The Call Up (2016)
Really enjoyed "The Call Up"!
Am glad I watched this movie before reading reviews from this site!
As someone who is not usually much for action movies, but am a gamer and love technology, this movie was very intriguing and enjoyable.
While there may very well have been weaknesses in the film, by allowing myself to feel a part of the experience and engage what was presented, I found the movie to be very good.
I went in with no particular expectations, and walked away sufficiently happy with my viewing, even to the point of encouraging another friend to watch it as well.
Yes, the movie is a bit weak in the acting/story at times, and somewhat predictable. But, if you can watch it for what it is, and enjoy the unique aspects of the movie and set aside the points I mention above, you can also have a positive viewing of this movie.
The Virtual Reality aspect of this movie was what drew me to it, and the presentation of the VR was excellent to me. It looked cool and was believable.
Still find it hard to see why some people are rating this movie so harshly. Was it an Emmy winner? Um, no. Was it a nice sci-fi action flick with a VR twist worth watching? For me, absolutely!
The Makeover (2013)
Very enjoyable movie.
With a tendency to be quite picky about the movies I like, I watched "The Makeover" with some hesitation, not knowing what to expect.
The movie was well made, with good actors. It never felt like a cheaply made or poorly acted movie. If I were to pick any character that I least liked (not necessarily for their acting, but possibly including that), it would have to be the 'mother'.
The story moved along well, without feeling like it was dragging or moving too fast, either. Well balanced.
Movies that are too sappy, or over-the-top romantic, are not to my liking, and was glad that this one was easy on that front.
The only complaint, if I was going to point something out that took away from the movie for me, it would be the one bad time incongruity that I believe occurs in the movie. After '5 weeks' for the office staff not to know about any changes with one of the main characters was lacking in realism. People talk, and they simply would have already known. Period. Without this flaw, I would have given this movie a solid 9/10, but with it, only 8/10.
Los cronocrímenes (2007)
Disappointing
The time travel concept of "Timecrimes" is a difficult one to attempt in a realistic and connected way, and in my view, did not succeed sufficiently at the attempt. While the basic ideas attempted in this film are interesting, I ultimately would prefer to have my 93 minutes back and have skipped it for something else. For those looking for a family friendly movie, this is probably NOT it, as it contains nudity, violence, blood, etc. Acting wasn't horrible, but it just wasn't great, either. Always felt a little ho-hum in that department. In the larger scheme of things, it was a decent attempt at something that could have been rather cool, but ultimately failed to pull me in.
