Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Didn't expect much, was pleasantly surprised
I tend not to enjoy these big blockbuster superhero movies (with Venom being really the only exception) but my boyfriend LOVES them so he has me watch them all the time. I came into this movie having not seen the other two recent Spider-Man movies (or any of the Andrew Garfield ones, or the second and third Tobey Maguire ones) so I assumed I would be lost the whole time and asking a million questions. Well, I really enjoyed this movie. It was fun and actually pretty easy to follow with just a general knowledge of the MCU, and there were some genuinely hilarious moments. If you're like me and aren't a huge fan of these types of movies, give this one a try anyway. It'll surprise you.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
Exciting, Fun, and Charming
One of my favorite movies of all time. I've seen it probably 4 times and every time I love it just as much. It's quirky and goofy but endless fun to watch, and the cinematography is simply incredible. Definitely recommend to everyone.
Peacemaker (2022)
Fun, Funny, and Exciting
In a time where most superhero movies and shows are dark, gritty, and downright depressing, it's so refreshing to have a show that made me laugh out loud several times per episode. The writing is great, the acting is superb, and the story is fun and interesting without being overly serious. A lightheartedness is very present throughout the entire show, but there are still dramatic and tense moments. In my opinion, a perfect balance was struck here. I wish I could watch it all over again.
Army of Thieves (2021)
Fun and visually stunning
I really enjoyed this movie! I love heist movies so that was a major plus for me, and I thought the acting was really good. I'm honestly not sure why this movie has so many negative reviews. It came off to me as a movie that was just supposed to be fun and not too serious. I mean there were title cards for each character for gods sake. Sebastian was adorable and I loved that he was just a little nerd who liked safes, while the rest of the team are these bad ass criminals. Korina was funny and brilliant, Gwen was tough and complex, Rolph was charming and cheesy, and Brad was just a typical "action hero" type man. I loved this. Fun to watch from start to finish, and the cinematography had me floored. Good twists and a nice mix of serious moments, action sequences, and lightheartedness.
Black Widow (2021)
Pugh + Harbour are magic! Braid city
Wow there's a lot to talk about with this one. Let's start with the positives.
David Harbour and Florence Pugh were absolutely PHENOMENAL in this movie. They both added some much-needed comic relief, stellar acting, and two of the best accents in the movie (sorry Rachel but what was that????). Florence Pugh's character, Yelena, finally fulfilled my life's dream of a female Marvel character wearing a practical outfit during action scenes! The white outfit was not skin-tight, not revealing, and not overly feminized. There was padding and protection on her joints and vulnerable areas, yet she still looked really good. Did I mention it wasn't skin-tight?! A+ in that regard. Not to mention her vest, which I loved as much as Yelena did. Even Natasha's outfits weren't hyper-sexualized, though they were very very tight. Hey, maybe that's her preference. I don't take too much issue with that, it was just really refreshing to see a female superhero in BAGGY PANTS!
Another positive, as always with Marvel movies, the fight scenes were beautifully choreographed. The stunts looked great and the editing was great as well.
On to the negatives. My main gripe with this action movie was that it was barely an action movie. I think there were maybe 4 action scenes in the whole movie. The majority of the two hours was spent on family drama and the repetitive mentions of having children, because that's all women care about, apparently. The idea behind the plot was good, and this was a huge chance for a female empowerment moment around freeing the widows and making a badass female assassin crew, but nope. A LOT of crying and a lot of hairstyle changes for no reason.
Which brings me to my next point. The hair. I'm all for suspending my disbelief when it comes to superhero movies, but the hair in this movie irritated me to no end, and is the sole reason I'm writing this review. Why did every female character keep putting their hair in these ridiculously complicated braids?? Natasha, Yelena, and Melina kept switching from one over the top braided hairstyle to another, and half the widows had these crazy braided hairstyles, too. The dinner scene irritated me the most. When they're all seated at the table, Natasha has her hair down with two large braids on the left side of her head. Melina has her hair in this very complicated series of braids coiled all around the back of her head (which was beautifully done, by the way) with a whole bunch of visible small elastics. Yelena has her hair in a large halo-type braid. Flash forward to the next scene, after they've been "captured", and Natasha now has about a dozen small braids all wrapped fancily around a ponytail, Melina has a ponytail, and Yelena has two ponytails (or a half updo, I can't remember). WHEN DID THEY EACH HAVE THE TIME TO REDO THEIR HAIR???? I'm really bothered by this. Melina's hair alone would have taken at least ten minutes to undo, and her hair would have been incredibly curly once she did take it out. Yelena's hair also would have been way curlier than it was. Don't get me wrong, I really loved all the different hairstyles, and they were all done so well, but you expect me to believe that the doctors that were about to lobotomize Yelena took the time to undo her braid and put her hair in a ponytail? Sure. Also, when Nat was fighting on the ship, her hair was in several braids that were tied in a ponytail, then when they were on the ground again most of those braids were undone. Who took the braids out?
