Undead or Alive: A Zombedy (2007)
Felt like an idea conceived at a fraternity reunion booze-fest, carried out the next afternoon with hangovers and regrets.
It wasn't very good. The cinematography, story line, makeup, costumes, and gross-out factor were okay for a cowboy/zombie/comedy movie. The horses and scenery were filmed well. The concept should have been acceptable to build a comedy around, but the attempt failed. The story line includes saloon girls, the town priest, the sheriff, graveyards, and various and sundry shots of zombie slaughtering. Nevertheless, the script, direction, and acting were poor. Actually, Leslie Jordan was okay and James Denton was not too awful, but Chris Kattan (of Saturday Night Live) and Navi Rawat are really, really poor. No one seemed to realize that for this kind of film to work the characters must take themselves and each other seriously. Perhaps the makers envisioned something like "Blazing Saddles" with zombies, but it just didn't work out. It felt like an idea conceived at a fraternity reunion booze-fest, and carried out the next afternoon with hangovers and regrets. Even for the hardened zombie fans, this one is hardly worth a visit.
Sahara (2005)
A lavish, vigorous attempt at exciting entertainment
It started with an interesting action scene of an ironclad-ship battle in the Civil War, and the rest was riddled with helicopters, explosions, gunfire, death-defying leaps, vertigo- inducing rescues, plague victims, chase scenes involving trains, cigarette boats, and an antique roadster, ingenious mechanical improvisations, and the occasional decorous presence of Penelope Cruz. At this red carpet Premiere there were frequent cheers by the hometown Austin crowd whenever Matthew rescued the damsel or otherwise saved the day, but even this highly receptive audience could not muster more than polite, forced- enthusiasm in their final applause. It seems like it is trying to be Indiana Jones, but without any Harrison Ford. Female viewers may be enthralled with Matthew (as they were by his personal appearance at this Premiere) but, although he seems like a cool guy, I found myself not paying much attention to what his character said, did, or was about to do.
