Funny Face (1957)
Audrey, Paris & Givenchy
The film starts with a scene that will remind you of a pastel color version of The Devil Wears Prada, it was beautiful yet a bit too 50s Hollywood set for me. Then Astair finally meets Hepburn's Jo and she sticks out like a sore thumb in soooo many ways; we see her dressed plainly next to about twenty women all dressed in high fashion garments, and yet it's not that, it's the way she sings a little off key and dances a bit out of rhythm. Jo, surrounded by all these fashion people, keeps insisting that for her, beautiful is a tree, not a woman being photographed in a long dress. Hepburn brings the beauty of the tree to this otherwise plastic (though in no way less beautiful) film, she is the beauty of a tree in the middle of a choreographed Hollywood number and ohhh it looks really good. I could go on to praise Astair, but I don't really feel it necessary. The chemistry between them left a lot to be desired, and I must admit for a moment I imagined a remake with Astair's character as female and I almost didn't want to go on without it (sue me). Overall a beautiful picture, though at times a bit too shallow. Also Givenchy's work (h o l y s h i t!!!!).
