The Honeymoon (2022)
what do people expect????
This film is dumb, it's silly, there is no method acting to admire and it has an infantile 'locker room' sensibility. Oh yeah... and its funny. But only if you like that sort of thing. I have no idea why people who hate this type of film write reviews on here. Its clearly the 'genre' they have a problem with and not the film. It is not a 10 star comedy but I feel I have to balance things out as the 1 star reviews are scandalous. Lots of 'laugh out loud' moments here as long as you aren't expecting Tarkovsky. Nice to see an international ensemble cast and Venice has never looked more beautiful. If you're in the mood for some silly laughs, you won't be disappointed.
Love Wedding Repeat (2020)
Boldly British with contemporary sensibilities but above all... funny.
Enjoyable, entertaining and funny ensemble film which may have had a deeper resonance on this reviewer during these strange times of 'lockdown' and 'social distancing'. I, for one, cant wait to go to a wedding/party again.
No 'meet cute' in sight and no male hero trying to win a girls heart, just a couple of individuals who are a potentially good match (or not) struggling against nothing but fate, life and circumstance with lots of laughs (for us) along the way. You get the feeling that the two lead characters would be fine with alternative partners. There is no 'soul mate'/'meant to be' principle framing things... quite the opposite, life can work out in a million different ways (or not). This is the central conceit of the film and writer/director Dean Craig grabs the idea, runs with it and dresses it up to look like four weddings but don't be fooled. There is much more going on here. In that sense this film has more in common with the unassailable 'ground hog day' than the Richard Curtis 'schmaltz' it so often (superficially) looks like. There is also a 21st century freshness to the whole thing, notable in the handling of the female characters which deserves special mention and praise. The cast are great, the writing spot on and the film delivers on what it promises.