Okay, I'm done ranting about hair. My final negative: the storytelling. Aside from the fact that this barely qualifies as an action movie in my opinion, my main issue with the story was that I was completely lost almost the whole time. A hero's first solo movie should be easy for a newcomer to follow. I've seen most Marvel movies and could barely follow this one. I don't see how anyone who hasn't seen at least half of the movies would be able to keep up, especially in the first half hour.
Overall, not terrible. Great costuming and fight choreography, bad storytelling and frustrating hair.
American Horror Story: Take Me to Your Leader (2021)
Meh.
Okay, let's do this.
The first episode of Red Tide hooked me IMMEDIATELY. I was completely invested from the get go, and I typically don't care for vampire stories. This episode, however... not so much. There are three things I think AHS is known for at this point: phenomenal acting, great visual effects, and interesting storytelling. I think all three of those went out the window here.
First off, the acting. I LOVE Kaia Gerber, I think she's gorgeous and she's a great model, and I didn't even think she was too bad in American Horror Stories. Maybe that role was better suited for her. However, her acting really took me out of the story here. There were several times where she was WAY overacting, moving too much and over-emoting, then there were times where her delivery was so flat it was laughable. There were no subtleties in her acting. It was either too much and in your face, or deadpan. I want her to succeed and I really hope she improves, because at this point I'm not sold. I thought the others did well, standouts of course being Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, and Neal McDonough (who I never realized really does look like Eisenhower! +2 points to casting director).
Next, the effects. Um. Some of them were good. Some. Some of them looked like they came out of those crappy Sci-Fi movies made for TV. The first head explosion actually made me laugh out loud, and the woman's white eyes were inconsistently shaped from shot to shot. Sometimes you could even see the edges move and distort, like it was rushed and they didn't go back through to check if it looked right. What really got me was the alien thing on the guys faces, which, let's be honest, looked absolutely ridiculous. I'm so far disappointed.
Finally, the storytelling. Compared to other seasons of AHS, but more specifically to Red Tide, which I think had a fantastic story (albeit a little rushed at the end there), I could not for the life of me get into this story. Mostly due to the fact that they already did aliens! Granted they already did vampires too, but the differences between the story of Hotel and Red Tide were apparent right off the bat. Similarities from Asylum and Death Valley:
Alien abduction. Check.
Alien impregnation and probing. Check.
White light and electronics going haywire. Check.
Aliens giving people powers. Check.
Aliens distorting people's voices. Check.
Even the way the aliens look is similar.
There's nothing wrong with repeating themes, but this so far is very similar to Asylum, and I'm not into it. Also I understand that some of these things are common things associated with aliens in general, but X-Files managed to make 11 seasons of different alien stories with different storylines.
TLDR: I'm overall disappointed. In my opinion, this is (so far, I'm hoping it will improve) miles below the typical standard of AHS, and not even in the same stratosphere as the start of Red Tide.
Only Murders in the Building: The Boy from 6B (2021)
Utterly fantastic
This is a true testament to good storytelling. Like three spoken words in the entire episode and still I was on the edge of my seat. The plot was easy to follow and the twists were well-placed. I really really enjoyed this. I do see how this could have been difficult to follow for those who don't typically watch with subtitles, as some of the lines went by quickly, but overall I'm honestly floored. So, SO good.
American Horror Stories: Feral (2021)
So good and so fun to watch
Really really enjoyed this one!! Fun story, interesting and well developed characters, and fantastic costuming and makeup. The creatures were so fascinating visually. This episode was everything I have been hoping for the whole season.
American Horror Stories: Rubber (Wo)man: Part One (2021)
Meh.
Overall not terrible, but I really don't think this added anything to the Murder House story. I'm disappointed by the fact that the Harmons made no appearance aside from one throwaway line from the therapist when they made it their entire mission to scare people out of buying the house. Did they just forget about that? For that matter, where were any of the dozens of other spirits in the house? I think only one has an actual appearance, aside from the rubber man that were just supposed to believe is Tate (I assume) when it looks nothing like him?
Also, I'm EXTREMELY disappointed that the death reveal for the dads was the EXACT SAME ONE they used for Violet in Murder House. Trying to run out of the house but ending up back in the kitchen, then a flashback to when they died. I really didn't like that. There were so many other ways they could have done that, like having them stumble upon their own bodies. Even shaving Ruby explain it to them would have been more creative and exciting than using the same exact reveal.
I'm very disappointed, but holding out hope for improvement.
American Horror Stories: Game Over (2021)
It's a no for me.
Okay, I came into this episode with an open mind. I enjoyed practically nothing about this episode. I'm disappointed in how much of this show has revolved around murder house when I find those episodes to be the least successful. I wish there had been other episodes like Feral, the drive in movie one, and baal. I wish the creators would stop beating this dead horse and move on to new stories.
