Rebel Moon - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood (2023)
Fun romp for holiday season 2023
This is an old school buddy film of a rag tag group of people on the periphery of a changing world. Sofia is a great lead and is so authentic in her role, which goes the same for the rest of the cast. Yes, it is formulaic, but don't overthink it, enjoy the ride.
I love sci-fi, this feels like Star Wars, Serenity, Star Trek. The casting is bang on, with just perfect mood setting with the actors and really settling into their roles. Then there is the surprise role of a robot, it is so tender and human, just not expected.
I will definitely watch this again during the holidays again, just escape and appreciate the whole package for what it is. I am definitely looking forward to the next release.
Faraway (2023)
No A listers, which is a good thing.
We watched Your Place or Mine and it was awful. Being on holidays, we just wanted a happy, well done Romcom and the Kushner, Witherspoon effort just goes to show you that once you make it to the A list you have a lot of space to truly make some horrible movies. Desperate for something with substance, heart, and genuine entertainment value, we watched this.
We didn't know any of the actors, but within minutes they were believable and endearing. The female lead is wonderful and very funny. The spanx scene is hilarious and the love interest is wonderful. This will appeal to so many and for those people 40++ it will really find a place in your heart. Just watch and enjoy.
Altered Carbon (2018)
Thank god, I thought it was just me!
First one was a little disjointed, but it all came together because Joel carried it. This one is disjointed and the lead just isn't strong enough as a lead actor. Going to give it a little more time, but it really is a poor second effort so far.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Baby Yoda, help!!!
Wow... from lousy writing, poor director, awful acting, this was a terrible movie experience. The entire movie I tried to find a comfortable position in the reclining seat in order to nap.
The only saving grace is the fact that Adam Driver can act. The others, they should give up the craft. For me, they should have stopped after the original three Star Wars, with the only ones deserving praise being Rogue One and Solo, with the core elements being good acting, writing and directing.
People will argue this, but all three elements need to be there. There is no heart in the latest and others. Forced humour, random development and characters, story lines with no purpose...
The Mandalorian reaffirms once again the three variables need to be in play, and Favreau makes it believable and relatable with a guy wearing a helmet and a non-human creature who displays more emotion and vitality then any character in the latest minus Adam Driver.
The one positive is that this franchise is hopefully over, with hopefully money and energy being put into efforts led by directors like Favreau and actors like Pedro. Time for a mass evaporation of this franchise.
Sorry, was hoping for so much better, unbelievable that my rock bottom expectations going in we're not enough to absorb this mess.
