The Fall Guy (2024)
Wonderfully Entertaining
Gosling and Blunt, ably supported by an army of stunt people, make this an entertaining film a real romp. It's what I remember enjoying about Summer movies in the past-no need for blockbuster superhero rehashes-just enjoyable relatable characters. Blunt and Gosling have the Jimmy Stewart gift of never seeming to be acting when they so clearly are. The goofy plot only makes the movie better. I hope that there is a sequel.
The techniques and staging of the stunts shown are interesting and yet you know that the magicians haven't completely unveiled their tricks. This is a loving and satisfying tribute to stunt people.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
Subtle, deeply wonderful
This is a subtle, moving look at profound human ideas-aging, identity, love, loneliness, time.
It uses wonderfully imagined sci-fi to cover these ideas. The use of 50's/60's tech and clunky
"future" tech is inspired. I will rewatch this miniseries to reflect on its themes. It is not high speed,
instant payoff but reflective; that makes all the difference!
Barkskins (2020)
Surprised
Really good look at a place and time on the historical edge; three empires compete (English, French and Iroquois) for land and power.
Major plot hole from Episode 7 to 8, but well done nonetheless. Curious how they will deal the time span of the novel.
Anon (2018)
Topical, intelligent
In an age of vanishing privacy, this is a fun, but thoughtful, look at the issue of Big Data and how
it might be used to control society. A different spin on "Minority Report" in a way, yet interesting in
it's own right. Seyfried's character says it best at the end "It's not that I have anything to hide. It's
that I have nothing I want you to see."
Babylon Berlin (2017)
Great miniseries!
This was a powerful, authentic feeling miniseries about Berlin just before "nightfall " in 1933.
Very rich in characters, art direction and script, it was a tremendously compelling story.
The ending was fitting and also powerful. Very highly recommended for anyone who
enjoys an excellent historical story was told; much better than a "docudrama."
