The Flash: Infantino Street (2017)
Did We Really See What We Think We Saw?
For me, this was a great episode. The tension has been building for much of this season and the climax was worth the wait. I am not going to give a play-by-play review, but will focus primarily on the ending. By holding the Philosopher's Stone and overcoming the Speed Bazooka, the one glimmer of hope that Iris was going to survive the episode was smote. Then, as Flash bolted toward Savitar and Iris in slow motion, the agony of wondering if Flash somehow might get there in time, or if Caitlin or Vibe might show up, seemed to last forever. The foreboding was amplified by the song's title (Murder Song by Aurora) and tears began to well up as the scene progressed. Then, it was all over, and we realize that neither Flash, Caitlin, Vibe, Joe or anyone else could have stopped Savitar. I couldn't believe that Iris was gone. I wondered if it could be a trick, but know that the loss of a main character is sometimes necessary to move the story forward, and I moved on to a much happier show to wash away the pain of Iris' death.
Then, it happened.
Approximately 15 minutes later, an idea exploded across my brain. Maybe, just maybe, Iris is alive - and I think she is. Why was Savitar able to find Iris? Time Remnant Barry tricked HR, causing him to reveal her location. This caused HR extreme grief and feeling like not only was he not contributing to the team, he was actually a detriment. This is why I think HR decided to make the ultimate contribution by giving his life to save Iris. I think HR used his facial changy-thingy to "become" Iris, and tricked Savitar into thinking he had won.
Now, this theory appeases my softer side, but it doesn't address several things. First, Snart's comment, that Barry was only going to defeat Savitar by staying true to himself. Savitar is not going to go away just because he killed Iris. In his mind, he is now a god, so he is probably going become all the more obnoxiously destructive. So, Barry is still going to have to defeat him at some point. Secondly, the theory that Iris is still alive comes at a great cost. HR, with his drumsticks, his love of coffee, and his finishing of everyone else's sentences is one of my favorite characters on this show. I think Tom Cavanagh has proved to be a great actor with a big range, but this HR has been my favorite version by far, adding the perfect amount of levity. Although I was worried that the trend of changing his character each season was going to continue, it would suck to know that he wasn't coming back, even it if was to save Iris.
