Get Shorty (2017)
Excellent ensemble less one small exception
This might have been the most enjoyable television so far seen in 2017.
I really enjoyed Master of None, but this Chris O'Dowd actor made me want to see this series. Now, the SO and I watched -- not easy as it's only on epics --- every episode. Really, really looking forward to the next. And the next. And so on and so forth.
You may begin to watch the series for Chris O'Dowd but you stay to watch Sean Bridgers. They both, and I mean both, are smartly and deftly played. I cannot tell if it's the direction, the actor, happenstance or all three, but it's worth every minute. Of course Lidia Porto has a role that no one will ever forget, either.
Its a total of 10 episodes and you definitely want to begin with episode one. I let the SO begin somewhere afterwards and it only made us need to begin with episode one. So, if you tried to watch this in any other order than by one first, go back and watch one. You have to.
That being said the charm rarely lets up and it's like a 10. Until...until...episode 10. Where it kinds of messes the bed. Not a bad mess mind you, just some duty where clean sheets ought to be. Maybe they think they are going to return for season 2? Maybe they ran out of ideas? In any event the finale is OK, just, not perfect.
Perhaps when season II rolls out, we'll get that fixed. Enjoy
The Harsh Life of Veronica Lambert (2009)
Can I be the first to review this Jeff Bezos?
Picked this up from my local Blockbuster (one wonders how long one can make that statement) as nothing else was available and I had the freebie. According to IMDb it comes out in 2009 and Blockbuster has it coming out in 2011. In any event it's 2012 (barely) and just finished watching a very well done indie film about life of young people in Hollywood. All the elements of a good movie are here including terrific acting on all accounts. This is not some sloppy poor done crap. Everything was done about as well as can be expected from what had to have been a limited budget. The lighting and cinematography were first rate. The sound guy(s) did an excellent job. The score was OK, but, this reviewer has little knowledge of what makes good music nowadays so I'll put that out there. For me, a good movie is one that is believable. I don't care if it's Star Wars or Blazing Saddles, if some plot hole makes it ridiculous than the time invested is wasted. So, while I say that it does have one particular sin, but the acting and direction were so well done that I can overlook that caveat.
As for what this movie is about, it's a character study and the movie is done in vignette style, with each piece focusing on most but not all of the characters. It is also done a little out of sync, but it all makes sense in the end.
I liked it. Didn't love it. But figured that with so much garbage out there a tip of the hat to something that is not is worth my effort.
I didn't recognize any of the actors but they were all nice looking so it's doubtful that any of them would not want this piece to show up on their resume. They all did a very credible job and the final cut was very, very well done.
