Black Mirror: White Christmas (2014)
One major flaw
I felt sorry for Joe. He was done in by the bitch girlfriend who never really liked him apparently, and the friend. Why did she not like him? Because she is the one who should be begging for forgiveness, not him. Plus, why not include the guy you supposedly love in your daughter's life or even attempt to do so. And her father was an ass too.
The other two stories were interesting and kind of short impacting, so I will stay on the last one, because I see one major flaw in the story.
The "blocked" people can pick up physical objects as he did with the vase. What prevents him from getting posters and writing on them and showing her what he wrote. Why couldn't he grab a paper, write something down and show her. We know he can write, we saw him write notes. So why didn't he do this, or make some grand gesture with posters and billboards. Hell, even radio stations could have carried his message.
That's the one major flaw in the story and it sinks it a bit.
Columbo: No Time to Die (1992)
We have found the worst Columbo.
The only Columbo that I skipped through parts to finish.
The problem was all those intersperses, especially with the victim trying to break out of the room, because we all knew that she would not completely escape. Just wasted my time. This is more an SVU case rather than Columbo.
The acting is okay but there was just not enough in the plot and style to save this mess.
The ending was also abrupt. Columbo just entered the room and the movie was over. No big discovery, no gotcha. Just entering a room with a bit of relief and the movie is over.
Columbo: Death Hits the Jackpot (1991)
dn2002 Plot problems
Dn2002 appeared to have some questions regarding the wife's role in this case.
I think the implication is that the wife and uncle were already together, having an affair before the lottery win and when the uncle found out about the lottery win, a plan involving her crept into his head involving her.
My guess for the second point is that once she found out about it, if she didn't tell, she would become an accessory to the crime, if she didn't report it immediately, before the murder. She would go to jail and probably lose the money.
The interesting thing about this story is that everything is driven by greed. The victim would have still ended up with 15 million dollars or so which is a lot of money, but he wanted the lot. And that ultimately sealed his fate.
Columbo: Rest in Peace, Mrs. Columbo (1990)
This how you tweak the formula properly
I commented under Columbo Cries Wolf that I didn't like the way they made Columbo look like a fool for the most part, yet I understood why they tried to tweak the formula Here they tweak the formula properly by making it personal for Columbo. I wish they did that more often, maybe by killing a friend of Columbo, or something.
Is it predictable? Yeah, but almost every Columbo is predictable. He's going to catch his crook and we want to see how he does it. I think by the middle, people could figure out it was a fake funeral. Really killing off Mrs Columbo would completely change the character. They were never going to do it.
Peter Falk won the Emmy that year for Best Actor in a Drama Series which was amazing to me because everybody knew the deal with Columbo so there was nothing groundbreaking about it. But even though he won it for the previous episode with Patrick McGoohan, I think he won it for this. A new spin to the classic character
Columbo: Columbo Cries Wolf (1990)
Great idea but.....
I hate when Columbo is made to look like a fool, when a killer outsmarts Columbo because that goes against the whole grain of the program. Columbo is the wolf in sheep's clothing. Now this did happen in the 70s a couple of times when Columbo was wrong, but it wasn't as big as this to the story. You felt at some point that Columbo was in danger of losing his job, which is bad. It injects drama, but it takes away from the show's format. To me, the show is like comfort food that shouldn't be messed with. You can tinker with it, but don't make the majority of the show about it.
That being said, it is an ingenious plot to commit a crime and Columbo shines again at the end. I didn't think the acting was that bad, just meh.
