An American in Paris (1951)
She's way too young for him
I know things were probably different back then and we shouldn't use our current mores to judge the past. However, I just can't get past how Lise looks like a schoolgirl and when Jerry pursues her it just seems creepy. And he seems like a real jerk when he tells Milo, who is an attractive woman who cares for him, that he loves her and wants to take her out.
All that said, the dancing, especially the final dream scene, is incredible. It could be its own movie. Any time the movie comes on, I will just fast forward to the final twenty minutes to watch that sequence. If nothing else, be wowed by the final dance sequence as I've never seen anything like it.
The Regime (2024)
Wow. And not in a good way
I don't know what to say about The Regime because I don't know what I just watched. I like just about everything with Kate Winslet. I truly believe she will go down as one of the great actresses of our time. I loved her performance in Mare of Easttown.
I wasn't sure what the show would be like from the previews. I thought it might be a drama, maybe a dramedy. And since it starred Kate Winslet, I thought I'd give it a try.
Kate chews the scenery and draws your attention. After watching, I guess they are going for satire. However, whatever humor is in the show is too dry even for my normally dry sense of humor. I suppose we are supposed to find some of the absurd situations humorous. I'm not sure what the plot is leading to, or what the point of the show is. Is it a satirical character study? A commentary on Covid paranoia? Then the previews for the remainder of the season makes it look like a drama.
True Detective: Night Country: Part 4 (2024)
Nothing has happened since premier
The season premier had a decent set up. The abandoned lab and the Alaskan darkness made a really creepy setting. I was willing to see if they could wrap up the mystery. I also loved Jodie Foster's performance.
However, I feel like almost nothing to advance the mystery has happened since the premier. There has been a couple small reveals or clues in the last three episodes. The show has been 90-95 percent family drama lately.
There are only two more episodes left, so I'm sort of pot committed. I just wish they'd spend more than a few minutes an episode to the mystery. I'm really tired of all the drama with sisters, daughters, fathers, ex-lovers, etcetera.
Red Dragon (2002)
Very Underrated
It was both very easy to surpass Hannibal, and nearly impossible to match Silence of the Lambs. Therefore, I think Red Dragon gets lost in the ether somewhere.
Without giving spoilers, the opening sequence is among the most gripping scenes in movies and matches the tensest moments of Silence of the Lambs even if we know how things turn out in the king run (after all it is a prequel).
The best way to watch this movie is to take it on its own merits. Don't avoid it, or hold Hannibal's flaws against it. Don't go in expecting it to match Silence of the Lambs. If you go in with an open mind Red Dragon is a tense, well-acted thriller.
Justified: City Primeval: The Question (2023)
Closing Scenes Should've Been the Beginning
My biggest problem with the series was the main villain. They tried to make Mansell a combination of Heath Ledger's Joker and John Wick. But he never seemed like a supervillain. I kept wondering, how does this idiot keep getting out of every situation and how does he just kill whoever he wants no matter how powerful they are? As other have noted, the way he took out all the Albanians completely stretched believability.
The closing scenes with. Winona and Boyd were excellent. Instead of moving the show to Detroit, they should've started with Raylan in retirement reunited with Winona and his daughter. Then Boyd's escape could kick off the new series. Of course, they could be planning that for a second reboot. If so, I think it'll be much better than City Primeval.
