Black Mirror: Demon 79 (2023)
Could they have been any clearer that this is a RED MIRROR episode
Honestly, some of the people whinging on here "this is not black mirror" etc - how do you people actually function in day to day life? It's so clearly labelled as a red mirror episode and something clearly different from the others. Brooker has even stated this directly in interviews.
On top of that, this series, whilst it has often cantered around technology, that ISN'T the purpose of the show - not every single episode has to have this premise.
This episode was great, possibly the best of the series, certainly the funniest at times. The two leads are absolutely fantastic and have a lot of chemistry that really drives the story forward.
I think this will end up being the first of many Red Mirror episodes, can't wait!
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
Put your toys back in the Pram
Waaaaah! Waaaaah! That's all I hear when I flick through these Whiny little reviews by insecure idiots, probably a little unsure about their masculinity. I'm a 38 yr old male, and have enough common sense to realise this isn't a show aimed at me, but there's still plenty to enjoy about it.
My Daughter and I watched it together and really enjoyed it. It's got a solid plot throughout with some fantastic voice acting and great animation.
I get that it's not what you would expect if you're coming from a generation that was around for the first incarnation of He-Man & co.
But just because it isn't in-line with what you thought it would be, try and keep an open mind. Just because something as a program has strong female characters doesn't make it 'woke' or any of those other buzzwords you read on your right-wing platforms.
Looking forward to the next season - Producers, don't listen to the haters - look what happened with 'The Rise of Skywalker' when that happened last.
Mortal Engines (2018)
No. 1 on my list
...of films that look amazing but is in fact absolute garbage
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Looks like the 'Last Jedi Haters' got what they were after
Oops - this was not good.
I was pretty on-board with the last two instalments of this franchise, sure, they had flaws but I actually think the story was strong, and the Kylo Ren character was superbly crafted and performed by Adam Driver (who, to be fair, is the only stand out performer in this)
This film, however, lets that all down.
The moaners and haters that have been absolutely infuriatingly relentless since the Last Jedi came out seem to have got their way with this film. There is absolutely lashings of 'fan' service throughout this film, lots of references, callbacks and, excuse the pun, forced nostalgia.
That, coupled with an incredibly rushed storyline that smacks off JJ Abrahams trying to tell some version of the story he wanted to tell. The story itself is weak, the first act in particular is an absolute mess, flashing through scenes at lightening pace all with really hokey dialogue (a tribute to George Lucas?) and humour that never once lands.
In terms of ranking, this film ranks firmly near the bottom for me, only being beaten in infuriating crapness by the trauma that was watching attack of the clones .
I guess what this film does prove is that if you stomp your feet loud enough, Disney will take notice. Naive though, as I'm sure they will now realise that the same group who were calling for a lot of this will end up hating this too.
Dirty John: The Dirty Truth (2019)
Terribly executed documentary
Thought I'd actually watch this before trying the drama on Netflix, really wish I hadn't.
It's rubbish, and a fairly boring story, to be honest, delivered in a very cheesy and at times annoying way.
There's constant recaps throughout, which would be from the ridiculous amount of ad breaks they have on American television. Mind-boggling that they couldn't just of edited this for release on a streaming service, around 10 times you have to hear the same sentence repeated immediately after it was just delivered. Not only that, the people being intereviewed then often repeat what has already been said as well, god-knows what the editor was doing. Underneath all of this is a constant drone of 'dramatic documentary' music which you can often find in bad/cheap American documentaries.
The actual story itself is of a manipulative, drug addicted, possessive guy. Seems like a nasty piece of work but probably not horrific enough to somehow make a drama series out of it.
It's essentially lots of people stating over and over what a bad guy he was, whilst not really showing much that warrant a detective to state that he was person he'd ever preosecuted.
Theer's No real exploration or explanation of why he was like this. Give it a miss.
