The Twilight Zone: The Fever (1960)
Spine-tingling -- rings true to all addicts out there
The way that Franklin gradually descends from a holier-than-thou, prudish accountant against gambling to a self-absorbed, addicted gambler himself, is such a classic transition. Not over-the-top, but rather how some people behave while they gamble all the time. I do feel sincerely sorry for his wife Flora, standing aside and watching him gamble all their savings away. This episode rings true to not only the gamblers, but also the alcoholics, drugs addicts, etc. As Serling very well puts it, an activity that you can enjoy only sparingly becomes highly dangerous as it will cost you your family, your friends, your job, and your future. Gambling, when played constantly, can be as feverish as drinking alcohol.
The Twilight Zone: On Thursday We Leave for Home (1963)
This episode rings true for all potential megalomaniacs
You know, during the entire episode, I could not help but sympathize with James Whitmore's character. Here he is, trying to keep 187 men, women, and children alive on the desert planet with hopes of returning to Earth. As the ship arrives, he is initially happy, but as the ship captain fills the colonists in on life on Earth, Benteen refuses to give up control. I honestly could not decide whether he has kept the people alive out of his own selfish need for power or for survival of the fittest. He seems to be a nice guy in spite of his flaws. I do not think his punishment in the end is that harsh at all because he has made his choice, whether the ship captain likes it or not. I think he deserves the consequences for his most foolish choice.
The Twilight Zone: Twenty Two (1961)
room for one more, darling
I had such a nightmare about the beginning of this episode! It was exactly like how it was in the beginning, waking up in the hospital, clock ticks, glass of water breaks, everything else except this time the nurse is a man from the past. As he steps out of that morgue, it was someone I know from my waking life and he has this sinister smile on his face! He says to me, "room for one more, darling". That's when I woke up. Some episodes can chill you to the bone, but this one can really give you nightmares, if you have a bad case of fear of hospitals or death. Despite the episode filmed in videotape, I really liked the episode because I am very fascinated with dreams. Sometimes they may save your life, or point your attention to your waking life. Please watch this episode and it will leave you in suspense.
American Masters: Ralph Ellison: An American Journey (2002)
a movie version of I'm?
do you think there will be a movie version of Invisible Man? when i first read the book, i totally saw it as a movie playing out the narration of the unnamed black man. the protagonist in the movie Rebecca had no name, thanks to the direction of Sir Alfred Hitchcock. If they did a movie with an unnamed hero like Rebecca, why not Invisible Man? they can come up with creative ways to keep the narrator from being named, right? Like in the documentary, have the guy narrate the voice-over and the same guy acting out the events that the narrator points out. let me say this, i personally love this book because the details captured my mind.
Ice (1998)
Worst disaster movie ever made
this is probably the worst disaster movie ever made. You guys are retarded! All there is in this film is land full of snow and ice and a group of retards looking for a hotter place. Gosh, idiots! What were you guys thinking when you made this piece of crap? You're bugging the heck out of me. Gosh, idiots! Why don't you just watch this, see if you can beat yourselves up for making this in the first place. Why make this movie about a country basically a bigger version of the Arctic? It's almost like you guys have to live in Antarctica to make this movie. You writers probably have nothing else to do but to think up a story with selfish people, retarded special effects, and no credibility.
Zuotian (2001)
This movie will tug at your heartstrings
I must say, every time I see this movie, I am deeply touched, not only by the most painful four years of Hongsheng's life, but also by how his family deals with his drug addiction. It is also true that getting addicted to anything, such as drugs, alcohol, or pornography, cannot only hurt you, but also hurt your most important people in the world: your family. Since family is the #1 priority in the Asian culture, it takes guts for the circle to gather together and show one person how much the family loves him/her. this is actually the first Chinese movie that I actually enjoy, not for the fun of it, but the elements surrounding it (superb acting, touching story, great direction) make this movie worth watching. What stands out the most is that Hongsheng and his family act out the story themselves instead of having some B-movie actor trying to imitate the real person. It shows the genuineness of the movie.
Radio (2003)
heartwarming movie
I gotta hand it to you. The first time i watched this on satellite, it actually made me cry that someone like that would suffer more in the '70s than right now. it helped me understand more about my brother who is autistic himself, that people like radio would inspire others in a way that only themselves can. i cried at the end, knowing that it hit right at home. I know that sometimes we feel self-conscious, but we got to understand that these people may have a way of reminding us that life is full of wonder and simplicity. sometimes it takes them to give us better perspective of what life is all about. when coach Jones that radio is the one who teaches us, that captured my heart because i am one myself and they have this light that shines out in the world of darkness.
A Vow to Cherish (1999)
great impact
That one scene where Phil finally accepts Jesus as his Savior, it sent me crying b/c it's true that we're all sinners here, but we have a choice. Phil made that choice and what great courage to choose God as his life! He kind of reminds me of myself before I accepted Jesus into my life.
You know something. Something like a terrible disease hitting the family, it happened to my grandma two years ago. She died of brain aneurysm, but the amazing thing she did was she accepted Christ as her Savior days before she passed on. It's strange because all her life, she never believed there was a God until she was struck by that. I'm really glad she made that choice. So I can relate to that movie.
