The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996)
Surprisingly Absolutely Funny
About a half hour in, while enjoying the awkwardness of the two main misfits, suddenly he makes me laugh uncontrollably unbelievably for at least ten seconds. I am still smiling minutes later after his surprise as I write this. I can't remember laughing so much, ever, all alone, in the middle of the night.
The two intellectual professors really engage you in their oddball academic environment, their oddball lives. I'm sure there are real people like them out there somewhere. And quite possibly many academics are just that eccentric.
The romantic seduction of two minds blunders through hazard after hazard - but then I guess all romance zigzags back and forth before true love reigns.
The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000)
Among the Best of the Best
When I saw the 6.7 overall score I was perplexed. How could that be? So I had to explain just what a wonderful movie it is. It's not about golf or sport or romance - really nothing trivial, unless that's all you can see now. Let the metaphor take you up to the next level, then on, and on.
The writing, the directing, the acting, the story, the TRUTH - this is a GREAT movie, for everyone. We have to lift our eyes up; this life is more magical than we can possibly imagine. Find your authentic swing - who you really are - for eternity.
I just happened to find some Bagger scenes on the net, and in moments I was in tears of joy all over again. What a brilliant important film!
Breakaway (2011)
Welcome to Canada, My Friends
Real religious people are by far in the minority in the West, but here we see a heart-warming tear-filled tale of victory as a group of fun characters adapt to the world of Canadian childhood.
We lived for hockey all winter - independence, success, friendship, happiness was the basis of life for Canadian boys. And these players reflect that Canadian happiness we all shared.
You ain't Canadian if you ain't a nice guy. That's what it means. Eventually everyone realizes it's the way to be - Canadian, eh.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Another Wachowski Write Outta-the-Park - Best Matrix Ever
Sure, we were likely all seasoned Matrix fans catching the first local IMAX release at noon, but we all chuckled, then laughed at how our favourites on the screen warmed our hearts, then became stunned by the unimaginable effects as Mr. Anderson and Trinity save the day, yet again.
I've watched various Matrix movies at least thirty or forty times, but this one, this one put them all together, moving beyond metaphor, taking everyone in the audience to the land of the red pill, the real reality we all share on this planet.
Yes, far more than a shoot-em-up or kung fu flick - this was for the head, and the heart, and the soul. Thank you - somehow I held back the tears of happiness at seeing such a perfect Matrix - start to finish, fascinated - trying not to lose it in public. Thank you all for making this perfect movie; it's a timely profound piece of history.
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011)
So Beautiful
I kept thinking: "How can they possibly make it more wonderful?"
And yet they would.
This should put an end to war everywhere forever.
Are we still animals?
Undercover Brother (2002)
S O L I D
I cut it on DVD from TV ten years ago, and today stuck at home in the pandemic, I finally started watching it again. I couldn't stop laughing, definitely over thirty LOLs, while wearing a nonstop grin throughout.
Now I'm a honky, but like I told the brothers at a college track meet after-party in Detroit during the sixties' riots: "I'm not white, I'm Canadian." They understood. This movie was so creative, so hip, so necessary, I was completely rivetted, again. My hat's off to everyone who helped create this important film driven by outrageous laughter, filled with truth, giving us all hope for the future.
Hare Krishna! The Mantra, the Movement and the Swami Who Started It All (2017)
Stunning
The movie was a high quality biography of a great great preacher of God. The greatest thing about him was his constant absolute love for God, which was so precious, obvious and infectious that the world was transformed and remains transformed. The movie reveals this in a heartfelt tribute endearing to anyone fortunate enough to taste the reality of God and our natural love for Him. My thanks go out to all who helped create this tribute to the man who stood up and changed the world, who made my world sublime beyond imagination.
I had asked God "I know You wrote a book two thousand years ago, but I wish You would come and tell me Yourself". A month later this saint set sail for the West bringing the Song of God with him. And a few years later as I entered a George Harrison concert one of his faithful offered me that Song of God book, The Bhagavad-Gita As It Is. Only days earlier I had decided to get the Gita. It was as though God Himself came and told me exactly everything I needed to know.
This movie does this great man justice, although I feel no one but God knows how really great he was, how great he really is.
