mysteries, as again, we know that whatever is presented in the series will not in any way affect the main story.
This episode was spectacular by the way. There was a little filler, sure. There was more of the usual modern day political activism, absolutely - we get it - the evil patriarchy must be mentioned in every episode, no matter how tiresome it becomes. And perhaps we do not really like budget-Daenerys as much as the showrunners would like us to do. But those things are really easy to forgive when the rest of the package is of such high quality.
The Flash: Revenge of the Rogues (2015)
Oh, the pain of bad writing.
I give this episode a 3 due to it having The Flash in it.
I understand that this show, just as The Arrow, have limited funding, is a TV show, and is produced at breakneck speed by a gang of enthusiasts severely controlled by a bunch of execs, but even under such circumstances it is actually possible to create something approaching watchable.
This episode was cringe worthy. I usually bury my face in a pillow as soon as 'feelings' are mentioned in this series. In this ep. it came up a lot of times - 'Oh, I confessed my feelings...' 'You should talk about your feelings for her...' 'Oh, crash and burn when I explained my feelings...' I mean, who talks like this? Nobody! Interspersed between the feelings-drivel we get some of the worst 'tension-building' with a laughable fight between The Flash and a couple of idiotically written bad guys, surrounded by even more stupid policemen bearing shields and unused guns that could end the fight in 2 seconds.
I seriously hope the series will improve. I want super-speed, heavy hitting bad guys and cool crimes in need of a stopping. I want marvellous science. What I don't want is an endless teen-angsty pusflood of feelings.
